Description: A stage and measuring microscope servocontrolled by a computer have been constructed. The travel of the stage is 0.5 x 0.5 m and the travel of the microscope objective is 7.5 cm. The measuring accuracy is 1 micron in the x-y plane and 5 microns along the z axis. The mechanical and optical construction of the stage and microscope, as well as the way in which the control electronics are organized, permit great flexibility of operation. Possible applications include the scanning and measuring of astronomical plates, the laying out of patterns of semiconductor devices of very large sizes, and the measurement of precision grids.

Description: The development of a multispectral scanner data analysis console is reported that incorporates a wideband tape unit, a teletypewriter, a digital computer, and color display as well as numeric display terminals. The device is able to digitize infrared scanner images and displays color differences according to signal differences between analog channels.

Description: Comparison of crystal oscillators to the rubidium stabilized color burst is made easy and inexpensive by use of the color bar phase meter. Required equipment consists of an unmodified color TV receiver, a color bar synthesizer and a stop watch (a wrist watch or clock with sweep second hand may be used with reduced precision). Measurement precision of 1 x 10 to the minus 10th power can be realized in measurement times of less than two minutes. If the color bar synthesizer were commercially available, user cost should be less than $200.00, exclusive of the TV receiver. Parts cost for the color bar synthesizer which translates the crystal oscillator frequency to 3.579MHz and modulates the received RF signal before it is fed to the receiver antenna terminals is about $25.00. A more sophisticated automated version, with precision of 1 x 10 to the minus 11th power would cost about twice as much.

Description: The feasibility of generating artificial auroras by injecting electrons into the upper atmosphere was investigated by using an electron accelerator aboard an Aerobee 350 rocket. Four of the artificial auroral rays were detected and recorded by two geophysical sites separated enough to enable the spatial coordinates of the rays to be determined by triangulation. It was found that (1) the beam remained well collimated; (2) most of the initial beam energy was deposited in the atmosphere; (3) plasma instabilities did not play a significant role; and (4) the orientations of the rays were determined with sufficient accuracy to improve the knowledge of the earth's magnetic field over the Virginia coast. The publications resulting from this research are listed.

Description: A hydraulic actuator designed for a thrust vector control system used as a shaker for a vehicle to determine the bending mode frequencies is described. The actuator is used as the prime mover and the frequency sensor for the flexible vehicle in a test tower. Advantages in using the actuator piston position with respect to a commanded position to obtain the bending mode frequencies are shown.

Description: Application of data from the Celescope Catalog of Ultraviolet Observations to various problems of stellar and interstellar astrophysics. These include refinements in the incorporation of line blanketing in theoretical stellar-atmosphere models, variations in the law of interstellar extinction from one region of the sky to another, and selection and identification of various types of peculiar stars for further investigation. In addition, the data were analyzed to determine the photometric and astrometric accuracy of the Celescope equipment.

Description: Two types of sensor designs were investigated: (1)a polysulfone dielectric film with vapor-deposited aluminum and gold sensor plates, bonded to a relatively thick aluminum substrate, and (2) an aluminum oxide (A1203) dielectric layer prepared on an aluminum substrate by anodization, with a layer of vapor-deposited aluminum providing one sensor plate and the substrate serving as the other plate. In the first design, specimens were prepared which indicate the state of the art for application of this type of sensor for elements of a meteoroid detection system having an area as large as 10 sq M. Techniques were investigated for casting large-area polysulfone films on the surface of water and for transferring the films from the water. Methods of preparing sensors by layering of films, the deposition of capacitor plates, and sensor film-to-substrate bonding, as well as techniques for making electrical connections to the capacitor plates, were studied.
