    Description: A stage and measuring microscope servocontrolled by a computer have been constructed. The travel of the stage is 0.5 x 0.5 m and the travel of the microscope objective is 7.5 cm. The measuring accuracy is 1 micron in the x-y plane and 5 microns along the z axis. The mechanical and optical construction of the stage and microscope, as well as the way in which the control electronics are organized, permit great flexibility of operation. Possible applications include the scanning and measuring of astronomical plates, the laying out of patterns of semiconductor devices of very large sizes, and the measurement of precision grids.

    Description: Limb radiance profiles for Venus in the 600 to 700 per cm spectral band are derived for two sets of model atmospheres. The radiance computations make use of a strong line transmission model. Both an extreme variability atmospheric model set and a normal variability set are derived and discussed, as are the effects of clouds and surface pressure uncertainties. A horizon locator concept based on the derived radiance profiles is presented, through its implementation in a conceptual systems design. The locator concept developed shows promise of locating the Venus limb to better than 2 km accuracy at the horizon, or 0.05 deg for a 500-km orbit.

    Description: Data obtained from approximately 7500 ultraviolet television pictures are used to compile a celescope catalog of ultraviolet observations. This catalog lists the magnitude as observed in each of celescope's four ultraviolet color bands, the standard deviations of the observed ultraviolet magnitudes, positions, identifications, and ground based magnitudes, colors, and spectral types for approximately 5000 stars.

    Description: The development of a multispectral scanner data analysis console is reported that incorporates a wideband tape unit, a teletypewriter, a digital computer, and color display as well as numeric display terminals.     Description: Comparison of crystal oscillators to the rubidium stabilized color burst is made easy and inexpensive by use of the color bar phase meter. Required equipment consists of an unmodified color TV receiver, a color bar synthesizer and a stop watch (a wrist watch or clock with sweep second hand may be used with reduced precision). Measurement precision of 1 x 10 to the minus 10th power can be realized in measurement times of less than two minutes. If the color bar synthesizer were commercially available, user cost should be less than $200.00, exclusive of the TV receiver. Parts cost for the color bar synthesizer which translates the crystal oscillator frequency to 3.579MHz and modulates the received RF signal before it is fed to the receiver antenna terminals is about $25.00. A more sophisticated automated version, with precision of 1 x 10 to the minus 11th power would cost about twice as much.

    Description: Examples taken from the S-054 X-ray telescope observations made during the first Skylab mission show the hot coronal plasma tracing the configuration of the magnetic fields. The high spectral resolution and sensitivity of the instrument has enabled the following two facts to be more firmly established: (1) that the 'quiet homogeneous corona' is in fact highly structured and that the structures observed appear to be the results of dispersed active region magnetic fields; and (2) that numerous bright points are distributed randomly on the disk. Their presence at high latitudes may play a role in solar cycle models. In addition, the capability of Skylab for studying time evolution has enabled the restructuring of coronal features to be seen at times of high activity, indicating a restructuring of the coronal magnetic fields.

    Description: The feasibility of generating artificial auroras by injecting electrons into the upper atmosphere was investigated by using an electron accelerator aboard an Aerobee 350 rocket. Four of the artificial auroral rays were detected and recorded by two geophysical sites separated enough to enable the spatial coordinates of the rays to be determined by triangulation. It was found that (1) the beam remained well collimated; (2) most of the initial beam energy was deposited in the atmosphere; (3) plasma instabilities did not play a significant role; and (4) the orientations of the rays were determined with sufficient accuracy to improve the knowledge of the earth's magnetic field over the Virginia coast. The publications resulting from this research are listed.

    Description: New measurements of the sun, moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn at 3.1- and 8.6-mm wavelengths are given. The temperatures reported for the planets at 3.1-mm wavelength are higher than previous measurements in this wavelength range and change the interpretation of some planetary spectra. For Mercury, it is found that the mean brightness temperature is independent of wavelength and that a temperature-dependent thermal conductivity is not required to match the observations. In the case of Mars, the spectrum is shown to rise in the millimeter region, as simple models predict. For Jupiter, the need to recalculate the spectrum with recent models is demonstrated. The flux density scale proposed by Dent (1972) has been revised according to a more accurate determination of the millimeter brightness temperature of Jupiter.
