    Description: 〈p〉Spin-triplet superconductors potentially host topological excitations that are of interest for quantum information processing. We report the discovery of spin-triplet superconductivity in UTe〈sub〉2〈/sub〉, featuring a transition temperature of 1.6 kelvin and a very large and anisotropic upper critical field exceeding 40 teslas. This superconducting phase stability suggests that UTe〈sub〉2〈/sub〉 is related to ferromagnetic superconductors such as UGe〈sub〉2〈/sub〉, URhGe, and UCoGe. However, the lack of magnetic order and the observation of quantum critical scaling place UTe〈sub〉2〈/sub〉 at the paramagnetic end of this ferromagnetic superconductor series. A large intrinsic zero-temperature reservoir of ungapped fermions indicates a highly unconventional type of superconducting pairing.〈/p〉

    Description: 〈p〉Cuprates exhibit antiferromagnetic, charge density wave (CDW), and high-temperature superconducting ground states that can be tuned by means of doping and external magnetic fields. However, disorder generated by these tuning methods complicates the interpretation of such experiments. Here, we report a high-resolution inelastic x-ray scattering study of the high-temperature superconductor YBa〈sub〉2〈/sub〉Cu〈sub〉3〈/sub〉O〈sub〉6.67〈/sub〉 under uniaxial stress, and we show that a three-dimensional long-range-ordered CDW state can be induced through pressure along the 〈i〉a〈/i〉 axis, in the absence of magnetic fields. A pronounced softening of an optical phonon mode is associated with the CDW transition. The amplitude of the CDW is suppressed below the superconducting transition temperature, indicating competition with superconductivity. The results provide insights into the normal-state properties of cuprates and illustrate the potential of uniaxial-pressure control of competing orders in quantum materials.〈/p〉

    Description: Mobile healthcare (m-Healthcare) is a burgeoning electronic healthcare segment, and is designed to improve the quality and safety of healthcare by combining advanced mobile communication technologies with eHealth systems. The objective of m-Healthcare is to provide ubiquitous healthcare services; however, its application in the life-critical vehicular environment has thus far received limited attention. In this paper, we propose mvSERS , a secure emergency response solution for vehicular environments. Based on existing advanced technologies, mvSERS facilitates secure real-time monitoring and rapid emergency responses. In particular, mvSERS utilizes dual emergency response centers to effectively process different levels of emergencies. We conduct a comprehensive security analysis to demonstrate that mvSERS meets fundamental security requirements, such as data confidentiality, authenticity and integrity; we also verify that it resists replay attacks, man-in-the-middle attacks, identity theft and forgery attacks. Simulated experiments are also performed to demonstrate that mvSERS achieves good performance in terms of reducing storage costs, computational complexity and communication overhead.

    Description: : Peptide identification is an important problem in proteomics. One of the most popular scoring schemes for peptide identification is X Corr (cross-correlation). Since calculating X Corr is computationally intensive, a lot of efforts have been made to develop fast X Corr engines. However, the existing X Corr engines are not suitable for high-resolution MS/MS spectrometry because they are either slow or require a specific type of CPU. We present a portable high-speed X Corr engine for high-resolution tandem mass spectrometry by developing a novel algorithm for calculating X Corr . The algorithm enables X Corr calculation 1.25–49 times faster than previous algorithms for 0.01 Da fragment tolerance. Furthermore, our engine is easily portable to any machine with different types of CPU because it is developed in C language. Hence, our X Corr engine will expedite peptide identification by high-resolution tandem mass spectrometry.     Description: 〈p〉Although guest-filled carbon nanotube yarns provide record performance as torsional and tensile artificial muscles, they are expensive, and only part of the muscle effectively contributes to actuation. We describe a muscle type that provides higher performance, in which the guest that drives actuation is a sheath on a twisted or coiled core that can be an inexpensive yarn. This change from guest-filled to sheath-run artificial muscles increases the maximum work capacity by factors of 1.70 to 2.15 for tensile muscles driven electrothermally or by vapor absorption. A sheath-run electrochemical muscle generates 1.98 watts per gram of average contractile power—40 times that for human muscle and 9.0 times that of the highest power alternative electrochemical muscle. Theory predicts the observed performance advantages of sheath-run muscles.〈/p〉

    Description: 〈p〉We report DNA- and RNA-like systems built from eight nucleotide "letters" (hence the name "hachimoji") that form four orthogonal pairs. These synthetic systems meet the structural requirements needed to support Darwinian evolution, including a polyelectrolyte backbone, predictable thermodynamic stability, and stereoregular building blocks that fit a Schrödinger aperiodic crystal. Measured thermodynamic parameters predict the stability of hachimoji duplexes, allowing hachimoji DNA to increase the information density of natural terran DNA. Three crystal structures show that the synthetic building blocks do not perturb the aperiodic crystal seen in the DNA double helix. Hachimoji DNA was then transcribed to give hachimoji RNA in the form of a functioning fluorescent hachimoji aptamer. These results expand the scope of molecular structures that might support life, including life throughout the cosmos.〈/p〉

    Description: Temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) is characterized by debilitating, recurring seizures and an increased risk for cognitive deficits. Mossy cells (MCs) are key neurons in the hippocampal excitatory circuit, and the partial loss of MCs is a major hallmark of TLE. We investigated how MCs contribute to spontaneous ictal activity and to spatial contextual memory in a mouse model of TLE with hippocampal sclerosis, using a combination of optogenetic, electrophysiological, and behavioral approaches. In chronically epileptic mice, real-time optogenetic modulation of MCs during spontaneous hippocampal seizures controlled the progression of activity from an electrographic to convulsive seizure. Decreased MC activity is sufficient to impede encoding of spatial context, recapitulating observed cognitive deficits in chronically epileptic mice.

    Description: Schooling rewards people with labor market returns and nonpecuniary benefits in other realms of life. However, there is no experimental evidence showing that education interventions improve individual economic rationality. We examine this hypothesis by studying a randomized 1-year financial support program for education in Malawi that reduced absence and dropout rates and increased scores on a qualification exam of female secondary school students. We measure economic rationality 4 years after the intervention by using lab-in-the-field experiments to create scores of consistency with utility maximization that are derived from revealed preference theory. We find that students assigned to the intervention had higher scores of rationality. The results remain robust after controlling for changes in cognitive and noncognitive skills. Our results suggest that education enhances the quality of economic decision-making.

    Description: Motivation: Novel approaches are needed for discovery of targeted therapies for non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) that are specific to certain patients. Whole genome RNAi screening of lung cancer cell lines provides an ideal source for determining candidate drug targets. Results: Unsupervised learning algorithms uncovered patterns of differential vulnerability across lung cancer cell lines to loss of functionally related genes. Such genetic vulnerabilities represent candidate targets for therapy and are found to be involved in splicing, translation and protein folding. In particular, many NSCLC cell lines were especially sensitive to the loss of components of the LSm2-8 protein complex or the CCT/TRiC chaperonin. Different vulnerabilities were also found for different cell line subgroups. Furthermore, the predicted vulnerability of a single adenocarcinoma cell line to loss of the Wnt pathway was experimentally validated with screening of small-molecule Wnt inhibitors against an extensive cell line panel.
