Description: Purpose Food-based dietary guidelines are proposed to not only improve diet quality, but to also reduce the environmental impact of diets. The aim of our study was to investigate whether food-related behavioral activation therapy (F-BA) applying Mediterranean-style dietary guidelines altered food intake and the environmental impact of the diet in overweight adults with subsyndromal symptoms of depression. Methods In total 744 adults who either received the F-BA intervention (F-BA group) or no intervention (control group) for 12 months were included in this analysis. Food intake data were collected through a food frequency questionnaire at baseline and after 6 and 12 months. Greenhouse gas emissions (GHGE), land use (LU), and fossil energy use (FEU) estimates from life-cycle assessments and a weighted score of the three (pReCiPe score) were used to estimate the environmental impact of each individual diet at each timepoint. Results The F-BA group reported increased intakes of vegetables (19.7 g/day; 95% CI 7.8–31.6), fruit (23.0 g/day; 9.4–36.6), fish (7.6 g/day; 4.6–10.6), pulses/legumes (4.0 g/day; 1.6–6.5) and whole grains (12.7 g/day; 8.0–17.5), and decreased intake of sweets/extras (− 6.8 g/day; − 10.9 to − 2.8) relative to control group. This effect on food intake resulted in no change in GHGE, LU, and pReCiPe score, but a relative increase in FEU by 1.6 MJ/day (0.8, 2.4). Conclusions A shift towards a healthier Mediterranean-style diet does not necessarily result in a diet with reduced environmental impact in a real-life setting. Trial registration ClinicalTrials.gov. Number of identification: NCT02529423. August 2015.

Description: An externally heated, hollow cathode arc source was recommissioned at UCLA for use in experiments to drive plasma wakefields with shaped beams at the Argonne Wakefield Accelerator. The hollow cathode arc source provides a robust plasma column with a density in the 10 13 – 10 14 cm − 3 range while external heating of the cathode allows the plasma arc regime to be accessed with applied voltages down to 20 V. Overall source operating principals are described, along with time-resolved plasma current measurements and plasma density characterization with the use of a triple Langumir probe. The results show that relevant plasma densities that match facility beam parameters are readily achievable.

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung 1.
Notes: Summary 1. The food of a goshawk population was studied by means of collecting and identifying remains of their prey. 2. Prey items found included almost any medium-sized bird and mammal species regularly occurring in the study area. However, the bulk of the diet consisted of five species only. 3. There is considerable difference in the diet composition between winter and nesting season as well as among breeding pairs. This is considered to be due to divergence in food supply. 4. As compared with populations studied in other parts of Europe, diet is poorly diverse. Main prey species are man-dependant herbivorous animals. 5. It is concluded that the high density of the goshawk population studied is possible thanks to modern human agriculture and breeding of homing pigeons. 6. Factors are discussed which are thought to be responsible for differences in the vulnerability of some prey species.

Notes: Abstract Conductance measurements are reported for tetraethylammonium halide and perchlorate salts in water-methanol mixtures over the complete composition range at 25° C. Limiting conductances and association constants are evaluated together with the distance parameters. The maxima in the limiting ionic Walden products are considered in some detail. Ionic association is generally weak, and the lack of reliable correlation betweenK A and the solvent dielectric properties supports the assumption of specific ion-solvent interaction.

Notes: Abstract In a recent series of papers, Sandage and Tammann reach the conclusion according to which the Hubble constant is everywhere the same. This result arises from the analysis of two samples (a nearby one and a remote one) of Sc-type galaxies, each sample separately giving the same 〈H 0〉 mean value. We attempt to check whether or not the whole data from both the samples together are consistent with theH 0=constant hypothesis at a suitable level of statistical significance.

Notes: Summary Research consists of choosing a problem, proposing and testing problem solutions, and presenting the results. In its central moment — “conjectures and testing” — science must be autonomous in order to be successful. Securing this autonomy by organizational means is one of the tasks of research policy. Research needs to justify itself only when the researcher makes a claim to the resources of others. To discuss problems of justification of governmental support, it is imperative to distinguish between basic and applied research. In basic research the problem choice is guided only by considerations of “scientific interest”, while in applied research the problems emanate from extra-scientific concerns since applied research is by definition a means for tackling concrete practical problems. Deciding on “external” criteria (e.g. deciding whether to support more energy research or more cancer research) is a genuine political problem rather than a problem of research policy. Thus applied research can be justified by referring to the benefit the expected results will yield, but basic research requires a completely different justification. One such justification is the argument that applied research requires a certain “overhead” in basic research. Securing an adequate balance between funding basic and applied research within the problem area concerned is another task of research policy. (E.g. in the area of cancer whether to support more molecular biology research or more clinical research.) When the “overhead” argument is not applicable, there still remain several possible justifications for basic research. These are examined in the paper. When setting priorities for basic research within a certain discipline, one apparently must turn to the scientific community itself. It may well be that the researches, who constitute the only expertise available for this task, have to rely on “tacit knowledge”. If so, this remains afaute de mieux procedure since articulated criteria would be preferable to intuitive procedures. The purpose of methodological reflection on research policy making is to supply intellectual instruments for making the discussion about substantive problems more rational. The substantive problems can be tackled only through the close cooperation of research policy makers and researchers. Thus methodology should not limit the degrees of freedom of either but increase them.
