Notes: Summary Measurements are described of fusicoccin (FC)-stimulated H+ efflux in barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) roots when K+ and Na+ concentrations were varied. In low-salt roots H+ efflux was stimulated in both 5 mM KCl and NaCl. In salt-saturated roots H+ efflux was stimulated more effectively in KCl than in NaCl solution. The stimulation of H+ efflux thus is parallel with the selectivity of these different root preparations for K+ and Na+ and with estimates of permeability ratios (P Na/P K) determined from electrical measurements. It is suggested that the results support electrogenic coupling between FC-stimulated H+ efflux and cation uptake.

Notes: Summary Cycloheximide was shown to inhibit the transport of ions into the xylem of “salt-saturated” barley roots (Hordeum vulgare cv cape), and incorporation of L-[1-14C] leucine into protein within 40–60 min. Water flow across the roots of whole seedlings was not altered for at least 180 min. Uptake of ions into the cells of “salt-saturated” roots was not affected for 120 min, but was inhibited when treated with cycloheximide for more than 120 min. H+ efflux from “lowsalt” roots was inhibited by cycloheximide at about the same time as ion uptake. Measurement of ATP levels and O2uptake indicated that cycloheximide was not acting as an uncoupler of oxidative phosphorylation. The present data are considered to support the view that secretion of ions into the xylem vessels involves a specific protein with a short effective half-life, and is a separate process from active uptake into the cortical cells.

Notes: Abstract Notched impact fracture experiments have been conducted on specimens of polycarbonate in three different conditions, (a) as received, (b) annealed at 125° C, and (c) electron beam irradiated to reduce the molecular weight. By consideration of the behaviour of a wide range of notch geometries four different failure modes were identified which were present in different proportions for each material. (1) Razor notched specimens failed in a completely brittle manner, well described by linear elastic fracture mechanics. (2) Small notch tip radii specimens failed in an apparently brittle manner through the formation of a single craze. (3) Some intermediate notch tip radii specimens failed in a predominantly brittle manner with small shear lips indicative of plane stress yielding. A fracture mechanics approach was used here, the measured toughness correlating with the extent of plane stress yielding. (4) Fully ductile failure was observed for large notch tip radii for all materials. It has been established that the embrittlement of polycarbonate caused by annealing is due to an increase in the yield stress, whereas that caused by reducing the molecular weight is due to a reduction of the crazing stress. In both cases, more specimens of intermediate notch tip radius are caused to fail in the low energy brittle mode designated (2) above. By varying the yield stress and crazing stress independently we have thus been able to distinguish clearly how both influence the brittle-ductile transition.

Notes: Abstract The influence of hydrogen in a “static” and “flowing” nitriding gas on the mechanism of formation, composition, structure and mechanical properties of reaction-sintered silicon nitride has been investigated. Using previously developed structural and compositional models describing the progressive formation of silicon nitride, it is suggested that hydrogen enables a high partial pressure of silicon monoxide to be maintained at the early stages of nitridation, thus promoting the rapid development of a continuous skeletal network of silicon nitride with resultant high strength. The mechanisms of formation, composition, structure and mechanical properties of silicon nitride formed from one type of silicon compact under a variety of nitriding conditions are compared, and the significance of the nitriding atmosphere in determining properties is demonstrated.

Notes: Abstract The development of strength in reaction sintered silicon nitride has been investigated by determining the elastic moduli, fracture mechanics parameters, strengths and critical defect sizes of silicon compacts reacted to various degrees of conversion using “static” or “flowing” nitrogen. The relationship between each property and the nitrided density is shown to be independent of the green silicon compact density but is influenced by the nitriding conditions employed. Young's moduli, rigidity moduli and strengths vary linearly with the nitrided density. After an initial period when increases may occur, the critical defect sizes in both “static” and “flow” materials decrease continuously with increasing nitrided density, although at any particular density they are larger in material produced under “flow” conditions. A model is suggested for the development of the structure of reaction sintered silicon nitride involving the development of a continuous silicon nitride network within the pore space of the original silicon compact. The experimental data are discussed in terms of the proportion of silicon nitride which contributes effectively to the continuous network.

Description: Suicide is the leading cause of death among young men aged 15–29 in Greenland, but few epidemiological studies have described this problem. We aimed to summarise descriptive epidemiological studies of suicide in young men in Greenland compared with other demographic groups in Denmark and Greenland to inform future suicide prevention strategy. We searched PubMed, PsycINFO, and Embase using an agreed search strategy to identify English-language papers describing suicide epidemiology in Greenlandic men aged 15–29. We followed PRISMA guidelines in screening and appraising eligible publications. Eight articles fulfilled inclusion criteria of 64 meeting search criteria. Findings covering 1970–2011 supported a dramatic rise in suicide rates in Greenlandic men aged 15–24 from 1976, who remained the highest-ranking demographic group over 1976–2011 compared with men and women of all age groups in Denmark and Greenland. Highest rates recorded were almost 600 per 100,000 per year in men aged approximately 20–23 over 1977–1986. No studies described suicide epidemiology after 2011, and no studies described risk factors for suicide in young men. Given the very high suicide rates recorded for young men over 1976–2011, such studies will be essential for informing the development and evaluation of appropriate preventive interventions.
