Notes: The preferential orientations of the purine bases in dinucleoside monophosphates such as ApA, ApG, and GpA in 10-2M neutral aqueous solutions have been investigated by proton relaxation at 250 MHz. These orientations are deduced from computer simulations of the magnetization recovery curves following a 180° nonselective pulse. The distances between the H(8) proton of a base and the ribose ring protons which are used in these calculations are obtained by minimization as a function of the glycosyl torsion angle ϒ of the standard deviation between the isotropic reorientation correlation times τR derived from the relaxation rates of these protons. The average H(1′) - H(8) distance obtained by this procedure may be readily verified from the reduction of the H(1′) relaxation rate when H(8) is substituted by a deuteron. The limits of validity of the assumption of a single correlation time τR governing the proton relaxation have been estimated, taking into account several possible internal motions, e.g., the rotation of the base, of the methylene exocyclic group and the N ⇄ S interconversion of the ribose ring. For 10-10 〈 τR 〈 2 × 10-10 sec, it appears that the influence of these motions on the proton relaxation becomes perceptible when the jump rates among equilibrium positions exceed ca. 109 sec-1.The whole of the experimental results show that for the ribose ring N conformer, the orientation of the bases is found in the ranges 60° 〈 ϒ 〈 80° (syn) and 180° 〈 ϒ 〈 210° (anti). For ribose S conformer, it is observed that this orientation is mainly syn with 5° 〈 ϒ 〈 90°. The average H(1′) - H(8) distance provides semiquantitative information on the overall syn or anti orientations of the base in each nucleoside moiety. At 298 K the population of the anti conformer is found to increase in the order A- pG 〈 Ap-G ∼ Gp-A 〈 Ap-A 〈 A-pA 〈 G-pA. A more detailed analysis of relaxation data shows that the maximum possible fraction of the stacked form of dinucleotides, due to the occurrence of N-anti conformers in both nucleoside moieties, is in the order ApG 〈 GpA 〈 ApA, in agreement with previous works, with however smaller values.Lastly the deuteron linewidth in position 8 of the bases indicates a syn-anti transition rate of the order of 109 sec-1 at room temperature, without noticeable effects therefore on the proton relaxation.

Notes: The β62.4- and β126.6-helical structures do not appear consistent with the structural data and ion-transport properties of (Ala-Ala-Gly) or (Leu-Ser-Leu-Gly) oligomers. Oligoalanine derivatives also give rise to current fluctuations in bilayer lipid membranes. Bundles of molecules may explain the behavior of these various peptides in membranes.

Notes: Several telomers of acrylic acid with carbone tetrachloride were prepared. Their average degree of polymerization, which was between 10 and 50, was determined by several analytical methods (elemental analysis, viscosimetry, and GPC). From the kinetic equations of telomerization a relation between DPn of these telomers and the experimental conditions is established. Fixation of hydroxylic compounds through direct esterification was studied and it was found that the prepared telomers can be used as hydrosoluble carriers for drugs containing primary alcohol or phenol functions.

Notes: Chlorides of carboxylic acids were grafted on telomers of vinyl alcohol. The yields of grafting were improved by increasing the temperature and the concentration of the reactants. In the range investigated, they do not depend on the DPn of the telomers, nor on the stoichiometric rates of the reactants. Therefore, the grafting rates are directly related to the initial conditions of the reaction. Modification of the telomers by treatment with ethylene oxide provides more soluble substances, but it does not affect the behaviour of the telomers in grafting reactions. Grafting of 1-(p-chlorobenzoyl)-5-methoxy-2-methyl-3-indolacetic acid (9) (indomethacin), an antiinflammatory drug, leads to potentially pharmacologically active telomers.

Notes: Systematic studies were performed on interpolymer complex formation between Poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) and poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) in THF-water mixtures of different compositions. Viscosity behaviour during complex formation in mixed solvents was found to be entirely different from that observed by other workers in aqueous and in pure organic solvents. The result are interpreted in terms of, (a) preferential solvation of the polymer, (b) Probable change in conformation of the polyelectrolyte moleculer. (c) association of complex molecules in a medium of low dielectric constant, and (d) expected disordering of bound water molecules around PEO by THF. Irrespective of solvent composition, interpolymer complex of PAA and PEO was always found to have 1:1 unit mole ratio.

Notes: The anionic polymerization of 1,3 and 1,4-diisopropenylbenzene (DIB) was found to be characterized by a rather low ceiling temperature and by rather strong differences in reactivity between the two double bonds. At low degrees of conversion the polymers formed are essentially linear and carry one pendant double bond per monomeric unit. Branching and crosslinking can occur only at higher conversion. 1,3-DIB can be copolymerized anionically with α-methylstyrene. Grafting reactions were carried out on polymer backbones with pendant unsaturated groups, using two different pathways. The occurence of coupling reaction can be avoided by a proper choice of experimental conditions.

Notes: Reactions of insertion of components serving as bridges between a pharmacologically active constituent and a water-soluble telomeric chain, were carried out. Model compounds containing hydroxyl, amine or carboxylic functions were studied. In each case a bifunctional compound could be found, which is capable of reacting with the model. The resulting products could be fixed on a telomer. The results with the model compounds were applied to the fixation of the carboxylic drug indometacin.

Notes: Redox of radical telomerizations of methyl 10-undecenoate (1) with different telogens such as CCl4, CCl3Br, CCl3CF3, HPO (OEt)P2 or different adducts of CCI4, on vinylidene chloride and chlorotrifluoroethylene, were studied. Chemical transformation of the end of the chains led to the corresponding difunctional compounds. Starting with these last compounds, polycondensation reactions were carried out.

Notes: The intrinsic viscosities of some acrylic telomers prepared by redox catalysis were measured with an Ubbelohde capillary viscosimeter. The variation of density during dilution appears to be a very important parameter. Thus, the viscosimetric results become coherent according to Huggins' theory on polymers, and a calibration curve available for the whole range of molecular weights can be established.

Notes: The present paper describes the synthesis of tetrakis [4-(1-phenylvinyl)phenyl]plumbane (1). It was found that “living” mono- or difunctional carbanionic polystyrenes are able to react with compound 1 to form star-shaped polymers or tetrafunctional crosslinked networks, resp., and it could also be shown that this polyfunctional lead compound can be used to prepare starshaped copolymers containing polystyrene and poly(methyl methacrylate) branches.
