    Notes: Summary Keeping in view the prospects of biodegradable polymers, a polymer was synthesized by the condensation of carboxy-terminated polybutadiene (CTPB) of Mn∼-5000 with glycerol and tested for its microbial susceptibility. The results of end group estimations and viscosity measurements indicated a quantitative reaction between the two reactants under experimental conditions. The clear-zone method was employed in this investigation to test biodegradability. Two strains of Serratia and three strains of Staphylococcus did show a clear zone surrounding the colony. However, the microbial growth was found to diminish after 4 or 5 days.

    Notes: Summary The kinetics of oxidation of ethylene glycol, 2,3-butanediol and pinacol have been studied spectrophotometrically under different experimental conditions. The reactions seem to occur through the formation of an intermediate complex between each diol and iridium(IV). The complexes decompose through intermediate free radicals to form formaldehyde, acetaldehyde and acetone, respectively. Thermodynamic parameters have been calculated.

    Notes: Summary Increase in nuclear size in liver has been used as an index of polyploidy. It has long been considered that the occurrence of polyploidy and multinuclearity are characteristics of mammalian liver. The present study shows the occurrence of these phenomena in the liver of birds, so these features are not confined to mammals. 3 classes of nuclear size groups have been identified. The simultaneous occurrence of polyploidy and binuclearity indicates some sort of interrelationship between them.

    Notes: Summary Dimethylsulfoxide is used as a cryoprotectant for the preservation of mammary tissue to be used in primary cell culture. The method involves a two-step process that reduces the sample temperature to −20° C for a short-time, which is followed by storage at −90° C or immersion into liquid nitrogen. Comparison between fresh and frozen-thawed tissue was made by the cells' ability to grow inside collagen gel in response to various hormones and growth factors. Growth of frozen-thawed and collagenase-digested tissue achieved 70 to 90% the DNA values of their nonfrozen counterparts.

    Notes: Abstract Three characteristics have been demonstrated by the chemical analysis of bovine brain coated vesicles following removal of the coat proteins: a high protein content, a high cholesterol/lipid ratio and a high percentage of phosphatidylethanolamine amongst the phospholipids. The study of lipid bilayer organization and dynamics has been performed using the fluorescent probes pyrene and parinaric acid (cis and trans). This has allowed the study of both lateral mobility and rotational motion in the lipid bilayer of the coated and uncoated vesicles. Lateral mobility in the fluid phase of the lipid is slightly reduced by the presence of the clathrin coat, as indicated by the lower diffusion coefficient of pyrene in coated compared with uncoated vesicles. At all temperatures from 6° to 30°C, solid-phase domains, probed by trans parinaric acid, coexist with fluid-phase domains in the lipid bilayer. The temperature dependence of the parinaric acid lifetimes and of their amplitudes strongly suggests that the solid phase domains decrease in size with temperature, both in coated and uncoated vesicles. However, the difference in the value of the anisotropy at long times (r ∞), between coated and uncoated vesicles (a difference which is more pronounced for cis than for trans parinaric acid), indicates that the presence of the clathrin coat introduces disorder in the surrounding lipids, thus suggesting a possible role of the clathrin in the formation of the pits on the plasma membrane.

    Notes: Abstract Six mutant strains of Rhizobium were isolated after UV treatment which could exhibit nitrogenase activity in Burk's N-free medium without any supplement. The activity ranged between 99.5 and 113 nmol/mg cell dry weight and hour. Two of the parent strains belonged to soybean, and one each to mungbean and Sesbania sp. Both the parent and mutant strains exhibited nitrogenase activity in CS 7 medium. One of the mutants retained its capacity to produce nodules on soybean roots.

    Notes: Summary The avidin-biotin-peroxidase complex immunoperoxidase technique was employed to determine the intercellular distribution of thioesterase II in rat mammary glands. This enzyme is responsible for shifting the product specificity of the fatty-acid synthetase enzyme complex from long to medium chain fatty acids. Thioesterase II was found exclusively in the cells lining the lumen of the ductal and alveolar structures in glands from mature virgin (150 days old) and pregnant rats. The ductal cell staining intensity was considerably less than that of the alveolar cells in the mature virgin rat glands. No immunoreactive thioesterase II was found in the stromal, adipose, vascular, or myoepithelial components of the gland in the developmental stages examined. In the glands from immature virgin rats (40–45 days old) thioesterase II was again found only in the epithelial cells lining the lumen of the ductal and end-bud structures although this layer was usually more than one cell thick. Quantitative determination of thioesterase II activity in cytosol preparations revealed similar levels in mammary fragments from enzymatically-dissociated glands obtained from mature virgins and in end buds derived from immature virgins, but somewhat higher levels in mammary structures derived from late-pregnant animals. These immunohistological and biochemical results demonstrate thioesterase II's usefulness as a mammary epithelial cell-specific marker.

    Notes: Summary The utility of spraying some known N2-fixing microorganisms on rice leaves grown both in N-less sand culture and under field conditions was examined. The effect was compared with that of spraying a phyllosphere N2-fixing isolate of Klebsiella, KUPBR2, and application of nitrogenous fertilizers. All the growth parameters studied including dry weight and N-content were enhanced. Under field conditions number of tillers was increased by 26% withKlebsiella pneumoniae M5al and by 65% with Aphanothece. The dry weight of the plants was enhanced by 61–119%. The yield per 10 m2 was almost doubled with Aphanothece, Beijerinckia 8007,Mycobacterium flavum, K. pneumoniae M5al and KUPBR2. The increases observed withStreptomyces sp. G12 though less spectacular was significant at 1% level with respect to several growth parameters.K. pneumoniae M5al,M. flavum andStreptomyces sp. G12 exhibited nitrogenase activity both in laboratory culture and in association with rice plants.
