Notes: Abstract We consider the estimation of the parameters of the three-parameter Weibull distribution, with particular emphasis on the unknown endpoint of the distribution. We summarize recent results on the asymptotic behaviour of maximum likelihood estimators. We continue with an example in which maximum likelihood and Bayesian estimators arc compared. We conclude that there are practical advantages to the Bayesian approach, but the study also suggests ways in which the maximum likelihood analysis may be improved.

Notes: Summary Although β-Blockers are structurally closely related, there are marked differences in the extent of metabolism, related mainly to relative lipophilicity. Lipophilic β-Blockers are metabolized by C-oxidative pathways and glucuronidation. Metabolism of lipophilic β-Blockers is important in determining pharmacokinetics, formation of active metabolites, stereoselectivity and isomer preference, and interphenotypic variation. The oxidative clearance of metoprolol, timolol and bufuralol is regulated/influenced by the debrisoquine hydroxylation gene locus. The metabolism of these lipophilic β-Blockers thus exhibits polymorphic characteristics, there being significant interphenotype differences in pharmacokinetics (bioavailability, peak plasma level, plasma terminal t1/2) between the poor and extensive metabolizers of debrisoquine. There are similar interphenotype differences in β-blocker pharmacodynamics in terms of β-blockade. A number of adverse effects of lipophilic β-Blockers have been hypothesized to predominate in the poor metabolizer phenotype including unacceptable bradycardia, loss of cardioselectivity, greater CNS side-effects, and interactions with drugs metabolized by the same polymorphic systems. However, objective evidence for this is lacking.

Notes: Abstract Experimental results are presented for the lifetime in creep rupture of single graphite fibres. The fibres were extracted from unsized, Hercules IM6 tows and were tested at a gauge length of 5 cm under standard ambient conditions (21°C, 50% r.h.). The results were analysed using a theoretical model which embodies Weibull distributions for both strength and lifetime, and a power-law relationship for lifetime against stress level. Using maximum likelihood techniques, the Weibull shape parameter values for strength and lifetime were found to be about 4.6 and 0.015, respectively, and the power-law exponent was about 300, but could be as low as 250. As expected, this exponent was close in value to the ratio of the respective Weibull shape parameter values. Using the Kaplan-Meier estimator for censored data, the goodness of fit of the model to the data was found to be excellent.

Notes: Summary Mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) restriction endonuclease fragment patterns and patterns of mtDNA hybridized by mitochondrial gene probes were used to study phylogenetic relationships of seven Pennisetum species, including five P. americanum (pearl millet) ecotypes and a reference species from the distantly related genus, Panicum. The restriction patterns of the pearl millet ecotypes were uniform with the exception of the ecotype collected in Ethiopia. The probe hybridization method revealed more variability, with both the Rhodesian and Ethiopian ecotypes differing from the others and from each other. Considerable restriction pattern polymorphism was noted among different species of Pennisetum, and Panicum. Significant relationships were noted of Pennisetum polystachyon to P. pedicellatum and of P. purpureum to P. squamulatum using the restriction pattern method. In addition to those relationships, the hybridization method showed relationships of pearl millet to P. purpureum and to P. squamulatum. The relationships noted between species by the hybridization method agreed more closely to the cytological data than those indicated by the restriction pattern method. Therefore, the hybridization method appeared to be the preferred method for studying species relationships. The mitochondrial genome size of pearl millet was calculated to be 407 kb and the mitochondrial genome sizes of other Pennisetum species ranged from 341 to 486 kb.

Notes: Summary Chloroplast (ct) and mitochondrial (mt) DNAs were isolated from two subspecies of rice (Oryza sativa), japonica (Calrose 76) and indica (PI353705) and compared by restriction endonuclease fragment pattern analysis. Similarly, PI353705 (A5) mtDNA was also compared with the mtDNA of its long term tissue cultured line, BL2. Variation in the ctDNA of the 2 subspecies was detected with two (AvaI and BglI) of the 11 restriction endonucleases tested, whereas their mtDNAs showed considerable variation when restricted by PstI, BamHI, HindIII and XhoI endonucleases. Thus, the chloroplast DNA was more highly conserved than the mtDNA in the subspecies comparisons. Only minor variation was observed between the restriction endonuclease patterns of the mtDNAs of BL2 and A5. Southern blots of mtDNA were hybridized with heterologous probes from maize and spinach organelle genes. Differences were found in the hybridization patterns of the two subspecies for six of the eight (mitochondrial and chloroplast) probes tested. Two of the seven (mitochondrial) probes (coxII and 26S rRNA) detected tissue culture generated variation in mtDNA. The relative values of restriction endonuclease and hybridization patterns for studying phylogenetic and genetic relationships in rice are discussed.

Notes: Abstract The generalized corresponding-states principle (GCSP), based on the properties of two nonspherical reference fluids, has been shown to be a powerful technique for the correlation and prediction of thermodynamic properties. In this work we show GCSP calculations of enthalpy and enropy departures for pure fluids and fluid mixtures. The mixtures studied include those conforming well to traditional corresponding states theory (e.g., n-pentane + n-octane), as well as those that have not hitherto been amenable to such treatments (e.g., n-pentane + ethanol). It is shown that the GCSP method works well for all classes of mixtures and compares favorably with other methods of prediction. The use of cubic equations of state to represent the reference fluids gives the GCSP method flexibility while maintaining accuracy in the prediction. No adjustable parameters are required in the GCSP calculations of enthalpy and entropy departures.

Notes: Abstract We have analysed experimental data on the tensile strength of carbon fibres and bundles of parallel carbon fibres. These data are used to assess whether theoretical relations between the strengths of fibres and different kinds of bundles are consistent with experiment. The analysis confirms the presence of a hybrid effect, and also that the classical Weibull relations between strength and length are not apparently satisfied for bundles. It is suggested that the latter observation might be an effect of the random variation of fibre diameter, and some consequences of this are examined.
