Notes: The infrared absorption spectrum of the carbon dioxide–acetylene van der Waals complex has been observed in a pulsed molecular beam. A color center laser was used to excite the vibration associated with the antisymmetric hydrogen stretching mode of the acetylene monomer. The vibrational origin is 3281.740 cm−1 and the rotational constants are A‘=8876, B‘=2859, C‘=2155, A'=8864, B'=2855, and C'=2154 MHz. The axes of the two monomer are parallel to one another and the complex has C2v symmetry. The separation of the monomer units is 3.285 A(ring). The angular part of the intermolecular potential function is discussed in terms of electrostatic interactions between distributed multipole moments.

Notes: Radio frequency, microwave, and infrared spectra have been obtained from molecular beams of acetylene dimer. The geometry of the isomer studied here is T shaped, with the centers of mass of the monomers separated by 4.38 A(ring). The equilibrium structure appears not to have C2v symmetry and the vibrationally averaged structure has the "top'' of the T rotated about its center of mass by 27°. The electric dipole moment of this complex is 0.28 D.

Notes: The magnetic measurements on the single crystals of octahydrated neodymium selenate have been carried out in the temperature range 90–300 K. The results are very close to that reported for the isomorphous Nd-sulfate. The observed magnetic moment shows a nearly smooth linear variation with temperature and a least squares fit of the Curie–Weiss law to the observed χ¯ yielded −44.5 K as the paramagnetic Curie temperature. An analysis of the results has been made with a crystal field (CF) of D4 symmetry and an excellent simulation of the observed magnetic behavior of Nd3+ ion in selenate and sulfate was obtained. The CF splitting of the ground and excited multiplets of the ground term and the corresponding eigenfunctions were obtained by the simultaneous diagonalization of the CF and spin orbit interaction matrix in the complete 52-dimensional basis of the 4I term; intermediate coupling was also taken care of to a large extent. The g factors and the anomaly in the electronic heat capacity have been determined. The effect of the proposed CF on the nuclear level splitting and its consequences have been worked out and discussed.

Notes: Summary The kinetics of the aquation of four selenitoaquobisdiamine)cobalt(III) complexes to their respective diaquabis-(diamine)complexes (diamine=ethylenediamine en, propylenediamine pn, dimethylethylenediamine me2en and trimethylenediamine tmd) have been carried out conductimetrically in the 25–45 °C range. All reactions exhibit simple first order kinetics, and the rates increase with increasing temperature. In aqueous solution, the complex species exist in equilibrium with their respective hydroxo species, but only the hydroxo species are involved in the aquation process. This result is also reflected in the linear Arrhenius plot. The rates are higher in a 10% alcoholic solution than in water, but then decrease with increase in the alcohol content. A Grunwald-Winstein plot of rates in methanol yields slopes of 0.18 ± 0.04, 0.27±0.03, 0.43±0.03 and 0.34±0.02 for the four amines respectively. A dissociation mechanism is proposed for the aquation of all these complexes.

Notes: Abstract Chloropromazine (CPZ) and imipramine at a concentration of 1×10−3 M inhibit rat brain mitochondrial monoamine oxidase activity in vitro by 70 and 55% respectively, while lithium, even at a concentration of 0.05 M, inhibits the activity of this enzyme very negligibly (4%). In vivo, these drugs at a dose level of 56 mg CPZ, 76 mg Jimipramine and 76 mg lithium chloride/Kg body wt., did not cause any observable variation from normal in brain mitochondrial monoamine oxidase activity.

Notes: Abstract The effects of some organophosphate pesticides, e.g. lebaycid, metacid and metasystox on the monoamine oxidase (MAO) activity in rat brain mitochondria have been studied. These pesticides cause significant inhibition of MAO activityin vitro but have negligible effects on its activityin vivo.

Notes: Summary Cauliflower damping-off caused byRhizoctonia solani was found to be appreciably reduced when population of the pathogen and other microflora in soil was manipulated by using powders of commercial cellulose, rice stubbles or waterhyacinth biomass in combination with NH4NO3 as soil amendments. Cellulose powder was most effective in reducing the disease incidence. Some of the amendments also promoted seedling growth. Total microbial population as well as those showing antagonism to the pathogen in culture increased relatively more in amended soil than in nonamended control. In general, when C∶N ratio in soil increased, fungal population decreased but actinomycetes and bacterial population increased.

Notes: Summary To determine the possible changes in soil characteristics and plant growth resulting from SO2-exposure, field grownVicia faba plants were exposed to 0.5 ppm SO2 for 4 h daily from 40 to 100 days of their ages. The major effects of SO2 on soil system includes increases in contents of total sulphur, organic carbon and exchangeable Al; lowering of pH and decreases in contents of N, P and exchangeable K and Ca. Besides, SO2 interfered with nutrient uptake and plant growth leading to reductions in lengths of root and shoot, numbers of leaves, nodules and pods, phytomass accumulation and net primary productivity.

Notes: Abstract A new mycotoxin (AcT1) was obtained from the mycelium of Aspergillus candidus Link isolated from rough rice stored under tropical conditions. AcT1 with the mol-formula C28H40O showed bright greenish blue fluorescence under uv (254 nm). The spectral and other characteristics indicated that the compound was a new one. The LD50 of the toxin on white rats was found to be 4.5 mg/Kg when injected intraperitoneally.
