Notes: Summary The kinetics of the aquation of four selenitoaquobisdiamine)cobalt(III) complexes to their respective diaquabis-(diamine)complexes (diamine=ethylenediamine en, propylenediamine pn, dimethylethylenediamine me2en and trimethylenediamine tmd) have been carried out conductimetrically in the 25–45 °C range. All reactions exhibit simple first order kinetics, and the rates increase with increasing temperature. In aqueous solution, the complex species exist in equilibrium with their respective hydroxo species, but only the hydroxo species are involved in the aquation process. This result is also reflected in the linear Arrhenius plot. The rates are higher in a 10% alcoholic solution than in water, but then decrease with increase in the alcohol content. A Grunwald-Winstein plot of rates in methanol yields slopes of 0.18 ± 0.04, 0.27±0.03, 0.43±0.03 and 0.34±0.02 for the four amines respectively. A dissociation mechanism is proposed for the aquation of all these complexes.

Notes: Abstract Chloropromazine (CPZ) and imipramine at a concentration of 1×10−3 M inhibit rat brain mitochondrial monoamine oxidase activity in vitro by 70 and 55% respectively, while lithium, even at a concentration of 0.05 M, inhibits the activity of this enzyme very negligibly (4%). In vivo, these drugs at a dose level of 56 mg CPZ, 76 mg Jimipramine and 76 mg lithium chloride/Kg body wt., did not cause any observable variation from normal in brain mitochondrial monoamine oxidase activity.

Notes: Abstract The effects of some organophosphate pesticides, e.g. lebaycid, metacid and metasystox on the monoamine oxidase (MAO) activity in rat brain mitochondria have been studied. These pesticides cause significant inhibition of MAO activityin vitro but have negligible effects on its activityin vivo.

Notes: Summary Cauliflower damping-off caused byRhizoctonia solani was found to be appreciably reduced when population of the pathogen and other microflora in soil was manipulated by using powders of commercial cellulose, rice stubbles or waterhyacinth biomass in combination with NH4NO3 as soil amendments. Cellulose powder was most effective in reducing the disease incidence. Some of the amendments also promoted seedling growth. Total microbial population as well as those showing antagonism to the pathogen in culture increased relatively more in amended soil than in nonamended control. In general, when C∶N ratio in soil increased, fungal population decreased but actinomycetes and bacterial population increased.

Notes: Summary To determine the possible changes in soil characteristics and plant growth resulting from SO2-exposure, field grownVicia faba plants were exposed to 0.5 ppm SO2 for 4 h daily from 40 to 100 days of their ages. The major effects of SO2 on soil system includes increases in contents of total sulphur, organic carbon and exchangeable Al; lowering of pH and decreases in contents of N, P and exchangeable K and Ca. Besides, SO2 interfered with nutrient uptake and plant growth leading to reductions in lengths of root and shoot, numbers of leaves, nodules and pods, phytomass accumulation and net primary productivity.

Notes: Abstract A new mycotoxin (AcT1) was obtained from the mycelium of Aspergillus candidus Link isolated from rough rice stored under tropical conditions. AcT1 with the mol-formula C28H40O showed bright greenish blue fluorescence under uv (254 nm). The spectral and other characteristics indicated that the compound was a new one. The LD50 of the toxin on white rats was found to be 4.5 mg/Kg when injected intraperitoneally.

Notes: Abstract The phase-function method is adapted to deal with scattering on Coulomb plus nonlocal separable potentials. The Coulomb effect is included rigorously and a closed form expression is obtained for the scattering phase shiftδ l (k). Based on the expression forδ l (k) we present results forα-α elastic scattering phases which compare very well with more detailed calculations.

Notes: Abstract A solvent extraction procedure for the separation of niobium and tantalum has been developed. The method consists of extracting tantalum from its aqueous mixture with niobium, with the help of di(2-ethylhexyl)phosphoric acid (HDEHP) in n-heptane. The aqueous feed consists of niobium and tantalum in an aqueous medium containing hydrochloric and oxalic acids. The concentrations of niobium and tantalum were raised to 1 mg/ml in the aqueous solution. The extraction efficiency of tantalum under these conditions was found to be ∼85%. Effects of chloride and oxalate ions as well as those of the concentration of HDEHP on the extraction efficiency were studied and discussed in detail.
