    Notes: AbstractThe authors point out that there is little in the academic literature about the way ideas for new products emerge and how the emergence is managed. They have identified the main top management problem as the strategic one of achieving the right balance between resources put into new product search and those put into current business operations. To obtain more information on good and bad practice in this area they have investigated how a specially selected sample of small to medium-sized Canadian technological companies actually carry out new product search.The research method was to ascertain how far corporate goals, organization structures and corporate values affected the effectiveness of new product search. Unstructured interviews were conducted with senior staff in the companies, during which information was sought about company goals, innovation strategy, internal relationships and how these impinged on the genesis of 35 projects.The authors found an important corporate goal spurring innovation was growth (or survival), to be achieved by using new products to dominate their markets. R&D was oriented to achieving a technical edge, though not necessarily a radical breakthrough in market driven ways. Few had effective formal strategic plans for new product search. On the whole, top managements emphasized the importance of individual initiative and commitment to get results and the necessity of open communication throughout the organization.Overall, this research reveals once more that any organization that wishes to pursue a strategy of product innovation has to build a climate which explicitly favours that strategy. Corporate strategy, itself, has a major influence on that climate. New product search requires resources and a place in the strategic plan but the extent to which it can be formalized is limited. It must be possible for new ideas, wherever generated, to emerge and gather momentum informally.

    Notes: Abstract The interaction between nitrate and ammonium uptake was examined as a function of preconditioning growth rate and nitrogen source by adding nitrate, ammonium, or both to nitrogen-sufficient,-deficient, and-starvedSkeletonema costatum (Grev.) Cleve and nitrogen-deficientChaetoceros debilis Cleve. By simultaneously measuring the internal accumulation of intermediates of nitrogen assimilation and the rates of nitrogen assimilation, the metabolic control of nitrogen uptake could be assessed. After the simultaneous addition of nitrate and ammonium to culture, both nitrate and ammonium uptake rates were decreased in comparison with the rates observed when each was added alone, although nitrate uptake was usually decreased more than ammonium uptake. Since both nitrate and ammonium uptake rates vary with time, preconditioning growth conditions, nitrogen sources present, and species, it was necessary to use several different indices to quantify inhibition. In general, ammonium inhibition of nitrate uptake inS. costatum was greatest in cultures preconditioned to ammonium and those at low growth rates, whereas ammonium uptake was inhibited most in cultures preconditioned to nitrate. In nitrogen-deficientC. debilis, nitrate uptake was more inhibited by ammonium, but uptake returned to normal rates more quickly than inS. costatum, whereas inhibition of ammonium uptake was similar. These results explain why the interaction between nitrate and ammonium uptake in the field can be so variable. Inhibition of uptake is not controlled by internal ammonium or total amino acids, nor is it related to the inability to reduce nitrate. Instead, inhibition must be determined in part by the external concentration of nitrogen compounds and in part by some intermediate(s) of nitrogen assimilation present inside the cell.

    Notes: Abstract This investigation concerns the application of a special method of successive approximations to the solution of a practically motivated, nonlinear problem of the bending of a uniformly loaded circular plate supported on a concentric circle. Numerical results are obtained for a range of plate-radius/support-radius ratios, and the former are found to be in good agreement with the results of experiments.

    Description: ATP-sensitive potassium channels (K ATP channels) are critical nutrient sensors in many mammalian tissues. In the pancreas, K ATP channels are essential for coupling glucose metabolism to insulin secretion. While orthologous genes for many components of metabolism–secretion coupling in mammals are present in lower vertebrates, their expression, functionality and ultimate impact on body glucose homeostasis are unclear. In this paper, we demonstrate that zebrafish islet β-cells express functional K ATP channels of similar subunit composition, structure and metabolic sensitivity to their mammalian counterparts. We further show that pharmacological activation of native zebrafish K ATP using diazoxide, a specific K ATP channel opener, is sufficient to disturb glucose tolerance in adult zebrafish. That β-cell K ATP channel expression and function are conserved between zebrafish and mammals illustrates the evolutionary conservation of islet metabolic sensing from fish to humans, and lends relevance to the use of zebrafish to model islet glucose sensing and diseases of membrane excitability such as neonatal diabetes.

    Description: Measurements of snow properties across and down snow slopes have been used to calculate a safety margin — the difference between the basal shear strength and the applied static stress. Areas of basal deficit exist when the applied shear stress exceeds the basal shear strength (the safety margin is negative), and basal areas are pinned when the safety margin is positive. As the size of deficit increases, stresses within the overlying slab also increase, and these may be sufficient to cause an avalanche.Measurements made on five slopes (four of which had avalanched) were characterized by considerable spatial variability, and the safety margin has been treated as a random function which varies over the slope. Statistical models of Vanmarcke (1977[a], 1983) have been applied to determine the most likely size of deficit required for avalanching (95% confidence). In one case, an avalanche occurred when the length of deficit was only 2.9 m, and in the other cases the length was always less than 7 m. This size of deficit is small compared with the total area of many avalanche slopes which suggests that avalanches initiate from small zones of deficit, and makes it difficult to locate a deficit with just a few tests.The optimum sampling interval and number of tests required to yield an adequate estimate of the statistical parameters of the safety margin are also discussed.

    Description: Two air-permeability devices were developed and measurements were made to study the relationship between air permeability and structure of different snow types. Permeabilities varied both with position and direction in the snow-pack, and changed with time as metamorphic changes occurred. A marked increase of air permeability was noted as faceted crystals grew due to radiation recrystallization. In other observations, as a snow-pack densified and crystals became more rounded (destructive metamorphism) the air permeability decreased. Measurements were made of air permeability of snows that had been subjected to a creeping tensile strain, and initial tests indicated that the changes in air permeability due to strain, even to rupture, were significant, but small compared with the intrinsic variability of snow.

    Description: A simple field test of snow-slope stability is proposed, which allows decisions about a number of factors recently described by Conway and Abrahamson (1984). These include spatial variation of snow strength along a slope, and progression of failure from a localized initial failure. Strength within the snow slab is considered as well as that at its base. A snow saw is required for the test and, because a number of tests can be made in a few minutes, much information on the state of the slope can be obtained in a practical time.
