    Description: Vetigastropoda, comprising marine gastropods of both snail-like and limpet-like form, were common during the Palaeozoic and remain so in modern marine environments. The most resolved molecular phylogenetic study to date at the family level in Vetigastropoda was based on molecular data of complete mitochondrial genomes, but only 15 mitochondrial genomes are available and the taxonomic coverage remains insufficient to resolve many systematic questions. Notably, among the vetigastropod superfamilies, ‘Trochoidea’ is the most diverse, but no mitogenome has been yet published for its representative family Trochidae. We here provided eight newly reconstructed mitogenomes from the following vetigastropods: Angaria delphinus, Phasianella australis, Astralium haematragum, Lunella granulata, Chlorostoma argyrostomum, Omphalius nigerrimus , Stomatella planulata and Variegemarginula punctata. Stomatella planulata is the first available mitogenome for Trochidae. Our analyses of the extended mitogenome dataset show that the two trochoid families Turbinidae and Tegulidae group together, while their relationship to Trochidae (represented by S. planulata ) is uncertain. Within the Tegulidae, monophyly of the genus Tegula is not recovered. The analysis with additional fissurelloid mitogenome confirms that within Vetigastropoda this superfamily is a distinct clade. Except for V. punctata the mitogenomes reconstructed show the ancestral gene order for Vetigastropoda. The additional fissurelloid mitogenome reveals that gene order in Fissurelloidea is variable, which might suggest a faster rate of mitochondrial evolution that in turn may cause artefacts in phylogenetic analyses.

    Description: New type one component UV and thermal curable hybrid epoxy adhesive was successfully developed. The hybrid epoxy adhesive is complete initiator free composition. Neither photo-initiator nor thermal initiator is contained. The hybrid adhesive is mainly composed of special designed liquid bismaleimide, partially acrylated epoxy resin, acrylic monomer, epoxy resin and latent curing agent. Its UV light and thermal cure behavior was studied by FT-IR spectroscopy and FT-Raman spectroscopy. Adhesive samples cured at UV only, thermal only and UV + thermal cure conditions were investigated. By calculated conversion rate of double bond in both acrylic component and maleimide compound, satisfactory light curability of the hybrid epoxy adhesive was confirmed quantitatively. The investigation results also showed that its UV cure components, acrylic and bismalimide, possess good thermal curability too.     Notes: A temperature gradient imposed across a binary fluid layer with a nonzero Soret coefficient will induce a solute concentration gradient. The ratio of these two gradients is proportional to the separation ratio χ, a property of the fluid. Similarly, the ratio of the thermal and solutal Marangoni numbers, which are nondimensional increments in surface tension due to changes in temperature and concentration, is also proportional to the separation ratio. As a consequence, the stability of a given binary fluid layer with a free surface under zero gravity depends only on the temperature difference, ΔT, imposed across the layer or, equivalently, on the thermal Marangoni number, M, albeit the dependence, is rather complicated. When the gravity is nonzero but of small magnitude, such that the buoyancy effects are not dominant, the stability characteristics of the layer are functions of two parameters, M and R, the thermal Rayleigh number. In this paper, the stability of such a binary layer under zero and reduced gravity by means of linear stability analysis is studied. Results show that the nature of the instability depends on the product χK, where K is a material constant=(α/αS)(γS/γ), with α and αS denoting the volumetric expansion coefficient due to temperature and solute concentration, respectively, and γ and γS the rate of change of surface tension with respect to temperature and solute concentration, respectively. Both χ and K can assume positive and negative values. Under zero gravity, instability at the critical value of M onsets in steady convection if χK〈0 and in oscillating convection if χK(approximately-greater-than)0. For a layer that is being heated from below and K(approximately-greater-than)0, the steady instability in the case of χK〈0 can be rendered stable by subjecting the layer to a gravity of small magnitude. But for χK(approximately-greater-than)0, the effect of gravity is always destabilizing.

    Notes: It is shown that the steady onset of salt finger convection in a double-diffusive layer is exactly analogous to the small-gap Taylor–Couette problem. The results presented by Chandrasekhar [Hydrodynamics and Hydromagnetic Stability (Clarendon, Oxford, 1961)] for the Taylor–Couette problem are extended to cover a wider range of application in the present case.

    Notes: The effect of surface tension on the stability of a double-diffusive layer is considered using linear stability analysis. The surface tension is assumed to vary linearly with temperature and solute concentration. The eigenvalue problem is solved by the Galerkin method. Results show that the predicted stability boundary based on Marangoni effects alone is completely altered in the presence of buoyancy effects induced by low gravity levels (∼10−5 g). At reduced gravity levels, salt-finger instability may onset in the overstable mode due to the stabilizing effect of surface tension. Fluid properties in terms of the Prandtl and the Lewis numbers have a profound effect on the stability conditions; opposite stability characteristics are found in salt solutions and in molten metals. In the diffusive case, the competition between the surface-tension and the double-diffusive effects can generate bimodal marginal stability curves, thus resulting in the simultaneous occurrence of two instability modes with different wave numbers and oscillation frequencies.

    Notes: The onset of thermal convection due to heating from below in a system consisting of a fluid layer overlying a porous layer with anisotropic permeability and thermal diffusivity is studied. Flow in the porous medium is assumed to be governed by Darcy's law; the Beavers–Joseph condition is applied at the interface between the two layers. The linear perturbation equations are solved numerically. It is found that the effects of anisotropy on the onset of thermal convection are most profound for small values of the depth ratio ζ (ratio of fluid layer thickness to porous layer thickness), since in that case, the onset of convection corresponds to significant motion in both layers. For fixed values of the vertical permeability in the porous medium, decreasing the value of ξ (ratio of horizontal to vertical permeability) leads to stabilization of the superposed layer configuration because of increased resistance to motion in the porous medium. For larger values of ζ, the onset of motion is increasingly confined to the fluid layer, with the transport of heat through the porous layer occurring primarily by conduction. Accordingly, the influence of ξ on the stability characteristics for larger ζ is less significant than the effects of an anisotropic thermal conductivity.

    Notes: Abstract The flow structures in the near field of the unducted wake region behind a circular disc for annular flow at low Reynolds numbers were studied by smoke-wire flow visualization technique. A twisted-dual-wire was employed to perform the time evolving visualization. Three typical characteristic flow modes: Q-tip, open-top toroid, and closed toroid, were identified in the near disc region. For Reynolds number between 130 and 390, the Q-tip flow mode which subject to a periodic up-down oscillatory motion was observed. The open-top toroid mode which experiences the expelling vortex shedding was found for Reynolds number between 390 and 455. The free separation surface turns around and merges to the central axisymmetric axis to form the conventionally observed toroidal recirculation bubble for Reynolds number higher than 455. The closed toroid mode exhibits both expelling and shear-layer vortex sheddings. With the identified flow modes at low Reynolds numbers, the recirculation contours, recirculation length, and the shedding frequency in each mode were measured and discussed.

    Description: We previously presented DriverDB, a database that incorporates ~6000 cases of exome-seq data, in addition to annotation databases and published bioinformatics algorithms dedicated to driver gene/mutation identification. The database provides two points of view, ‘Cancer’ and ‘Gene’, to help researchers visualize the relationships between cancers and driver genes/mutations. In the updated DriverDBv2 database ( http://ngs.ym.edu.tw/driverdb ) presented herein, we incorporated 〉9500 cancer-related RNA-seq datasets and 〉7000 more exome-seq datasets from The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA), International Cancer Genome Consortium (ICGC), and published papers. Seven additional computational algorithms (meaning that the updated database contains 15 in total), which were developed for driver gene identification, are incorporated into our analysis pipeline, and the results are provided in the ‘Cancer’ section. Furthermore, there are two main new features, ‘Expression’ and ‘Hotspot’, in the ‘Gene’ section. ‘Expression’ displays two expression profiles of a gene in terms of sample types and mutation types, respectively. ‘Hotspot’ indicates the hotspot mutation regions of a gene according to the results provided by four bioinformatics tools. A new function, ‘Gene Set’, allows users to investigate the relationships among mutations, expression levels and clinical data for a set of genes, a specific dataset and clinical features.
