Notes: A discussion is given of the unidirectional, but nonuniform stretch of long, wide strips of film. It is observed that each of the material functions, τ, β, γ, in a recently proposed unidimensional theory of neck formation and cold drawing for bars of small but not zero thickness is determined, in the case of a strip of film, by the strain-dependent shear modulus μ of the three-dimensional material of which the bar is composed. The dependence of the shear modulus μ on shear strain and of τ, β,and γ on axial stretch is evaluated for a model of an elastic material susceptible to cold drawing, and the calculated values of τ, β,and γ, are used to draw film profiles for various stages of neck formation.

Notes: An asymptotic formula has been obtained for the axial tension in nonlinear viscoelastic fibers undergoing inhomogeneous stretch. The formula, which is valid to within an error of the fourth order in diameter, expresses the tension per unit cross-sectional area in terms of the history of the local axial stretch and its first two derivatives with respect to distance along the fiber axis. The theory obtained by treating the formula as exact is consistent with thermodynamical principles, and permits computation of the stretch field resulting from a specified tensile loading history. Numerical results for creep under static load show that for an appropriate class of materials with slowly fading memory there is a range of applied loads for which an initially homogeneous deformation evolves into a well-defined neck whose edges, after a period of relatively quiescent incubation, advance rapidly along the fiber and in so doing transform moderately stretched material into highly stretched, i.e., drawn material. The calculated fiber profiles and the predicted dynamics of neck formation are in accord with familiar observations of neck formation in polymeric materials susceptible to cold drawing.

Notes: Blends of polyimide isomers containing hexafluoroisopropylidene in the central moiety of the diamine residue have been studied. The isomers differed by having either a meta or a para linkage between the diamine and dianhydride residues. The miscibility of these materials was investigated by studying the glass transition temperature behavior using differential scanning calorimetry. Mixtures of isomer pairs, such as 6FDA-6FmDA and 6FDA-6FpDA, exhibited one glass transition temperature. Tg, and were therefore miscible. Mixtures of nonisomer pairs exhibited two Tg's and were immiscible. The gas sorption and transport properties of the blends of the 6FDA-6FmDA and 6FDA-6FpDA isomers were characterized for a variety of gases at 35°C for pressures up to 60 atm. The permeabilities and permselectivities in the miscible blends fell between those of the pure components and were approximately logarithmic averages of the pure component properties. The miscibility of the polyimide isomers enables one to tailor the composition of the material to optimize the gas separation and mechanical properties. © 1993 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notes: The autoignition temperature and composition of 15 carbon-filled fluoroelastomers have been determined. These experimental data and three sets of literature data are used to examine the relationship between autoignition temperature and rubber composition. The autoignition temperature at an elevated oxygen pressure is strongly affected by the carbon black content in rubbers. An empirical equation is derived and can be used to predict the autoignition temperature of carbon-filled fluoroelastomers based on the carbon black content.

Notes: An enriched preparation of rat hepatocyte couplets was obtaied by collagense perfusion and subsequent elutriation (〉 85 per cent couplets and triplets; viability of over 95 per cent).Canalicular secretory activity (the ability to accumulate cholyl-lysyl-fluorescein, CLF) was first apparent after 2 h of culture at 37°C and was present in over 80 per cent of the total population after 5-6 h. This remained almost constant for at least 4 h in both elutriated and directly plated cells. Initial storage of freshly prepared couplets at 4°C for up to 6 h prior to incubation had no adverse effect upon secretory function.Reduction of canalicular secretory activity occurred at a concentration of the hepatotoxic agent menadione (IC50 17 μM) that was lower than that required to induce mild plasma-membrane blebbing (IC50 43 μM).This study has optimized and characterized the canalicular secretory effectiveness and stability of an enriched preparation of hepatocyte couplets, and established the feasibility of studies of toxic agents on hepatobiliary function in a heterogeneous population of hepatocytes. In this preparation other biochemical parameters can be assessed, thus complementing previous techniques using individual couplets.
