Notes: Abstract Excess molar enthalpies h E and excess molar volumes v E of the binary liquid mixtures 2-hexanone+n-alkane (from n-heptane to n-decane) have been determined for various values of the mole fraction of hexanone at 35°C and atmospheric pressure. Excess molar enthalpies were determined by Calvet microcalorimetry and v E from densities measured by vibratingtube densimetry. The results are compared with the predictions of several group contribution models.

Notes: Abstract Molar excess enthalpies H E at 298.15 K and atmospheric pressure were determined for 12 binary liquid mixtures, 1-fluoropentane, 1-fluorohexane, or 1-fluorononane + a non-polar solvent (hexane, cyclohexane, benzene, or tetrachloromethane) and were interpreted by the DISQUAC group contribution model. 1-Fluoroalkane + n-alkane mixtures are characterized by two types of groups or contact surfaces, fluorine (F) and alkane (CH3, CH2), the remaining mixtures by the additional contact surfaces of the solvents (C6H12 C6H6, or CCl4). The interchange energies, entirely dispersive, of the alkane-solvent contacts were determined independently from the study of solvent-alkane mixtures. The dispersive F-alkane parameters were assumed to equal the parameters of perfluoroalkanes + n-alkanes. The shape of the H E curves of 1-fluorolkane + polarizable solvent (C6H6, CCl4) mixtures are best reproduced by the model when the quasi-chemical F-solvent parameters are assumed to equal zero. The quasi-chemical F-alkane (the same for n-alkanes and cyclohexane) and the dispersive F-solvent parameters were estimated in this work. The 1-fluoroalkane solutions in C6H6 or CCl4 exhibit the characteristic features of polar solute + polarizable solvent mixtures, viz., the deviations from the ideality are less positive than in alkanes and the experimental H E curves are strongly asymmetrical.

Notes: Abstract Excess molar enthalpies hE at 25 and 35° C and atmospheric pressure, are reported for the binary mixtures formed by a 2-butanone and 2-pentanone with 1-chlorobutane, 1-chloropentane, 1-chlorohexane, or 1-chlorooctane. The hE values for all the mixtures are positive, increasing as the 1-chloroalkane length increases and as the ketone length decreases. Excess molar enthalpies depend slightly on the temperature. The experimental values together with those from the literature were used to calculate the interaction parameters for the Dang-Tassios version of the UNIFAC model.

Notes: Abstract Literature data for vapor-liquid equilibria, activity coefficients at infinite dilution and enthalpies of mixing of 1-chloroalkanes or α,ω-dichloroalkanes + alkyl alkanoates were examined on the basis of the DISQUAC group-contribution model. The interaction parameters for the COO/CI contacts are reported. The quasi-chemical parameters of 1-chloroalkane or long chain α,ω-dichloroalkanes are zero but become increasingly negative for short chain α,ω-dichloroalkanes. The model provides a fairly consistent description of the experiment data. The properties of many other systems can be predicted using the same set of parameters.

Notes: Abstract Since the beginning of this century evidence has accumulated which demonstrates that non-mammalian vertebrates possess photoreceptors situated deep within the brain. While many attempts have been made to localize these sensory cells, studies have either failed or been inconclusive. In this report we have used several experimental approaches to localize the deep brain photoreceptors of the lizard Anolis carolinensis. Using 3 antibodies that bind vertebrate cone opsins, we have immunolabelled cerebrospinal fluid (CSF)-contacting neurons located at the ventricular border within the nucleus ventromedialis of the septum. Western blot analysis indicates that these antibodies recognized a single 40 kD protein in ocular, anterior brain, and pineal extracts. Immunoblots of rodent brain did not show a similar protein band. We have also identified specific retinoids associated with phototransduction (11-cis and all-trans-3,4-didehydroretinaldehyde) within anterior brain extracts. This combined data provides the most detailed analysis of deep brain photoreceptors in any vertebrate. Consequently, we feel Anolis provides an excellent model to study this unexplored sensory system of the vertebrates.

Notes: Abstract The Neogene is the period in which the Betic Cordillera, the Rif, and the Alboran Sea acquired their present configuration. The Neogene sediments of the Betic Internal Zones (located directly to the North of the Alboran Sea) show the effects of important periods of deformation. Deposition was clearly controlled by tectonics. Therefore the generation, evolution, and total or partial destruction of basins and the formation of new, often superimposed, basins are common phenomena, according to the locations of the basins in the Betic Cordillera and to the different geodynamic situations.

Notes: Abstract Alkaline phosphatase activity (APA) was determined in 44 species of marine macrophytes collected throughout 1991 and 1992 along the southern coast of Spain. Activity varied between 0.83 μmol paranitrophenol (pNP) released g-1 dry wt h-1 in Ulva rigida var. gigantea and 238.8 μmol pNP g-1 dry wt h-1 in Bangia fuscopurpurea. Using a histochemical method, APA sites were located in five of these species: Corallina elongata Ellis et Soland, Gelidium latifolium (Grev.) Thur. et Born., G. sesquipedale (Clem.) Born. et Thur., Porphyra umbilicalis (L.) Kützing and Zostera noltii Hornem. Enzymatic activity was found in the outer part of the thallus, either on the cell wall or in the cortical cells. In the marine phanerogam Z. noltii activity was also located in the vascular bundle. The results suggest that APA is present in many, if not all, marine macrophytes from southern Spain, and plays a relevant role in the utilization of dissolved organic phosphorus compounds.

Notes: Abstract BaTiO3 ceramics, sintered from powders previously synthesized using TiO2 of different characteristics, have been studied. The microstructural development depended on the crystalline nature and impurity types and levels, when the same sintering schedules were applied. Anatase leads to BaTiO3 powders which showed a controlled grain growth after sintering. Rutile with very low impurity levels gave materials in which a non-uniform grain growth was promoted. Dielectric constant and loss tangent were measured and correlated with the density and microstructure. From these correlations, it seems that the raw materials' nature has a greater effect on the dielectric properties that the sintering schedule of a given material.
