    Notes: A screening design is used to establish the contribution of various parameters to the roughness of cylindrical extrudates. A dimensionless response variable is proposed to characterize the extrudate roughness, and the effects of ten parameters on this roughness response were examined. Two polyethylenes (one high density and one linear low density) were investigated using a 45 mm single screw extruder. The results show that the main parameters affecting the extrudate roughness are, in order of importance, apparent shear stress at the die wall, die diameter, ratio of die length to diameter, and type of polymer. The other six parameters (the use of an additive, recycling, type of entrance adapter, die material, die temperature, melt temperature) were found to have a non-significant contribution to roughness.

    Notes: The kinetics of methyl methacrylate (MMA) polymerization, and of its copolymerization with various acrylates, at high conversions in the presence of a chain transfer agent, are investigated with a dilatometer over the entire course of reaction. The displacement to higher conversions of the onset of the gel effect in the MMA homopolymerization, in the presence of a chain transfer agent, was determined. Similar information is also provided for the MMA-acrylate copolymerization systems. An increase in polymerization temperature slightly delays the onset of the gel effect in the MMA-acrylate copolymerization, but considerably increases the final conversion. The final conversion in copolymerization for a constant concentration of the chain transfer agent is independent of the initiator concentration, but is a function of the polymerization temperature. The reaction time for reaching the limiting conversion in copolymerization is increased with an increasing amount of the second monomer, as well as with an increasing number of carbon atoms in the acrylate used as the second monomer. © 1993 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

    Notes: Microporous polymer supports for the immobilization of lipase have been prepared by the polymerization of a concentrated emulsion precursor. The concentrated emulsion consists of a mixture of styrene and divinyl-benzene containing a suitable surfactant and an initiator as the continuous phase and water as the dispersed phase. The volume fraction of the latter phase was greater than 0.74, which is the volume fraction of the dispersed phase for the most compact arrangement of spheres of equal radius. The lipase from Candida rugosa has been immobilized on the internal surface of the hydrophobic microporous poly(styrene-divinyl benzene) supports and used as biocatalysts for the hydrolysis of triacylglycerides. The effects of the amount of surfactant, of the molar ratio of divinylbenzene/styrene in the continuous phase, and of the aquaphilicity of the supports on the adsorption, activity, and stability of the immobilized lipase have been investigated. The microporous poly(styrene-divinylbenzene) adsorbents constitute excellent supports for lipase because both the amount adsorbed is large and the rate of enzymatic reaction per molecule of lipase is higher for the immobilized enzyme than for the free one. © 1993 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

    Notes: In breast and colon adenocarcinomas methylation patterns at CCGG sites of several loci located on the short arm of chromosome 11 were determined by Southern blot analysis. Results obtained indicate that all tumor samples (20/20) exihibit DNA methylation changes when compared to their normal counterparts. In colon tumors,i-globin gene is usually hypomethylated (9/10), whereas Ha-ras gene, which is located in the same region, retains an unmodified DNA methylation pattern. Hypomethylation of parathyroid hormone (5/10) and catalase genes (4/10) are also frequently detected in colon tumor specimens. For the catalase gene the region around exon is the only one which is affected by these changes. In breast adenocacinoma, modifications of the methylation patterns are less frequently observed. However, hypomethylation of the i-globin gene is a very common event in these tumors (8/10), and it is also detected (2/2) in lobular carcinoma in situ which is an early step in breast tumorgenesis. In addition, hypermethylation of a CpG island is also observed at the locus 17p13.3 in both colon (5/5) and breast (4/9) adenocarcinomas. In the tumoral tissues which containj a limited amount of CpG. Some of these alterations seen, therefore, to be tumor and sequence specific.

    Notes: To study the possibility of the production of branched polypropylene (PP) by a reactive extrusion (REX) route, side chains were introduced on the backbone of a polypropylene material by reacting hexadecylamine with acrylic acid grafted PP. Experiments were carried out both in solution and in the melt, and the products were analyzed by FTIR, elemental analysis, dynamic mechanical, and rheological techniques. Analysis of the FTIR spectra of the samples produced in the solution reactions, at an equal molar ratio of [ -NH2]/[-COOH] without catalyst addition and without removal of the by-product, revealed that the formation of imide was increased with increasing the reaction time up to 10 h, while a further increase in reaction time resulted in a reversal of the reaction. In the REX experiments, FTIR analysis showed that the imide formation increased with the [-NH2]/[-COOH] molar ratio. At a molar ratio of one, more imide was present in the REX product than the in-solution one. Elemental analysis suggested that the nitrogen content in the products initially increased with [-NH2]/[-COOH] molar ratio and then reached an almost constant value at molar ratio values of about unity. The glass transition temperature (Tg) was measured by dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA), and it was found that the attachment of the alkyl chains caused a reduction in Tg of the products. Finally, rheological measurements showed that the shear viscosity of the products increased with the amine/carboxyl molar ratio at low shear rates and that their moduli were enhanced as a result of the attachment of the alkyl side chains.

    Description: The World Urban Database and Access Portal Tools (WUDAPT) is an international community-based initiative to acquire and disseminate climate relevant data on the physical geographies of cities for modeling and analysis purposes. The current lacuna of globally consistent information on cities is a major impediment to urban climate science toward informing and developing climate mitigation and adaptation strategies at urban scales. WUDAPT consists of a database and a portal system; its database is structured into a hierarchy representing different levels of detail, and the data are acquired using innovative protocols that utilize crowdsourcing approaches, Geowiki tools, freely accessible data, and building typology archetypes. The base level of information (L0) consists of local climate zone (LCZ) maps of cities; each LCZ category is associated with a range of values for model-relevant surface descriptors (roughness, impervious surface cover, roof area, building heights, etc.). Levels 1 (L1) and 2 (L2) will provide specific intra-urban values for other relevant descriptors at greater precision, such as data morphological forms, material composition data, and energy usage. This article describes the status of the WUDAPT project and demonstrates its potential value using observations and models. As a community-based project, other researchers are encouraged to participate to help create a global urban database of value to urban climate scientists.

    Description: The Observing System Research and Predictability Experiment (THORPEX) was a 10-yr, international research program organized by the World Meteorological Organization’s World Weather Research Program. THORPEX was motivated by the need to accelerate the rate of improvement in the accuracy of 1-day to 2-week forecasts of high-impact weather for the benefit of society, the economy, and the environment. THORPEX, which took place from 2005 to 2014, was the first major international program focusing on the advancement of global numerical weather prediction systems since the Global Atmospheric Research Program, which took place almost 40 years earlier, from 1967 through 1982. The scientific achievements of THORPEX were accomplished through bringing together scientists from operational centers, research laboratories, and the academic community to collaborate on research that would ultimately advance operational predictive skill. THORPEX included an unprecedented effort to make operational products readily accessible to the broader academic research community, with community efforts focused on problems where challenging science intersected with the potential to accelerate improvements in predictive skill. THORPEX also collaborated with other major programs to identify research areas of mutual interest, such as topics at the intersection of weather and climate. THORPEX research has 1) increased our knowledge of the global-to-regional influences on the initiation, evolution, and predictability of high-impact weather; 2) provided insight into how predictive skill depends on observing strategies and observing systems; 3) improved data assimilation and ensemble forecast systems; 4) advanced knowledge of high-impact weather associated with tropical and polar circulations and their interactions with midlatitude flows; and 5) expanded society’s use of weather information through applied and social science research.

    Description: An overview of Sun–Sky Radiometer Observation Network (SONET) measurements in China is presented. Based on observations at 16 distributed SONET sites in China, atmospheric aerosol parameters are acquired via standardization processes of operational measurement, maintenance, calibration, inversion, and quality control implemented since 2010. A climatology study is performed focusing on total columnar atmospheric aerosol characteristics, including optical (aerosol optical depth, ÅngstrÖm exponent, fine-mode fraction, single-scattering albedo), physical (volume particle size distribution), chemical composition (black carbon; brown carbon; fine-mode scattering component, coarse-mode component; and aerosol water), and radiative properties (aerosol radiative forcing and efficiency). Data analyses show that aerosol optical depth is low in the west but high in the east of China. Aerosol composition also shows significant spatial and temporal variations, leading to noticeable diversities in optical and physical property patterns. In west and north China, aerosols are generally affected by dust particles, while monsoon climate and human activities impose remarkable influences on aerosols in east and south China. Aerosols in China exhibit strong light-scattering capability and result in significant radiative cooling effects.

    Description: Observations are the foundation for understanding the climate system. Yet, currently available land meteorological data are highly fractured into various global, regional, and national holdings for different variables and time scales, from a variety of sources, and in a mixture of formats. Added to this, many data are still inaccessible for analysis and usage. To meet modern scientific and societal demands as well as emerging needs such as the provision of climate services, it is essential that we improve the management and curation of available land-based meteorological holdings. We need a comprehensive global set of data holdings, of known provenance, that is truly integrated both across essential climate variables (ECVs) and across time scales to meet the broad range of stakeholder needs. These holdings must be easily discoverable, made available in accessible formats, and backed up by multitiered user support. The present paper provides a high-level overview, based upon broad community input, of the steps that are required to bring about this integration. The significant challenge is to find a sustained means to realize this vision. This requires a long-term international program. The database that results will transform our collective ability to provide societally relevant research, analysis, and predictions in many weather- and climate-related application areas across much of the globe.

    Description: Trends in Canada’s climate are analyzed using recently updated data to provide a comprehensive view of climate variability and long-term changes over the period of instrumental record. Trends in surface air temperature, precipitation, snow cover, and streamflow indices are examined along with the potential impact of low-frequency variability related to large-scale atmospheric and oceanic oscillations on these trends. The results show that temperature has increased significantly in most regions of Canada over the period 1948–2012, with the largest warming occurring in winter and spring. Precipitation has also increased, especially in the north. Changes in other climate and hydroclimatic variables, including a decrease in the amount of precipitation falling as snow in the south, fewer days with snow cover, an earlier start of the spring high-flow season, and an increase in April streamflow, are consistent with the observed warming and precipitation trends. For the period 1900–2012, there are sufficient temperature and precipitation data for trend analysis for southern Canada (south of 60°N) only. During this period, temperature has increased significantly across the region, precipitation has increased, and the amount of precipitation falling as snow has decreased in many areas south of 55°N. The results also show that modes of low-frequency variability modulate the spatial distribution and strength of the trends; however, they alone cannot explain the observed long-term trends in these climate variables.
