    Description: Gorgonians are a key group of organisms in benthic marine communities with a wide bathymetric and geographical distribution. Although their presence on continental shelves and slopes has been known for more than 100 years, knowledge concerning the ecology of deep gorgonian species is still in a very preliminary stage. To overcome this situation, gorgonian assemblages located at 40–360 m depth were studied over a large geographical area on the continental shelf and upper slope of the Menorca Channel (Western Mediterranean Sea). A quantitative analysis of video transects recorded by a manned submersible and a remotely operated vehicle, were used to examine the diversity, distribution and demography of gorgonian species. Results showed high gorgonian diversity within this depth range (a total of nine species were observed) compared to Mediterranean coastal areas. Gorgonian assemblages on the continental shelf and upper slope were mostly monospecific (respectively 73% and 76% of occupied sampling units contained one single species), whereas shelf edge assemblages were highly multispecific (92% of occupied sampling units contained several species). This contrasts with the monospecificity of Mediterranean coastal gorgonian assemblages. Gorgonian populations on the continental shelf were mostly dominated by small colonies (88% of measured colonies) with few intermediate and large colonies (12% of measured colonies). In deeper areas small colonies were still dominant (60% of measured colonies), but intermediate and large colonies were much more abundant (40% of measured colonies). This suggests high recruitment rates on the continental shelf, but perturbations (trammel nets, long lines and strong storms) may limit the presence of intermediate and large colonies. Conversely, on the shelf edge and upper slope a more stable environment may allow colonies to reach larger dimensions. The identification and ecological characterization of these deep assemblages further extends the current knowledge about Mediterranean gorgonians, and is fundamental in improving the management and conservation of deep benthic ecosystems.

Abstract The Adra River deltaic system, southeast Iberian Peninsula, shows a steep topography and is subjected to strong climatic seasonality. This system has been affected by alternating wet and dry periods, and it has also undergone numerous anthropogenic activities such as deforestation, mining activities, river channel deviations and dam construction, particularly during the last two centuries. Two sediment cores were retrieved off the Adra River, from the western (MS_V9) and eastern (MS_V4) lobes of the subaqueous deltaic deposit. A multi-proxy study was carried out, including grain size, benthic foraminiferal assemblages, magnetic susceptibility and geochemical element analyses, in order to understand the sedimentary expression of recent climatic cycles and anthropogenic interventions in the river basin. Periods of increased deposition of coarse-grained sediments, low absolute abundance of benthic foraminifera and high elemental ratios indicative of terrigenous contributions, were interpreted as periods of increased sediment supply to the shelf. Four flooding events were recorded in core MS_V9 and three events on core MS_V4, of which two were observed in both cores. They were related to periods with major floods that were documented on the southern Iberian Peninsula around 1770–1810 and 1860–1870 AD. On the other hand, sediment core intervals exhibiting increasing proportion of fine-grained sediments and higher abundances of foraminiferal species assigned as successful colonizers (Textularia earlandi) and opportunistic species that feed on bacteria or terrestrial organic matter (Bolivina ordinaria, Bulimina elongata, Eggerelloides scaber and Ammonia beccarii or tepida), indicate the establishment of new environments with new ecological constraints. They were related to significant decreases of terrigenous sediment input during low rainfall or dry periods. The increase of opportunistic species feeding on fresh phytodetritus (Nonionella iridea, Nonionella stella, Nonionella sp., Brizalina dilatata, Epistominella vitrea and Bolivinellina pseudopuntata), under more stable environmental conditions, also point to a stronger marine influence on the prodeltaic environments during these periods. The human interventions on the river basin after 1872 AD, with the deviation of the main river channel to the east, led to a drastic reduction of the sediment exported to the western delta lobe. This study showed that the sedimentation on the Adra subaqueous deltaic deposit was mainly controlled by rainfall variability from 1663 to 1872 AD, and afterwards by anthropogenic interventions.

Abstract: The GEOTRACES Intermediate Data Product 2014 (IDP2014) is the first publicly available data product of the international GEOTRACES programme, and contains data measured and quality controlled before the end of 2013. It consists of two parts: (1) a compilation of digital data for more than 200 trace elements and isotopes (TEIs) as well as classical hydrographic parameters, and (2) the eGEOTRACES Electronic Atlas providing a strongly inter-linked on-line atlas including more than 300 section plots and 90 animated 3D scenes. The IDP2014 covers the Atlantic, Arctic, and Indian oceans, exhibiting highest data density in the Atlantic. The TEI data in the IDP2014 are quality controlled by careful assessment of intercalibration results and multi-laboratory data comparisons at cross-over stations. The digital data are provided in several formats, including ASCII spreadsheet, Excel spreadsheet, netCDF, and Ocean Data View collection. In addition to the actual data values the IDP2014 also contains data quality flags and 1-σ data error values where available. Quality flags and error values are useful for data filtering. Metadata about data originators, analytical methods and original publications related to the data are linked to the data in an easily accessible way. The eGEOTRACES Electronic Atlas is the visual representation of the IDP2014 data providing section plots and a new kind of animated 3D scenes. The basin-wide 3D scenes allow for viewing of data from many cruises at the same time, thereby providing quick overviews of large-scale tracer distributions. In addition, the 3D scenes provide geographical and bathymetric context that is crucial for the interpretation and assessment of observed tracer plumes, as well as for making inferences about controlling processes.

    Description: The semi-arid northeastern (NE) Brazil vegetation is largely dominated by Caatinga, one of the largest and richest dry forests in the world. Caatinga is a strategic biome, since it has borders with Cerrado, Atlantic forests and the Amazon, acting as a potential corridor (or barrier) for biotic interchange between these regions during evolutionary times. Therefore, accurate reconstructions of past vegetation, ecological and hydrological changes in this area are critical to understanding the dynamics of biome boundaries that may play an important role in dispersal and diversification mechanisms and, more specifically, the link between the long-term climate variability and tropical biodiversity. Here, we present high-resolution palynological and elemental data from marine core GeoB16205-4 retrieved off the Parnaíba River mouth (NE Brazil) mainly covering the Younger Dryas (YD). We show that the YD interval was predominantly wet in NE Brazil, yet it was not homogenous and two distinct phases could be distinguished. A marked intensification of wet conditions between ∼12.3 and 11.6 cal kyr BP was recorded by the expansion of tropical rainforest and tree ferns. These results are in agreement with the transient TraCE-21k coupled climate model simulation. We infer that the second pluvial phase of the YD is related to a weak AMOC due to meltwater pulses in the North Atlantic, which forces a southward shift of the Intertropical Convergence Zone and its associated rainfall. Our records provide new evidence on the establishment of an “eastern forest corridor” in the nowadays semi-arid Caatinga allowing for past biotic interchanges of plant species.

    Description: The Southern Ocean is the most important area of anthropogenic carbon (Cant) uptake in the world ocean, only rivalled in importance by the North Atlantic Ocean. Significant variability on decadal time-scales in the uptake of Cant in the Southern Ocean has been observed and modelled, likely with consequences for the interior ocean storage of Cant in the region, and implications for the global carbon budget. Here we use eight cruises between 1973 and 2012 to assess decadal variability in Cant storage rates in the southeast Atlantic sector of the Southern Ocean. For this we employed the extended multiple linear regression (eMLR) method. We relate variability in DIC (dissolved inorganic carbon) storage, which is assumed to equal anthropogenic carbon storage, to changes in ventilation as observed from repeat measurements of transient tracers. Within the Antarctic Intermediate Water (AAIW) layer, which is the dominant transport conduit for Cant into the interior ocean, moderate Cant storage rates were found without any clear temporal trend. In Subantarctic Mode Water (SAMW), a less dense water mass found north of the Subantarctic Front and above AAIW, high storage rates of Cant were observed up to about 2005 but lower rates in more recent times. The transient tracer data suggest a significant speed-up of ventilation in the summer warmed upper part of AAIW between 1998 and 2012, which is consistent with the high storage rate of Cant. A shift of more northern Cant storage to more southern storage in near surface waters was detected in the early 2000s. Beneath the AAIW the eMLR method as applied here did not detect significant storage of Cant. However, the presence of the transient tracer CFC-12 all through the water column suggests that some Cant should be present, but at concentrations not reliably quantifiable. The observed temporal variability in the interior ocean seems at a first glance to be out of phase with observed surface ocean Cant fluxes, but this can be explained by the time delay for the surface ocean signal to manifest itself in the interior of the ocean.

    Description: Marine conglomerates at high elevation on the flanks of ocean islands are usually interpreted as evidence of mega-tsunamis generated by volcano flank collapses, although their origin is sometimes debated (elevated littorals vs. tsunami). In this review, we introduce case studies of well-documented examples of tsunami conglomerates in Hawaii (Pacific Ocean), the Canary and Cape Verde Islands (Atlantic Ocean), and Mauritius Island (Indian Ocean). Other less-documented marine conglomerates are also presented as tsunami candidates. Then, we build a comprehensive picture of the general characteristics of these conglomerates and the different methods that can be applied to date them. Different perspectives of research are proposed, especially on the use of tsunami conglomerates as proxies for better constraining numerical models of ocean island flank collapses and associated tsunamis. We also discuss the possible links between volcano growth, flank instability, and climate.

    Description: The GEOTRACES Intermediate Data Product 2017 (IDP2017) is the second publicly available data product of the international GEOTRACES programme, and contains data measured and quality controlled before the end of 2016. The IDP2017 includes data from the Atlantic, Pacific, Arctic, Southern and Indian oceans, with about twice the data volume of the previous IDP2014. For the first time, the IDP2017 contains data for a large suite of biogeochemical parameters as well as aerosol and rain data characterising atmospheric trace element and isotope (TEI) sources. The TEI data in the IDP2017 are quality controlled by careful assessment of intercalibration results and multi-laboratory data comparisons at crossover stations. The IDP2017 consists of two parts: (1) a compilation of digital data for more than 450 TEIs as well as standard hydrographic parameters, and (2) the eGEOTRACES Electronic Atlas providing an on-line atlas that includes more than 590 section plots and 130 animated 3D scenes. The digital data are provided in several formats, including ASCII, Excel spreadsheet, netCDF, and Ocean Data View collection. Users can download the full data packages or make their own custom selections with a new on-line data extraction service. In addition to the actual data values, the IDP2017 also contains data quality flags and 1-σ data error values where available. Quality flags and error values are useful for data filtering and for statistical analysis. Metadata about data originators, analytical methods and original publications related to the data are linked in an easily accessible way. The eGEOTRACES Electronic Atlas is the visual representation of the IDP2017 as section plots and rotating 3D scenes. The basin-wide 3D scenes combine data from many cruises and provide quick overviews of large-scale tracer distributions. These 3D scenes provide geographical and bathymetric context that is crucial for the interpretation and assessment of tracer plumes near ocean margins or along ridges. The IDP2017 is the result of a truly international effort involving 326 researchers from 22 countries. This publication provides the critical reference for unpublished data, as well as for studies that make use of a large cross-section of data from the IDP2017.

Abstract We reconstruct environmental conditions of the period 53-14 kyr BP in the continental northern Neotropical region. We evaluate in detail the magnitude of climatic fluctuations and their effects on aquatic communities during six Heinrich Stadials (HS1-HS5a), using sediments from Lake Petén Itzá, Guatemala, and a multiproxy approach. In Lake Petén Itzá typical Heinrich Stadials (HSs) are recorded in sediments as alternations of gypsum and clay, and abrupt changes in magnetic susceptibility, CaCO3 and biological compositions. This suggests that HSs were periods of hydrological unbalance, characterized by dry spells, punctuating the predominant humid conditions characterizing the period 53-14 kyr BP. The ultrastructure of HSs allows us to identify four different types of climatic conditions associated to HSs: 1) prevailing dry conditions but changing to humid (HS5, HS3); 2) predominantly humid conditions but changing to arid (HS2); 3) fluctuating humid-dry-humid (HS4, HS1); and 4) arid with high lake water conductivity (HS5a). The continuous presence of tropical ostracode species during HSs suggests that lake water temperatures were not drastically lowered. Ostracode-based transfer functions indicate that during HSs, epilimnetic water temperatures decreased by 1–3 °C compared to mean modern temperatures. Lake solute composition and conductivity were strongly affected by HSs. During HS5a and HS1 we estimate conductivity values 〉 800 μS cm−1. Diversity indices show significant differences (F5,70 = 3.74, p = 0.004) of ostracode species composition among HSs. Highest diversities occurred during HS5a, HS4 and HS1, which display greater climatic alterations than the other HSs. Fluctuating climates seem to have exerted positive effects on diversity of aquatic communities by producing an increase in habitat heterogeneity.

Some of these factors are the production of biofilm, hydrolytic enzymes, toxins, and plasmids; therefore, the interruption of this system could be a useful tool to control plant tissue infections. This review analyzes the potential treatments to interrupt QS and control the infection of plant tissues.

    Description: A joint study and mapping of the morphological features and architecture of the Galicia margin based on high-resolution multibeam bathymetry data and multichannel seismic profiles, provides new insights of the margin morphostructure. Tectonic processes are the major control of the margin's morphology, where the imprint of the North Atlantic rifting and opening and later subduction of the Bay of Biscay and compressional events are still well preserved. The West Galicia margin, which is up to 350 km wide, is composed from east to the west of inner, transitional and outer sectors. The inner sector shows a graded upper slope strongly dissected by a system of submarine canyons and valleys that flow into the 170 km long and 40–60 km wide NW-SE Valle Inclán Valley. The transitional sector, which is up to 75 km wide, displays a smooth relief dominated by landslides and giant craters. Finally, the outer sector is characterised by several banks, N-S sub-parallel ridges and elongated valleys that project seaward over 200 km (i.e., Galicia Bank, Half-Graben, Deep Galicia margin and Peridotite Ridge domains). The North Galicia margin is characterised by a system of terraces up to 30 km wide, that form a stepped slope followed by an abrupt lower slope affected by large-scale rotational failures. The Galicia margin constitutes an exceptional area within the Atlantic margins for identifying different morphostructure styles that characterised the main stages of the margin's evolution along the Wilson cycle. The Galicia margin hosts the transition between two end-members of continental margin styles: a western hyperextended rifted margin (being the conjugate with the Newfoundland margin during the Late Jurassic) and a northern convergent margin (now fossilised) associated with the partial subduction of the southern sector of the Bay of Biscay underneath the North Iberian margin, which occurred in Paleocene-Eocene times. Thus, the morphostructure of the West Galicia margin still reflects the detached fault systems and tilted blocks that resulted from the Mesozoic North Atlantic rifting. Furthermore, the Coruña and Jean Charcot seamounts, which are adjacent to the Galicia margin, correspond to spreading ridges formed by the simultaneous opening of North Atlantic Ocean and the Bay of Biscay in the Upper Cretaceous. The rest of the terraced morphology of the North Galicia margin is derived from extensional faults caused by an overriding of the Iberian plate in relation to the subduction of the Bay of Biscay oceanic crust during Cenozoic times. Since the late Neogene, compressional tectonics resulting from the reorganisation of the Eurasia/Iberia and Africa plates is also reflected on the present-day morphology as the following: (i) an elevation of the Biscay Abyssal Plain up to 150 m over the Iberia Abyssal Plain; (ii) deep-seated landslides associated with an uplift of the Galicia Bank; and (iii) an orientation of submarine canyons along NW-SE strike slip faults.
