Notes: Beam shape coefficients, gnm, are at the core of the generalized Lorenz-Mie theory describing the scattering of a shaped beam by spheres. A decrease in computation times is essential for systematic applications of the theory. This paper introduces a new formulation to compute beam shape coefficients, gnm, in the framework of the localized approximation and discusses symmetry relations between the coefficients. The new formulation permits computation times to be decreased by one to two orders of magnitude.

Notes: This paper is devoted to the description of the interaction between a spherical particle and a laser sheet beam (Gaussian beam focused by a cylindrical lens) by using the generalized Lorenz-Mie theory (GLMT). Comparisons between the scattering properties of laser sheet, Gaussian beam and plane wave are carried out.

Notes: The theory of interaction between a shaped beam and an infinite cylinder arbitrarily located in it is presented. The same approach as for the generalized Lorenz-Mie theory is first used. In particular, variable separability is assumed in solving the wave equation. The special case of Gaussian beams, however, implies that, unexpectedly, a special class of non-separable scalar potentials is required for some kinds of beams.

Notes: The effects of the particle trajectories on phase Doppler measurements were explored numerically using generalized Lorenz-Mie theory. Computations were performed for a commercial phase Doppler system and various schemes for elimination of the trajectory effects were examined. It is shown that these effects cannot be completely suppressed if the ratio of the two measured phase shifts from a single receiving unit is used to validate the measurements. On the other hand, the errors due to particle trajectories can be eliminated satisfactorily by employing an additional receiving unit, which allows one to detect the asymmetry of the scattered light pattern due to displacement of the particle trajectory from the centre of the measuring volume. A preliminary experimental evaluation of this method is presented and discussed.

Notes: Generalized Lorenz-Mie theory for the scattering of arbitrarily shaped beams by spherical particles has been applied to two standard phase Doppler layouts, employing receiving units at 30° and 150° off-axis locations. It is shown that the particle trajectory effects may lead to inaccurate size measurements for the near-forward receiver and may make the near-backward measurements totally misleading when a large particle size range (1:40) needs to be covered. Only limited improvements can be achieved by using two phase-shift signals from a single receiving unit for discrimination. The errors associated with the trajectories are also detrimental to the concentration measurements based on the existing criteria. However, an extended optical system employing two identical receiving units, located symmetrically about the plane of the laser beams, provides a robust solution to the trajectory ambiguity. It can be used to measure correctly the particle size and the particle location in the measuring volume. The difficulties associated with estimating the effective size of the measuring volume as a function of the particle diameter (in order to determine the true size distribution and the particle number density) may also be resolved by employing an extended system. Hence, despite a higher cost, this arrangement is attractive, at least for obtaining some benchmark simultaneous measurements of sizes and velocities in two-phase particulate flows.

Notes: A new-generation velocimeter/sizemeter is described. Size measurement is based on the top-hat beam technique. Velocity measurement is carried out by using laser Doppler velocimetry. Advantages and limitations of the top-hat beam technique are discussed and compared with other techniques (pedestal, visibility, phase Doppler). Bubble diagnosis in a turbulent pipe flow is reported.

Notes: MUSCAT is a Monte Carlo code for numerical simulation of Multiple Scattering. Only the general restrictive assumptions of the steady-state, scalar radiative transfer equation are required, hence the MUSCAT code can deal with a broad field of applications. The algorithm follows the physical phenomena as closely as possible and realistic 3-D problems can be handled without geometric simplifications. Special care has been devoted to the analysis and validation of the pseudo-random generator subroutine. Global validations of the code in 1-D and 2-D geometries have been successfully carried out. An example of application is reported concerning 3-D studies of visibility in foggy weather.

Notes: New three phases composite materials made of glassbeads as filler, water as liquid dispersed phase and polystyrene as matrix were obtained by polymerization of a water in oil emulsion formed by water dispersed in styrene in which glass beads are added. For this purpose glass beads have to be modified by silanization by a coupling agent 3-(Trimethoxysilyl)propylmethacrylate (TPM) or a silane Octadecyltrichlorosilane (ODMS), in order to prevent the wetting of the glass by water. Only low coverage of the glass surface by the coupling agent (0,05% of TPM) are convenient for the preparation cellular materials having good mechanical properties. At higher coverage ratio, strong hydrophobic glass beads are obtained which destabilize the water / styrene emulsion and lead to macroporous products. Study of the rheology of the filled emulsion appears to be the more simple and more sensitive method to determine the level of wettability of the glass bead by the emulsion which is the most significant parameter for the preparation of such three phases composite materials. Composite materials made of glass beads, air and polystyrene are simply obtained by evaporation of water under vacuum.

Description / Table of Contents: Die Reaktion von 4,9-Dioxa-1,12-dodecandiamin (DDDD) mit dem Diglycidylether von Bisphenol A (DGEBA) wurde mittels isothermer und dynamischer Differentialkalorimetrie untersucht.
Notes: The reaction between the diglycidylether of bisphenol A (DGEBA) and 4,9-dioxa-1,12-dodecanediamine (DDDD) has been studied by means of isothermal and dynamic differential scanning calorimetry. The enthalpy of the reaction of an epoxy group with an amino-hydrogen has been determined to be 112 ± 5 kJ/mol. A kinetic model has been validated. It involves two competitive mechanisms: one is catalysed by the hydroxy groups initially present on the epoxy chain or generated during the reaction (activation energy 77 ± 5 kJ/mol), the other is not catalysed with a higher activation energy (103 ± 3 kJ/mol).For each isothermal curing, the kinetics are not modified by gelation. Evaluated from the gel times, the overall activation energy of the reaction is equal to 62 ± 2 kJ/mol.
