Notes: Multi-cavity transfer molding is an important process step in several electronic and photonic technologies. In some applications, uniform filling of the cavities of the mold, or mold balancing, is required. A semi-empirical flow model to predict mold filling patterns was developed. The algorithm is a one-dimensional network flow simulation that uses experimental pressure drop data to determine the volumetric flow rate through the gates and runners. A comprehensive experimental program was undertaken to determine these hydraulic resistances for different flow rates and mold geometries. A theoretical treatment is also described to compute hydraulic resistance from gate geometry. Uniform gate resistances provide unbalanced filling and higher velocities in the cavities. Balanced filling can significantly reduce the molding compound velocity and the flow induced stresses, but imperfect balancing compromises the benefits. Experimental filling patterns were obtained for two sets of gates. The agreement between the model and the experiments was satisfactory, and the discrepancies were attributed to correctable phenomena.

Notes: A new capillary rheometer incorporated in an instrumented transfer molding press has been developed. This rheometer is effective for determining the viscosity characteristics of thermoset molding compounds under both isothermal and typical molding conditions. In examples of the rheometer's utility, the power law indices of two commercial epoxy molding compounds have been determined to be approximately 0.7. Additionally it has been shown that preconditioning typical epoxy compounds at 47 percent relative humidity causes a viscosity decrease of about 40 percent owing to plasticization of the epoxy resin.

Description: The history of the Backscattered Ultraviolet Experiment (BUV) is recounted and related future efforts are discussed. Satellite measurement of backscattered UV radiation will be the major source of long-term global information about total ozone and ozone profiles for the rest of this century. These measurements started with the BUV experiment flown on Nimbus 4 from 1970 to 1977 and are presently being continued with the Solar and Backscattered Ultraviolet/Total Ozone Mapping Spectrometer (SBUV/TOMS) launched on Nimbus 7 in 1978. NOAA's improved version (SBUV/2) is to fly until sometime in the 1990s and NASA plans to fly an SBUV/2 on the Upper Atmosphere Research Satellite in 1989. Differences between these instruments and in the algorithms for deriving ozone amounts from these data sets are discussed.

Description: A theoretical and experimental study was undertaken to determine the feasibility of using the National Transonic Facility's high accuracy Mach number measurement system as part of a closed loop Mach number control system. The theoretical and experimental procedures described are applicable to the engineering design of pressure control systems. The results show that the dynamic response characteristics of the NTF Mach number gage (a Ruska DDR-6000 quartz absolute pressure gage) coupled to a typical length of pressure tubing were only marginally acceptable within a limited range of the facility's total pressure envelope and could not be used in the Mach number control system.

Description: A multielement hot-film sensor has been developed with closely-spaced elements (2.5 mm) in the streamwise direction. In addition to boundary-layer transition detection, the output of these sensors can reveal the locations of boundary-layer separation and reattachment by a 180 deg phase difference in the 0-200-Hz frequency bandwidth between sensor elements on each side of either the separation or reattachment point. This paper describes the features of multielement hot-film sensor arrays and discusses results from their application to a number of low-speed and transonic airfoil tests.

Description: The use of a very long straight entrance slit in an Ebert grating spectrometer with two plane mirrors at the shorter exit slit to increase the energy density is described. This system has been employed in a far ultraviolet rocket spectrometer to provide higher sensitivity than has been achieved previously. The imaging properties and required slit and mirror adjustments are presented. Experimental results are included.

Description: A rocket-borne photometer containing two tilting-filter channels for the measurement of the forbidden OI 6300-A and 5577-A emission lines in the day airglow is described. The results of one flight substantiate the employment of tilting filters to determine accurate corrections for background continuum and provide reliable height profiles of emission intensity down to approximately 90 km. Discussions on the calibration of the instrument and its baffling against sunlight are also presented.
