Notizen: Two sympatric morphs (type A with a vertebral number of 25 and type B with a vertebral number of 24) of striped jack Pseudocaranx dentex (Bloch & Schneider) were analysed genetically. A part of the 16S–rRNA region of mtDNA was amplified with polymerase chain reaction for 24 specimens, and a restriction enzyme fragment polymorphism showed significant differences between the two types. While all specimens sampled in Ogasawara were identified as type B, about 90% of striped jack in Oita were type A and 10% were type B. Although the spawning areas of these two types are still unknown, significant genetic differences between the two sympatric morphs show that recruitment and migration patterns might differ from each other. The current system suggests the possibility that the juveniles of type B in Oita may migrate from the Ogasawara Islands.

Notizen: Basic acoustic properties of five MgO-doped LiNbO3 rectangular parallelpiped specimens, having X-, Y-, and Z-cut planes, with different MgO dopant concentrations ranging from 0 to 13 mol % are investigated by line-focus-beam acoustic microscopy. The investigation is conducted to characterize the optical-use MgO:LiNbO3 crystals and wafers and to establish large-diameter crystal growth conditions. Leaky-surface-acoustic-wave (LSAW) velocities are measured on each crystalline plane of each specimen as a function of the wave propagation direction and are compared with the measured chemical composition ratios of Mg/Li/Nb, densities, and lattice constants. It is shown that, as the dopant concentrations increase in the experimental composition region, the LSAW velocities increase almost linearly for all the surfaces and all the propagation directions. The LSAW velocities are linearly proportional to the lattice constants, but inversely proportional to the densities. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: The phase transformation of graphitelike BN (h-BN) to wurtzite-type high-pressure BN (w-BN) was investigated through shock-recovery techniques under quasihydrodynamic and nonhydrodynamic shock compressions and under various strain conditions. The experimental results support a diffusionless mechanism, by which the hydrodynamic c-axis compression of h-BN is preferred. This mechanism is topologically considered based on the relationship of crystal structures between h-BN and w-BN. The presence of deviatoric stress and strain depresses the yield of w-BN and the development of w-BN (100) relative to (002). © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: A 24 h incubation study was conducted in situ in Manly Dam reservoir, Sydney, Australia. The study aimed to evaluate the relative effectiveness of grazing on phytoplankton by a resident macrozooplankton community, dominated by the cladoceran Ceriodaphnia and some copepods, in comparison with grazing by added, non-resident Daphnia carinata in the absence of the resident macrozooplankton community. Although there was some variability in the measured grazing rates among incubation bottles (volume: 1.28 L), D. carinata with a mean body size of 30.8 μg dry weight were more efficient grazers than the reservoir macrozooplankton community with a mean body size of 2.5 μg dry weight. The weight-specific clearance rate of D. carinata was 2–65 times higher than that of the resident reservoir community for five taxa of reservoir phytoplankton examined. In comparing the evidence from the literature on the limited ability of D. carinata to graze on cyanobacteria, a management strategy using D. carinata for the reduction of phytoplankton biomass may need to be considered separately from one designed to specifically control undesirable taxa, such as the cyanobacteria Microcystis and Anabaena.

Notizen: Abstract— Usually, scatter in fracture toughness values is studied by assuming the employed steel plate to be macroscopically homogeneous in toughness, but it is probable that inhomogeneity contributes to scatter. This paper proposes a method which can discriminate scatter due to inhomogeneity from scatter measured in tests by using small size test pieces, cut out of previously fractured test specimens used for fracture toughness tests. By this method, the observed scatter of Kc(J) in a previous paper by some of the present authors was shown to be affected considerably by inhomogeneity, although the observed scatter was fairly well described by a Weibull distribution analysis.

Notizen: The crystal structure of C60 at liquid helium temperature was examined by the electron diffraction method using an imaging plate and cryo-TEM (transmission electron microscopy). The crystal of C60 was so thin that the electron scattering from this sample was able to be treated kinematically. However, the least-squares fitting among observed and kinematically calculated diffraction intensities resulted in an R-factor of 0.23 for a structure model with only one major orientation. Similar large R-factors are usually reported in the electron crystallography of thin crystals, in which a single perfect structure was assumed as a model structure. By considering structural disorders in the C60 crystal, however, the R-factor could be reduced to 0.12, when a minor crystal in a different orientation and also the f.c.c. (face-centered cubic) component were introduced to the model in addition to the major orientation crystal. Disorder in the crystal might be as important a factor as the dynamical scattering effect to be considered in electron crystallography for analyzing structures of thin crystals.

Notizen: The beam commissioning of the SPring-8 synchrotron was started in December 1996. In the first ten days, the coarse tuning of the pulse magnets for beam injection from the linac, and the excitation pattern of the dipole and the quadrupole magnets, were accomplished during energy ramping of the beam. The acceleration of the beam up to 8 GeV proceeded smoothly. From January to February 1997, the fine-tuning of the synchrotron was continued and the operating parameters of all of the synchrotron equipment were decided.

Notizen: An alkaline serine protease, M-protease, from Bacillus sp. KSM-K16 has been crystallized. Two morphologically different crystal forms were obtained. Crystal data of form 1: space group P212121, a = 47.3, b = 62.5, c = 75.6 Å, V = 2.23 × 105 Å3, Z = 4 and Vm = 2.09 Å3 Da−1. Crystal data of form 2: space group P212121, a = 75.82 (2), b = 57.79 (2), c = 54.19 (1) Å, V = 2.29 (2) × 105 Å3, Z = 4 and Vm = 2.15 Å3 Da−1. The crystal structure of M-protease in form 2 has been solved by molecular replacement using the atomic model of subtilisin Carlsberg (SBC) which is 60% homologous with M-protease, and refined to the crystallographic R-factor of 0.189 for 7004 reflections with Fo/σ(F) 〉 3 between 7 and 2.4 Å resolution. The final model of M-protease contains 1882 protein atoms, two calcium ions and 44 water molecules. The three-dimensional structure of M-protease is essentially similar to other subtilisins of known structure. The 269 Cα positions of M-protease have an r.m.s. difference of 1.06 Å with the corresponding positions of SBC. The crystal data of form 2 are close to those of SBC, though the structure determination of form 2 made it clear that it is not isomorphous to the crystal structure of SBC. The deletions of amino acids occur at the residues 36′ and 160′–163′ compared with SBC (numerals with primes show the numbering for SBC). The deletion of the four residues (160′–163′) may significantly affect the lack of isomorphism between M-protease and SBC.

Notizen: Abstract The polymerization process in a solution was examined by SAXS and cryo-TEM in the case of chemical polymerization of pyrrole in aqueous solution using sodium cellulose sulfonate (SCS) and FeCl3 as oxidizing agents. Observations with SAXS and cryo-TEM indicated the formation of micelle of SCS in SCS + water system. By adding FeCl3 in the solution, large spherical aggregates were formed as revealed by cryo-TEM, which is considered to be a precursor for the polymer spherical particles produced with a constant diameter.
