    Notes: The ELMO Bumpy Torus (EBT) [Plasma Physics and Controlled Nuclear Fusion (IAEA, Vienna, 1975), Vol. II, p. 141] normally has an energetic electron ring in each of its 24 mirror sectors. The original intention of using this hot-electron population was to provide an average local minimum in the magnetic field (through its diamagnetism) to stabilize the simple interchange and flute modes, which otherwise are theoretically inherent in a closed-field-line bumpy torus. To study the confinement properties of a bumpy torus without the influence of hot-electron rings, a water-cooled stainless steel limiter in each mirror sector was extended into the plasma to the ring location; this eliminated the hot-electron ring population. These limiters were aptly named "ring killers.'' Electron temperature, density, space potential, and plasma fluctuations have been measured during the ring killer experiment and are compared to standard EBT operation. The results of these experiments indicate that the hot-electron rings in EBT do enhance the core plasma properties of EBT and do, in fact, reduce plasma fluctuations; however, these improvements are not large in magnitude. These measurements and recent theoretical models suggest that simple interchange/flute modes are stabilized, or fluctuation levels reduced, well before that condition is obtained for average minimum-B stabilization. Several possible mechanisms for this stabilization are discussed.

    Notes: The steady-state nature of the ELMO Bumpy Torus (EBT) [J. Vac. Sci. Technol. 18, 1088 (1982), and references therein] plasma implies that the neutral density at any point inside the plasma volume determines the local particle confinement time. This article describes a Monte Carlo calculation of three-dimensional atomic and molecular neutral density profiles in EBT. The calculation has been done using various models for neutral source points, for launching schemes, for plasma profiles, and for plasma densities and temperatures. Calculated results are compared with experimental observations—principally spectroscopic measurements—both for guidance in normalization and for overall consistency checks. Implications of the predicted neutral profiles for the fast-ion decay measurement of neutral densities are also addressed.

    Notes: Abstract Experiments were designed to expose blue mussels (Mytilus edulis) to contaminated sediment collected from Narragansett Bay, Rhode Island, USA in 1982. Measurements were taken to allow comparisons of the uptake and depuration of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs). In addition, concentration factors in the mussels were calculated separately against the dissolved and particulate phase concentrations and the results from the exposure and control systems were compared. Both PAHs and PCBs were rapidly accumulated by the mussels exposed to the contaminated sediment. After the mussels were transferred to control seawater, individual PAHs were depurated with half-lives ranging from 12 to 30 d. Individual PCBs showed depuration half-lives which ranged from 16 to 46 d. Concentration factors in the mussels calculated against the particulate phase concentrations were very different in the exposure and control systems. Concentration factors calculated using only the dissolved phase concentrations (bioconcentration factors) showed excellent agreement in the two systems, possibly an indication that the dissolved phase was the direct source of the contaminants accumulated by the mussels. The bioconcentration factors for PCBs were higher than those of PAHs when compounds with similar n-octanol/water partition coefficients were compared.

    Notes: Abstract  The Site Characterization and Analysis Penetrometer System (SCAPS) was used to investigate subsurface petroleum contamination at Aberdeen Proving Ground, Maryland. The SCAPS is a rapid site-screening tool developed by the Tri-Services (U.S. Army, Navy, and Air Force) to reduce the cost of installation restoration activities. The system, consisting of a geophysical cone penetrometer fitted with a laser-induced fluorescence petroleum sensor, is capable of simultaneous, real-time delineation of subsurface stratigraphy and petroleum contamination. Onsite processing of the SCAPS data allows three-dimensional visualization of both subsurface stratigraphy and petroleum contaminant distribution. The site investigation described herein successfully identified three distinct areas of subsurface petroleum contamination caused by leaking underground storage tanks containing No. 2 healing oil. The SCAPS petroleum sensor response was verified by obtaining 20 soil samples and performing onsite and conventional laboratory analyses for petroleum contaminants. Verification sample results indicate a strong correlation between the SCAPS fluorescence data and conventional measures of petroleum contamination. This investigation illustrates the capabilities of the SCAPS for rapid site characterization.

    Notes: Abstract Homogenization temperatures and salinity data are presented for fluid inclusions from hydrothermal gangue minerals (quartz and fluorite) associated with porphyry wolframite-molybdenite-arsenopyrite-sphaleritebismuth-chalcopyrite-cassiterite mineralization within the Fire Tower ore zone, Mt Pleasant, New Brunswick. The data indicate that ore mineral precipitation occurred within a temperature range of 260° to 490°C from moderate to high salinity (10–42 wt% NaCl equivalent) aqueous fluids. Two stages of hydrothermal activity characterized by high (〉30 wt% NaCl equivalent) salinity fluids are recognized; one which occurred at relatively high temperature (350°–490°C); and one which took place at lower temperature (180°–250°C). The high salinity, high temperature stage is interpreted to be the result of resurgent boiling. Dilution of these early fluids by convecting meteoric water resulted in low to moderate salinity fluids, which dominate the inclusion population. The low temperature, high salinity fluid inclusions are interpreted to represent late residual fluids derived from boiling which occurred as a result of a change in the pressure regime from dominantly lithostatic to hydrostatic conditions.
