Notizen: Provides definitions of the three concepts in the title and explores their interrelationships. Distinguishes six alienation dimensions - powerlessness; meaninglessness; normlessness; social isolation; cultural estrangement; self-estrangement - and combines them with three kinds of participation: spontaneous, negative, and compensatory. Describes increasing societal complexity from a general systems perspective. Explores the psycho- and sociogenesis of unalienated as well as alienated participation. Increasing societal complexity creates new forms of alienation and participation, but also resistances of groups that feel threatened or left out by an excessively fast rate of change, which in turn threatens macro-societal stability. Those left without the means to participate in the economic or political process tend to be the alienated "negative participants"; they are generally destructive and anti-outgroup as a result of personal experiences or economic deprivation.

Shows how they can indeed be a challenge to sociological thinking. Also considers the emerging "science of complexity", which includes neural networks, artificial intelligence and artificial life, and discusses the methodological drawbacks of second-order cybernetics.

Notizen: Abstract In [3] a particle method is proposed which acts on an infinite grid. Hence, for a numerical application an estimation of the numerically relevant support is necessary. To overcome this difficulty we suggest a finite grid based on Gaussian integration formulas and present numerical results of different test examples.

Notizen: Abstract. Multimedia streams such as audio and video impose tight temporal constraints for their presentation. Often, related multimedia streams, such as audio and video, must be presented in a synchronized way. We introduce a novel scheme to ensure the continuous and synchronous delivery of distributed stored multimedia streams across a communications network. We propose a new protocol for synchronized playback and compute the buffer required to achieve both, the continuity within a single substream and the synchronization between related substreams. The scheme is very general and does not require synchronized clocks. Using a resynchronization protocol based on buffer level control, the scheme is able to cope with server drop-outs and clock drift. The synchronization scheme has been implemented and the paper concludes with our experimental results.
