    Notes: Abstract Caseinate plastics were reinforced with two lignocellulosic fibres, i.e. wood pulp fibre and flax bast fibre by means of kneading and subsequent injection moulding. The tensile modulus increased from 200 MPa for the unfilled plastic to 1200 MPa at 20 wt% fibre addition. Simultaneously, the tensile strength increased from 6 to 30 MPa going from 0 to 20 wt% fibre incorporation. These results indicate a good interaction between the fibres and the mainly hydrophilic caseinate matrix.

    Notes: Abstract The diageotropica (dgt) mutation has been proposed to affect either auxin perception or responsiveness in tomato plants. It has previously been demonstrated that the expression of one member of the Aux/IAA family of auxin-regulated genes is reduced in dgt plants. Here, we report the cloning of ten new members of the tomato Aux/IAA family by PCR amplification based on conserved protein domains. All of the gene family members except one (LeIAA7) are expressed in etiolated tomato seedlings, although they demonstrate tissue specificity (e.g. increased expression in hypocotyls vs. roots) within the seedling. The wild-type auxin-response characteristics of the expression of these tomato LeIAA genes are similar to those previously described for Aux/IAA family members in Arabidopsis. In dgt seedlings, auxin stimulation of gene expression was reduced in only a subset of LeIAA genes (LeIAA5, 8, 10, and 11), with the greatest reduction associated with those genes with the strongest wild-type response to auxin. The remaining LeIAA genes tested exhibited essentially the same induction levels in response to the hormone in both dgt and wild-type hypocotyls. These results confirm that dgt plants can perceive auxin and suggest that a specific step in early auxin signal transduction is disrupted by the dgt mutation.

    Description: This work focuses on the relationship between L–H (or L–I) transitions and MHD activity in the low magnetic shear TJ-II stellarator. It is shown that the presence of a low order rational surface in the plasma edge (gradient) region lowers the threshold density for H-mode access. MHD activity is systematically suppressed near the confinement transition. We apply a causality detection technique (based on the Transfer Entropy) to study the relation between magnetic oscillations and locally measured plasma rotation velocity (related to Zonal Flows). For this purpose, we study a large number of discharges in two magnetic configurations, corresponding to “fast” and “slow” transitions. With the “slow” transitions, the developing Zonal Flow prior to the transition is associated with the gradual reduction of magnetic oscillations. The transition itself is marked by a strong spike of “information transfer” from magnetic to velocity oscillations, suggesting that the magnetic drive may play a role in setting up the final sheared flow responsible for the H-mode transport barrier. Similar observations were made for the “fast” transitions. Thus, it is shown that magnetic oscillations associated with rational surfaces play an important and active role in confinement transitions, so that electromagnetic effects should be included in any complete transition model.

    Description: A technique for detecting the causal relationship between fluctuating signals is used to investigate the relation between flux and gradient in fusion plasmas. Both a resistive pressure gradient driven turbulence model and experimental Langmuir probe data from the TJ-II stellarator are studied. It is found that the maximum influence occurs at a finite time lag (non-instantaneous response) and that quasi-periodicities exist. Furthermore, the model results show very long range radial influences, extending over most of the investigated regions, possibly related to coupling effects associated with plasma self-organization. These results clearly show that transport in fusion plasmas is not local and instantaneous, as is sometimes assumed.

    Description: 〈span〉〈div〉Abstract〈/div〉Middle–late Campanian strata of the Book Cliffs, Utah, USA, archive three clastic wedges of the North American Cordilleran foreland basin east of the Sevier fold and thrust belt. Variations in wedge geometries provide an opportunity to evaluate controls on foreland basin stratigraphic architecture. There is a significant increase in eastward progradation rate from the Lower to Upper Castlegate Sandstone, followed by a decreased progradation rate in the overlying Bluecastle Tongue and Price River Formation. Rapid progradation during deposition of the Upper Castlegate Sandstone has been attributed to increased sediment supply due to either rapid exhumation of the Sevier fold and thrust belt or introduction of a new sediment source. Rapid progradation has also been attributed to a reduction in basin subsidence due to intraforeland Laramide uplifts or a change in the locus of dynamic subsidence. We test these hypotheses by documenting temporal and spatial changes in the detrital zircon U-Pb age spectra attributable to changes in sediment dispersal patterns, changes in orogenic belt configuration, and/or major tectonic episodes. Mixture modeling of relative contributions from potential source areas indicates a mixed contribution of thrust-belt, northern, and southern sources during rapid progradation. The introduction of multiple sources is likely due to a northward propagation of exhumation in the thrust belt coeval with introduction of axially-sourced detritus in the medial–distal foreland basin. The northward propagation of exhumation culminated with exhumation in the Charleston-Nebo Salient and Uinta Uplift north of the Book Cliffs and may point to a common cause for these phenomena. Mixture modeling points to a change to a dominant southern source during slower progradation in the overlying strata. The return to slower progradation is coeval with a decrease in thrust-belt derived detritus and transition to a dominant southern-source contribution. Transition to a dominantly axial fluvial system during this interval is consistent with a northeastward migration of the regional depocenter. Migration of subsidence and exhumation can be attributed to dynamic subsidence and uplift associated with the northeastward subduction of the Conjugate Shatsky Rise oceanic plateau beneath the Book Cliffs area. Rapid progradation observed during deposition of the Upper Castlegate Sandstone was controlled by a combination of increased sediment supply due to increased exhumation in the Sevier thrust belt and introduction of multiple sources.〈/span〉

    Description: Background: Leptospirosis is a zoonotic disease with a worldwide distribution, especially in developing countries such as Malaysia. This study was designed to explore the knowledge, attitudes, beliefs and practices (KABP) toward leptospirosis among the communities in northeastern Malaysia and to determine the sociodemographic factors associated with the KABP toward leptospirosis. A cross-sectional study using a stratified sampling method was conducted among 214 individuals in four locales in northeastern Malaysia. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted among 214 respondents in northeastern Malaysia using a multi-stage stratified random sampling method. The study population was divided into two groups based on geographical locations: urban and rural. All data were entered and analyzed using the IBM Statistics for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 22.0 software for Windows (IBM, Armonk, NY, USA). The continuous variables were presented using mean and standard deviation (SD), whereas the categorical variables were described using frequency and percentage. Multiple logistic regression was performed to determine the associated factors for good KABP toward leptospirosis among the respondents. Results: It was found that 52.8% of respondents had good knowledge, 84.6% had positive attitudes, 59.8% had positive beliefs, and 53.7% had satisfactory practices. There were no significant sociodemographic factors associated with knowledge and practice, except for educational status, which was significant in the attitude and belief domains. Those with higher education exhibited better attitudes (Odds Ratio (OR) 3.329; 95% Coefficient Interval (CI): 1.140, 9.723; p = 0.028) and beliefs (OR 3.748; 95% CI: 1.485, 9.459; p = 0.005). The communities in northeastern Malaysia generally have good knowledge and a high level of positive attitude; however, this attitude cannot be transformed into practice as the number of people with satisfactory practice habits is much lower compared to those with positive attitudes. As for the belief domain, the communities must have positive beliefs to perceive the threat of the disease. Conclusions: Our current health program on preventing leptospirosis is good in creating awareness and a positive attitude among the communities, but is not sufficient in promoting satisfactory practice habits. In conclusion, more attention needs to be paid to promoting satisfactory practice habits among the communities, as they already possess good knowledge and positive attitudes and beliefs.

    Description: 〈span〉〈div〉Abstract〈/div〉Middle Jurassic dinosaur fossils are exceedingly rare, but new discoveries from the Isle of Skye, Scotland, are beginning to fill this gap. We here describe a new dinosaur tracksite found in the Lealt Shale Formation (Bathonian) of the Great Estuarine Group at Rubha nam Brathairean (Brothers' Point) on Skye. The site preserves an abundance of small sauropod manus and pes prints and several isolated and broken medium-to-large tridactyl footprints. The main site occurs on a single horizon of shaley limestone that formed in a lagoonal environment. The sauropod tracks are tentatively assigned to the ichnotaxon 〈span〉Breviparopus〈/span〉 due to the narrow gauge of the trackways, the digital characteristics of the pes, and the ratio of heteropody observed between the manus and the pes. A theropod trackmaker is inferred for some of the tridactyl impressions with several indicative of the ichnotaxon 〈span〉Eubrontes〈/span〉.     Description: Tracking pre-genesis tropical cyclones is important for earlier detection of developing systems as well as targeting potential locations for dropsondes in field experiments. The use of a reference frame moving with the disturbance gives a more accurate depiction of streamlines and closed circulation than the Earth-relative frame. Identification of recirculating regions does not require a choice of reference frame, however, when marked by the Galilean invariant Eulerian Okubo-Weiss (OW) parameter. While the Eulerian OW parameter is generally effective at identifying vortex cores at a given place and a given time, it has its limitations in weak disturbances and in time-dependent flows. Integrating the eigenvalue of the velocity gradient tensor along particle trajectories provides a time-smoothing of the Eulerian OW parameter, and provides earlier detection with fewer false alarms. We refer to this integration along trajectories as the Lagrangian Okubo-Weiss (OW) parameter. When mapped to a horizontal grid it becomes a Lagrangian OW field. The Lagrangian OW field has advantages over the Eulerian OW field in the detail of additional flow structures that it identifies. The Lagrangian OW field shows the Lagrangian boundaries that are present as a disturbance develops from an easterly wave, and a shear sheath that forms when a disturbance becomes self-sustaining, typically at tropical storm strength. Since all of these structures are Lagrangian, they are advected with the flow field, and display the continuous evolution of coherent flow features as the fluid evolves. Examples of the use of the Lagrangian OW field are given for ECMWF forecast data from the 2014 Atlantic hurricane season. All of the Lagrangian coherent structures that can be identified by this field are shown for developing disturbances and mature cyclones. The Lagrangian OW field also shows additional details of vortex mergers, and is used to identify a stable crystal lattice configuration in which vorticity does not aggregate.

    Description: 〈span〉Detrital terrestrial sediments preserved in near-shore marine basins bear distinctive geochemical identifiers that can be used to identify the on-shore sediment sources and sediment routing through time. Santa Barbara Basin (SBB), offshore of southern California, USA, contains a well-known, continuous, high-resolution Holocene flood record that can provide insights into the frequency and changes in on-shore sources across time for such events. Here SBB-adjacent stream bed sediments are characterized using mineralogical, elemental, and radiogenic strontium and neodymium isotopic compositions. Modern and Holocene SBB flood deposits and Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) sediments were similarly analyzed. The Southern Slopes of the Santa Ynez Mountains and Topatopa Mountains account for ∼85% of SBB Holocene flood deposit sediments, as calculated from Sr-Nd isotope mixing models. During the LGM sea level low stand, the Southern Slopes contribution increased (to ≥90%), while relative sediment contribution from Santa Clara River diminished. This loss was likely compensated, however, by increased sediment flux from the Southern Slopes and the Channel Islands.〈/span〉
