    Notes: Gas-phase diffusivities for high boiling point organics in common gases are determined by evaporating a single submicron aerosol droplet of the organic species, while it is suspended in an electric field in the path of a polarized laser beam. The droplet size is measured as a function of time by using Mie theory to determine the size from the light scattering data of intensity versus angle. In addition to diffusivities, the Lennard-Jones molecular interaction potential parameter, ∊ii, and the collision diameter σii, are found, by applying the molecular theory of gases to interpret the evaporation rate data. Results are compared with available empirical and semi-theoretical correlations for diffusivities and Lennard-Jones parameters. The low vapor pressure organics used here are dioctyl phthalate (DOP), dibutyl sebacate (DBS) and dibutyl phthalate (DBP), and the carrier gases are helium, nitrogen and carbon dioxide.

    Notes: This article presents a method for predicting local Nusselt numbers for heat transfer to a stratified gas-liquid flow for turbulent liquid/turbulent gas conditions. A mathematical model based on the analogy between momentum transfer and heat transfer is developed and tested, using heat transfer and fluid mechanics data taken for air/water flow in a 63.5 mm I.D. tube. The fluid mechanics parameters required for the prediction of the heat transfer characteristics are obtained in the manner outlined elsewhere. Liquid phase Nusselt numbers predicted by the analogy are shown to be in agreement with experimental results for large and small amplitude wavy interfacial conditions. The circumferential average gas phase Nusselt numbers are in rough agreement with the Dittus-Boelter equation for single phase flow based on flow through a conduit of irregular shape. There is a tendency for the average gas phase Nusselt numbers to scatter about predicted values because of the effects of splashing and droplet deposition on the tube wall in the vicinity of the gas-liquid interface.

    Notes: The von Karman analogy between heat transfer and momentum transfer in turbulent fluids is shown to apply to heat transfer through wavy liquid films in horizontal, stratified, gas-liquid flow. Nusselt numbers predicted from the analogy are shown to be in good agreement with experimental data for air-water flows involving three-dimensional wavy films and large-amplitude roll waves. The Nusselt numbers encountered with these turbulent water films are found to be in the same range as those associated with condensation of organics in horizontal tubes under stratified flow conditions.

It employs a permeation tube technique for establishing the partial pressure gradient and a detection system based on the absorption of light at 213.8 nm.     Notes: A high-strength, high-ductility, austenitic stainless steel has been evaluated for use in surgical implants by performing in vivo tests in rats, rabbits, dogs, and rhesus monkeys. This stainless steel, a TRIP (TRansformation Induced Plasticity) steel containing about 4% Mo, was compared with two alloys in current clinical use: Type 316L stainless steel and cast Vitallium. Compared with the other two alloys, cast Vitallium generally had higher resistance to corrosion and superior biocompatibility in all animals. The tests in rats and dogs indicated that the corrosion resistances of the TRIP steel and the Type 316L stainless steel were similar and that the tissue reactions caused by these alloys were also similar. However, in rhesus monkeys, the TRIP steel was shown to be susceptible to stress-corrosion cracking and much more susceptible to crevice corrosion than Type 316L stainless steel. Limited tests in rabbits supported the observation that the TRIP steel is susceptible to stress-corrosion cracking. These inconsistencies in the in vivo tests underline the need for a reevaluation of the popular test techniques and of the animals commonly chosen for assessing the suitability of candidate implant materials. The “worst case” results from the rhesus monkey tests were entirely consistent with previous results obtained from in vitro studies. However, further work must be performed before the behavior of metals in humans, rhesus monkeys, or any other animal, can be predicted with confidence from an in vitro test program.

In Filmen und unter Vakuum werden Copolymere mit hohem Acrylatgehalt unlöslich und der Grad der Vernetzung und Kettenspaltung kann mit Hilfe der Charlesby-Pinnerschen Gleichung in Anlehnung an die Ergebnisse von Untersuchungen der Sol-Gel Verteilung berechnet werden. Bei geringem Acrylatgehalt bleiben die Polymeren löslich, die Kettenspaltung überwiegt und kann über die Veränderungen im Zahlenmittel des Molekulargewichts gemessen werden. Charakteristische Unterschiede im Ablauf der Kettenspaltung unter den vier verschiedenen Versuchsbedingungen können erklärt werden: physikalisch durch solche Faktoren wie Lage der Glasübergangstemperaturen und Radikalrekombination im „Käfig“ und chemisch als Folge der alternativen Reaktionen, welche die primären Radikale eingehen können.
    Notes: The photolysis of copolymers of methyl acrylate and methyl methacrylate, covering the entire composition range, is studied with the copolymers in the form of film and in solution, under vacuum and in an atmosphere of oxygen. In film under vacuum, copolymers with high acrylate contents become insoluble, and cross-linking and chain scission may be separated by application of the Charlesby-Pinner equation to sol-gel separation data. Otherwise, the polymer remains soluble, chain scission predominates and may be measured by the changes in number average molecular weight. Differences in the characteristics of chain scission under the four sets of conditions are accounted for in terms of physical factors, such as glass transition temperatures and “cage” recombination of radicals, and chemically in terms of the alternative reactions available to the primary radicals involved.

    Notes: ---The need for two-dimensional gas chromatography is justified by the extent of peak overlap in one-dimensional gas chromatograms (GCs) of complex mixtures. Such overlap was predicted long ago by statistical-overlap theory (SOT). In this paper, SOT is conceptually reviewed and its predictions are shown to be quantitatively accurate. GCs of complex mixtures of polychlorinated biphenyls, pyridine- and nitrogen-containing polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons, tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans, fatty acid methyl esters, flavors and fragrances, and naphtha were simulated by commercial GC software on DB-1, DB-5, and Stabilwax stationary phases. The numbers of peak maxima in the GCs agreed with predictions of SOT, when the interval of time between successive peaks of pure compounds was described by Poisson statistics. This agreement was realized even though the time intervals actually are deterministic, not statistical. In addition, the numbers of mixture components were predicted with accuracy by regression of peak numbers against SOT. Similar regressions have been reported before, but the theory used here is more sophisticated and its predictions consequently are more accurate. Future directions for finalizing SOT are suggested.

    Notes: A study has been made on the effect of thiols and disulfides on lowering the molecular weight of polysulfide polymers. It was shown that in the presence of aqueous sodium disulfide there is an interchange of chain segments. This effect is observable if a simple organic disulfide is present in the system, resulting in a lower molecular weight. Co-polymers can be prepared by heating together in the presence of sodium disulfide, aqueous dispersions of two different polysulfide polymers. When thiols are present in the system, interchange of disulfide groups occurs in the absence of sodium disulfide. The results show that disulfide/disulfide redistribution and thiol/disulfide interchange take place in polysulfide polymers. The occurrence of these same reactions has recently been recognized by workers in the biochemical field. A literature survey of thiol/disulfide reactions showed that results formerly attributed to oxidation/reduction reactions could be also explained by an interchange mechanism.
