    Notes: Cross-sectional and plan-view transmission electron micrograph analysis of the structure of porous silicon reveals that the pore walls are also porous, yielding a large distribution of pore sizes for a given porous silicon sample. This infrastructure appears to be a universal morphological feature of porous silicon, independent of formation conditions and doping. It is proposed that the observed microstructure explains the recently reported results of adsorption isotherm experiments.

    Notes: The problem of currents and magnetic fields arising from a conducting sheet perforated with a distribution of holes for current-access magnetic bubble memories is investigated using a multiple-scattering formalism. The case of two circular holes is examined in detail. The results suggest that currents and fields for more complicated arrays of noncircular holes can be calculated reliably by a superposition of isolated hole solutions, ignoring the presence of all but extremely close neighboring holes.

    Notes: Body energy partitioning was examined for field-caught, adult walleye pollock; additional laboratory studies were conducted on fish held under controlled temperature conditions at Seward, Alaska.Average consumption for pollock feeding daily was 0.5% of body weight (3100 cal) at 5°C, resulting in an average growth of 0.12% body weight day−1. These results suggest that large pollock grow at similar rates and have similar food conversion efficiencies to those of Atlantic cod held at similar temperatures.Resting metabolic rates measured on adult fish were combined with similar data from juveniles to calculate a regression of specific metabolic rate against wet weight: y= 173x−026. Maintenance rations amounted to 4.8 cal g−1 day−1 at 5°C, very close to the 0.28% value for juveniles. Estimation of metabolic rate using maintenance ration data resulted in values that were 55% higher than those obtained from oxygen consumption data for unfed fish. Weight loss during starvation was 0.18% of body weight day−1 at 5°C, corresponding roughly to a starvation metabolic rate 50% lower than the resting metabolic rate we report.We estimate that an adult pollock will lose about 37% of its prespawning body weight and about 46% of its body energy during spawning. These losses result, primarily, from changes in the weight of gonad, liver and somatic tissues as opposed to changes in specific energy content of those tissues.

    Notes: Abstract We consider the estimation of the parameters of the three-parameter Weibull distribution, with particular emphasis on the unknown endpoint of the distribution. We summarize recent results on the asymptotic behaviour of maximum likelihood estimators. We continue with an example in which maximum likelihood and Bayesian estimators arc compared. We conclude that there are practical advantages to the Bayesian approach, but the study also suggests ways in which the maximum likelihood analysis may be improved.

    Notes: Abstract. Orthopaedic wear debris induces release of bone-resorbing factors from macrophages and fibroblasts. However, the extent to which elemental metallic particles induce bone cells to express factors contributing to implant loosening remains unclear. This study showed that exposure of MG-63 osteoblast-like cells to titanium particles at a concentration of 0.30% v/v resulted in a 15-fold increase in IL-6 release into the culture medium after 24 hours, when compared with cells without particles. Northern blots revealed that exposure of MG-63 cells to titanium particles at a concentration of 0.30% v/v for 24 hours increased IL-6 mRNA signal levels by 9.6-fold, when compared with control cultures. Pretreatment of MG-63 cells with cytochalasin B prevented the particle-induced increase of IL-6 expression but did not alter the basal level of IL-6 release from cells cultured in the absence of particles. The protein kinase C inhibitor, H7, and the serine/threonine kinase inhibitor, genistein, abolished the particle-induced increase in IL-6 release at a concentration of 100 μM for each compound. In contrast, an inhibitor of protein kinase A, HA1004, had no effect on the particle-induced increase in IL-6 release. The transcription factors, nuclear factor IL-6 and nuclear factor kappa B, translocated into the nucleus within 1 hour of particle exposure. This study showed that osteoblast-like cells respond to titanium particles through increased expression of the proinflammatory cytokine, IL-6, in a process requiring phagocytosis and intracellular signaling pathways. These results suggest that osteoblasts play a direct role in implant loosening because of localized release of soluble mediators such as interleukin-6.

    Notes: Summary Although β-Blockers are structurally closely related, there are marked differences in the extent of metabolism, related mainly to relative lipophilicity. Lipophilic β-Blockers are metabolized by C-oxidative pathways and glucuronidation. Metabolism of lipophilic β-Blockers is important in determining pharmacokinetics, formation of active metabolites, stereoselectivity and isomer preference, and interphenotypic variation. The oxidative clearance of metoprolol, timolol and bufuralol is regulated/influenced by the debrisoquine hydroxylation gene locus. The metabolism of these lipophilic β-Blockers thus exhibits polymorphic characteristics, there being significant interphenotype differences in pharmacokinetics (bioavailability, peak plasma level, plasma terminal t1/2) between the poor and extensive metabolizers of debrisoquine. There are similar interphenotype differences in β-blocker pharmacodynamics in terms of β-blockade. A number of adverse effects of lipophilic β-Blockers have been hypothesized to predominate in the poor metabolizer phenotype including unacceptable bradycardia, loss of cardioselectivity, greater CNS side-effects, and interactions with drugs metabolized by the same polymorphic systems. However, objective evidence for this is lacking.
