Notes: Abstract Perovskite (CaTiO3) has been exposed to hydrothermal chemical attack in aqueous solution. Dependences on temperature (150 to 250°C) and on duration of attack (1 to 35 days) have been investigated. It was found that a precipitate surface layer was formed. The thickness of this layer ranged from a few monolayers to several hundred nanometres for the least and the most severe hydrothermal conditions, respectively. The composition of the layer, as deduced by surface analytical techniques, suggests that (i) there is congruent dissolution of the perov skite surface, (ii) a TiO2 precipitate layer is formed, and (iii) the presence of silica and CO2 in solution do not appear to affect substantially the mechanism or the rate of dissolution.

Notes: Abstract Structural properties such as flexural moduli and strength have been measured for a range of porous alumina specimens of different initial powder sizes and final porosities, sintered using the capsule-free hot isostatic pressing method. This processing method produces a porous body in which the closed porosity is negligible. The relationship of these structural properties to total porosity has been investigated. The results indicate that both a power and an exponential function could adequately describe the porosity dependence of flexural strength. The strength values obtained were test method dependent, and were significantly lower for specimens with sintering aids. A power law model based on a critical porosity, as proposed by Phani, gave the best fit for the modulus measurement data. No dependence of mechanical properties on particle size was observed. The strength measurement results did not appear to support suggestions that better strength could be obtained by the capsule-free hot isostatic pressing method than conventional sintering, as reported elsewhere.

Notes: Abstract This investigation is concerned with the deformations and stresses in a slab of all-around infinite extent containing a traction-free plane crack, under conditions of plane strain. The analysis is carried out within the framework of the fully nonlinear equilibrium theory of homogeneous and isotropic incompressible elastic solids. For a fairly wide class of such materials and general loading conditions at infinity, assymptotic estimates appropriate to the various field quantities near the crack-tips are deduced. For a subclass of the materials considered, these results — in contrast to the analogous predictions of the linearized theory — lead to the conclusion that the crack opens up in the neighborhood of its tips even if the applied loading is antisymmetric about the plane of the crack, (e.g., Mode II loading). It is shown further that the non-linear global crack problem corresponding to such a loading in general cannot admit an antisymmetric solution.

Notes: A model of a granular bed is used to obtain an estimate of the speed of propagation of intergranular stress waves. In the analysis, a simple elastic contact between neighboring grains is assumed. The model may be extended to include more complex Intergranular interaction mechanisms, but at the expense of such a simple analytical solution as that obtained here. The predicted dependence of compression of a granular bed on compressive load is compared with experimental measurements and is found to describe the relationship very well. The simplified analysis gives a general insight into the dependency of wave speed on bed geometry, indicating for example that while wave speed is independent of grain size, it does depend on the Initial porosity of the bed.

Notes: A new finite difference scheme for the convection-diffusion equation with variable coefficients is proposed. The difference scheme is defined on a single square cell of size 2h over a 9-point stencil and has a truncation error of order h4. The resulting system of equations can be solved by iterative methods. Numerical results of some test problems are given.

Notes: Poly(Vinyl chloride) is the basic material for a huge number of products which are fabricated using very many different techniques. Established processing techniques continue to be improved, leading to additional benefits in process efficiency and product quality. New processes are also being introduced which are intended to increase the efficiency of material usage and to open up new application areas. These include: molecular orientation, foaming, and cross-linking. Developments are also occurring in the use of PVC in conjunction with other materials as micro- or macro-composites. Processing techniques include coextrusion and lamination. Many processing methods are likely to benefit from the microelectronics revolution in process control and monitoring.

Notes: The apparatus described in DIN 4842 was used to measure the heat transmission of a series of Nomex, polyester-cotton, Proban®-Treated cotton, untreated cotton and wool workwear fabrics subjected to a radiant heat source. Heat transmission was found to be dependent on the incident heat flux, fabric weight and fabric thickness. At the heat flux levels tested, 10 KJ m-2s-1 and 20 KJ m-2s-1, heat transmission was found to be largely independent of the fibre composition of the fabric when single layers of fabric were tested. The level of heat transmission was reduced by the use of multiplayer assemblies or a reflective aluminium coating, but the greatest reduction was obtained when air spaces were interposed between the fabrics. Conbinaitons of fabrics were developed which transmitted less than 205 KJ m-2s-1 during testing at incident heat flux levels of 10 KJ m-2s-1 and 20 KJ m-2s-1.

Notes: Difficulties encountered in bulk transportation of red phosphorus can be overcome by making an intimate blend with alumina trihydrate. The blend is suitable for direct use with more alumina hydrate in a synertistic flame retardant system for epoxy resin mouldings. The degree of observed synergism allows low loadings of the addivities and consequently the electrical and physical properties of the mouldings are only slightly affected.
