Notes: The compositions of biotite and muscovite were examined in terms of the paragenesis and the metamorphic grade in low- to medium-grade pelitic rocks of the Ryoke metamorphism in the Yanai district, southwest Japan. The biotite and muscovite that coexist with K-feldspar have a higher K component in an A′KF diagram than those in rocks lacking K-feldspar. This fact reflects an increase in the K2O content in muscovite, but in biotite it reflects an increase of not only the K2O content but also of the octahedral vacancy. At higher metamorphic grade beyond the cordierite isograd, where cordierite coexists with neither chlorite nor K-feldspar, the biotite shows an increase in illite, K Aliv □xii−1 Si−1, and Tschermak components, Alvi Aliv R+−1 Si−1, where □xii and R+ denote the interlayer vacancy and (Fe+Mg+Mn), respectively. A reaction to define the cordierite isograd is proposed by treating this chemical change as being responsible for the first appearance of cordierite, i.e. K,Al-poor biotite+phengitic muscovite=K,Al-rich biotite+cordierite+quartz+water .By treating this as a key reaction in medium-grade metamorphism, a set of reaction in a progressive metamorphism is established for the Ryoke metamorphism, a typical low-pressure type metamorphism. Some textures in one of the high-grade areas, the K-feldspar-cordierite zone, suggest that a further two prograde reactions have taken place, i.e. andalusite+biotite+quartz=cordierite+K-feldspar+waterand  andalusite=sillimanite.quartz=cordierite+K-feldspar+waterThis implies that this zone probably has a P–T  path involving isobaric heating.

Notes: We have developed hydrogenated microcrystalline silicon germanium, which exhibits a red-shifted absorption spectrum relative to hydrogenated microcrystalline silicon, as a candidate material for the bottom cell of amorphous silicon-based tandem solar cells. Optical absorption, x-ray diffraction, and Raman scattering spectra are presented in addition to optoelectronic properties and light-induced changes. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Nanometer scale recording bits were stably fabricated in polyimide (PI) Langmuir–Blodgett (LB) films on atomically flat Au (111) surfaces using an atomic force microscope (AFM). The bits are written by voltage application through the AFM probe only until the conductance increases. This method eliminates the influence of the variation in the transition time and therefore the degradation of the tip of the probe. 1 Mbit stable writing can be realized. The overall error rate is less than 2×10−3. The results show that an AFM based memory system with PI LB films is a hopeful candidate to realize a scanning probe microscope based memory system. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: This work was undertaken to determine the growth parameters of Lockhart’s equation for finding which component was predominantly contributing to the cell expansion rates of plants subjected to environmental stresses under tissue-culture conditions. Embryos isolated from soybean (Glycine max [L.] Merr.) and kidney bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) seeds were grown under tissue-culture conditions. The water potential of culture media ranged from − 0·02 to − 0·94 MPa so that nutrient deficiency and salt stress conditions could be applied. Additionally, the temperature of culture conditions was set from 10 to 40 °C to apply low-temperature and high-temperature stresses on plants grown at the optimum concentration of culture medium. Cell expansion could be inhibited completely by adding 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid and benzylaminopurine to culture media to form callus tissue. The sizes of the water potential gradient between the water source and elongating cells correlated with the speed of growth rates under nutrient deficiency, salt stress, growth retardation induced by plant hormones, low-temperature and high-temperature conditions in the present study, indicating that cell expansion rates were mainly associated with how much water could be absorbed by elongating cells regardless of the kinds of environmental stress conditions applied.

Notes: Ceramic (Si3 N4 /SiC) composites have been produced by sintering. From the sintered block, three point bend specimens were cut out. A semi-circular crack was made on the centre of the tension surface of the test specimen with the aid of a Vicker’s indenter. The diameter of the semi-circular crack was about 60–70 μm. The specimens were subsequently heat treated at 1300°C for 1 h in vacuum, nitrogen or air. The bending strength was measured at room temperature, 800 and 1000°C. The specimens heat treated in air recovered considerably their bending strength at 1000°C, several specimens failed at a location different from the healed crack and their average strength showed the same value of that for smooth specimens. From these results, it is concluded that the recovery in bending strength of a cracked specimen was caused by crack healing.

Notes: [Auszug] Bombardment was performed as follows. The cleaved specimen was annealed for 60 min. at elevated temperature in vacuo and then bombarded with electrons for 15 min. at the same temperature. The bombarding voltage and current density were 18 kV. and 80 (jiamp./cm.2 respectively. Figs, la and b show ...

Notes: The formation of colloidal crystals by charged colloidal particles in dispersion at a low ionic strength has been interpreted by the DLVO theory that assumes the electrostatic repulsion between particles to be a dominant factor. However, several recent observations can not be interpreted by the DLVO theory, one of which is our finding obtained by the ultra-small-angle X-ray scattering (USAXS) technique, i.e., the effect of added salt concentration on the interparticle distance in colloidal crystals. We obtained interesting and significant information by the ultra-smallangle scattering techniques on the interparticle interaction, which support the existence of a novel factor.

Notes: The structure of a high ionic conductor Rb〈sub〉4〈/sub〉Cu〈sub〉16〈/sub〉I〈sub〉7.2〈/sub〉Cl〈sub〉12.8〈/sub〉 at low temperature has been reinvestigated by use of angle-dispersive neutron powder diffraction. All the diffraction data have been analyzed with integrated software REMEDY consisting of RIETAN-2000 for whole-pattern fitting and MEED for calculating densities of electrons or atomic nuclei by the maximum-entropy method. The resulting nuclear-density maps have reconfirmed that Cu1-Cu2 chains are the main conduction pathways in this material, as previously suggested from the Rietveld analysis of neutron powder diffraction data
