Notizen: In this paper, we have proved in theory that the sign of the current stiffness matrix provides a correct indicator for determining the sign of the loading parameter in the arc-length algorithm before the first bifurcation point is encountered, but may not be the case thereafter. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Notizen: In the computational simulation of fluid flow and scalar transport, multigrid iterative solution techniques often fail or stall when the discrete linearized equations have strongly anisotropic coefficients. In the present work, an adaptive agglomeration algorithm for forming coarse grids is presented that allows multigrid techniques to work efficiently for equation sets with anisotropic coefficients. The adaptive agglomeration is defined by two rules and several guidelines that follow from a physical interpretation of the performance of iterative solvers like Gauss-Seidel. The effectiveness of the adaptive agglomeration algorithm is demonstrated for a wide range of test cases. © 1997 by John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Notizen: A combination of both GMRES and multi-grid (MG) methods is presented in this paper for solving large-scale two- and three-dimensional elasto-plastic problems, in which each MG iteration cycle serves as the preconditioning step for the GMRES procedure. A particular multi-grid approach, termed the Galerkin multi-grid scheme, is considered and the main effort is devoted to the implementation aspects of the proposed algorithm. Numerical examples, characterised by large-scale (up to 82145 DOF), strong non-linearity (nearly plastic limit state, necking and localization) and severe ill-conditioned states (presence of loading limit points), and also involving symmetric and unsymmetric as well as SPD and indefinite system matrices, are provided. The numerical results illustrate that the proposed method exhibits a remarkable performance in terms of efficiency and robustness in all circumstances. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Notizen: This study investigates the numerical solution of the Laplace and biharmonic equations subjected to noisy boundary data. Since both equations are linear, they are numerically discretized using the Boundary Element Method (BEM), which does not use any solution domain discretization, to reduce the problem to solving a system of linear algebraic equations for the unspecified boundary values. It is shown that when noisy, lower-order derivatives are prescribed on the boundary, then a direct approach, e.g. Gaussian elimination, for solving the resulting discretized system of linear equations produces an unstable, i.e. unbounded and highly oscillatory, numerical solution for the unspecified higher-order boundary derivatives data. In order to overcome this difficulty, and produce a stable solution of the resulting system of linear equations, the singular value decomposition approach (SVD), truncated at an optimal level given by the L-curve method, is employed. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Notizen: A finite element model of dendritic solidification of multicomponent alloys is presented that includes solutal convection and is an extension of a previously developed model for solidification of binary alloys. The model is applied to simulation of the solidification of ternary and quaternary Ni-based alloys. The role of solutal convection in the macrosegregation and the formation of freckles is analysed. Calculations show the effects of geometry and material properties on the convection patterns and the attendant segregation. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Notizen: This article establishes the existence of a trapped-mode solution to a linearized water-wave problem. The fluid occupies a symmetric horizontal channel that is uniform everywhere apart from a confined region which either contains a thin vertical plate spanning the depth of the channel or has indentations in the channel walls; the forces of gravity and surface tension are operative. A trapped mode corresponds to an eigenvalue of the composition of an inverse differential operator and a Neumann-Dirichlet operator for an elliptic boundary-value problem in the fluid domain. The existence of such an eigenvalue is established by extending previous results dealing with the case when surface tension is absent. © 1998 B.G. Teubner Stuttgart-John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Notizen: Approximate solutions of the non-linear Boltzmann equation, which have the structure of the linear combination of three global Maxwellians with arbitrary hydrodynamical parameters, are considered. Some sufficient conditions which allow the error between the left- and the right-hand sides of the equation tend to zero, and which are calculated either in the mixed metric or in the pure integral metric, are obtained. The class of the distributions, which minimized this error for the arbitrary Knudsen number, is found. © 1998 B. G. Teubner Stuttgart - John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Notizen: We investigate an initial-value problem modelling fragmentation processes where particles split into two or more pieces at a rate, γ, that not only depends on the sizes of the particles involved but also on time. The existence of non-negative, mass-conserving solutions is established by considering a truncated version of an associated non-autonomous abstract Cauchy problem. The latter has solutions of the form u(t)=Un(t,t0)f, t≥t0, where f is the known data at some fixed time t0≥0 and {Un(t,s)}t0≤s≤t≤T is a uniformly continuous evolution system. A limit evolution system {U(t,s)}t0≤s≤t≤T is shown to exist. Depending on the form of the known data f at time t0, the scalar-valued function u, obtained from the limit evolution system via u(x, t)=[U(t, t0)f](x) for a.e. x〉0, t≥t0, is a solution of either the original initial-value problem or an integral version of this problem. © 1997 B. Notizen: The theory of high-frequency waves has been used to calculate first and second-order asymptotic solutions for the propagation of non-linear waves in a cylindrical symmetric flow of an electron plasma. The behaviour of acceleration waves and weak shock waves has been analysed through these solutions and Whitham's rule for a weak shock wave on any wavelet has been confirmed through the first-order solution. The appearance of a weak shock wave on any wavelet has been determined and its strength, the location, and the speed of propagation have been found from the asymptotic solution presented in this paper. © 1997 by B. Notizen: This short article discusses the spectrum of the Neumann Laplacian in the infinite domain Ω⊂∝n, n ≥2 created by inserting a compact obstacle P into the uniform cylinder Ω0 =(-∞, ∞)×Ω′. The main result is the existence of at least one embedded eigenvalue when P is an (n -2)-dimensional surface whose unit normal is parallel to Ω′ at each point of P . The special case when P is symmetric about {0}×Ω′ is also treated. It is shown that there is at least one symmetric eigenvector and, when P is sufficiently long, at least one antisymmetric eigenvector. © 1998 B. G. Teubner Stuttgart-John Wiley & Sons Ltd.
