    Description: Cytokines such as interleukin-6 induce tyrosine and serine phosphorylation of Stat3 that results in activation of Stat3-responsive genes. We provide evidence that Stat3 is present in the mitochondria of cultured cells and primary tissues, including the liver and heart. In Stat3(-/-) cells, the activities of complexes I and II of the electron transport chain (ETC) were significantly decreased. We identified Stat3 mutants that selectively restored the protein's function as a transcription factor or its functions within the ETC. In mice that do not express Stat3 in the heart, there were also selective defects in the activities of complexes I and II of the ETC.     Description: Corrosion behaviors of pure Cu and Cu-Ni-Zn alloy were investigated in 3.5% NaCl solution and artificial seawater by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and potentiodynamic polarization technologies, and the corrosion morphologies were observed by field emission scanning electron microscopy. The results revealed that Cu-Ni-Zn alloy possessed better corrosion resistance than that of pure Cu in both 3.5% NaCl solution and artificial seawater. The corrosion morphology displayed the corrosion product films on Cu-Ni-Zn alloy were more compact and uniform than that on the pure Cu in both 3.5% NaCl and artificial seawater media.

    Description: Grain boundary character distribution (GBCD) of solution heat treated 2024 Al alloy was analyzed by electron backscattered diffraction, and intergranular corrosion (IGC) susceptibility and corrosion weight loss of the 2024 Al were investigated according to ASTM G110-92. The grain boundaries are composed of 12.17% low angle (∑1) boundaries, 10.87% low coincidence site lattice (∑3-∑29) boundaries and 76.96% random (R) boundaries. After corrosion for 6 h, the corroded boundary proportions of ∑1, ∑3, ∑5-∑29 and R boundaries were 10.71%, 11.11%, 21.95% and 25.14%, respectively. This shows that the GBCD has a great effect on IGC susceptibility of the solution treated 2024 Al, and both ∑1 and ∑3 boundaries exhibit much higher IGC resistance than ∑5-∑29 and R boundaries. Among all the boundaries, the R boundaries have the highest IGC susceptibility.

    Description: We investigate the ionization dynamics of Argon atoms irradiated by an ultrashort intense laser of a wavelength up to 3100 nm, addressing the momentum distribution of the photoelectrons with near-zero-energy. We find a surprising accumulation in the momentum distribution corresponding to meV energy and a “V”-like structure at the slightly larger transverse momenta. Semiclassical simulations indicate the crucial role of the Coulomb attraction between the escaping electron and the remaining ion at an extremely large distance. Tracing back classical trajectories, we find the tunneling electrons born in a certain window of the field phase and transverse velocity are responsible for the striking accumulation. Our theoretical results are consistent with recent meV-resolved high-precision measurements. Scientific Reports 5 doi: 10.1038/srep11473

    Description: The activation of NF-B has emerged as an important mechanism for the modulation of the response to DNA double-strand breaks (DSBs). The concomitant SUMOylation and phosphorylation of IKK by PIASy and ATM, respectively, is a key event in this mechanism. However, the mechanism through which mammalian cells are able to accomplish these IKK modifications in a timely and lesion-specific manner remains unclear. In this study, we demonstrate that LRP16 constitutively interacts with PARP1 and IKK. This interaction is essential for efficient interactions among PARP1, IKK, and PIASy, the modifications of IKK, and the activation of NF-B following DSB induction. The regulation of LRP16 in NF-B activation is dependent on the DSB-specific sensors Ku70/Ku80. These data strongly suggest that LRP16, through its constitutive interactions with PARP1 and IKK, functions to facilitate the lesion-specific recruitment of PARP1 and IKK and, ultimately, the concomitant recruitment of PIASy to IKK in response to DSB damage. Therefore, the study has provided important new mechanistic insights concerning DSB-induced NF-B activation.

    Description: The hydrocarbon source rock potential of shales from the Oligocene–Early Miocene Dingqinghu Formation was evaluated using organic geochemistry (Rock-Eval pyrolysis, total organic carbon (TOC) and bitumen extraction) and organic petrology. Forty-one outcrop samples from Lunbori and Jiangria Co shales in the Lunpola Basin were analysed. At Lunbori, in the central part of the basin, the shales have very good source rock potential, and show TOC contents ranging from 3.72 to 11.2 wt%, with an average TOC value of 7.36 wt%, S 2 values of 33.4 – 99.5 mg HC/g rock (average 61.8 mg HC/g rock), and extractable organic matter contents varying from 513 to 4525 ppm (average 2105 ppm). The shales have very good source rock potential. Rock-Eval T max values of 433 – 437°C (average 435°C) and high carbon preference index (CPI) values (4.76 – 6.70) indicate that the organic matter is immature to early mature for oil generation. The yellow fluorescence of kerogen under UV light is in good agreement with T max and CPI data. High hydrogen indices (HI) (635 – 1057 mg HC/g TOC) and H/C ratios (1.60 – 1.72) indicate that the Lunbori shales contain oil-prone organic matter and are characterized by high yellow fluorescing amorphous sapropelite content. The Lunbori shales contain a high content of hydrogen-rich Type II and minor Type I oil-prone kerogen, and have dominant medium to long molecular weight n -alkanes (maximizing at C 25 or C 27 ) with marked odd carbon number preference in the n -C 23 – n -C 31 range, pristine/phytane (Pr/Ph) ratios of 0.06 – 0.14, high phytane/ n -C 18 ratios (10.95 – 30.63), abundant gammacerane (gammacerane/C 31 hopane: 0.44 – 1.80), and predominant regular sterane C 27 . These data indicate deposition in stratified, anoxic and saline depositional conditions with a kerogen predominatly formed from a lacustrine biota. The Jiangria Co shales in the western part of the Lunpola Basin contain some hydrogen-rich Type I and II oil-prone kerogens at a marginally mature level. They have TOC contents of up to 2.62 wt%, S 2 values of up to 17.2 mg HC/g rock and extractable organic matter contents of up to 1731 ppm, indicating good source rock potential for oil generation. This is supported by their high HI values (420 – 720 mg HC/g TOC) and H/C ratios (1.05 – 1.50). The biomarker distributions of the extracts are characterized by odd carbon number predominance (C 23 –C 31 ), low Pr/Ph ratios (0.05 – 0.09), high concentrations of phytane and high gammacerane content, indicating lacustrine reducing and saline conditions.
