    Description: It has been challenging to achieve combined strong magnetoelectric coupling and narrow ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) linewidth in multiferroic heterostructures. Electric field induced large effective field of 175 Oe and narrow FMR linewidth of 40 Oe were observed in FeCoSiB/Si/SiO 2 /PMN-PT heterostructures with substrate clamping effect minimized through removing the Si substrate. As a comparison, FeCoSiB/PMN-PT heterostructures with FeCoSiB film directly deposited on PMN-PT showed a comparable voltage induced effective magnetic field but a significantly larger FMR linewidth of 283 Oe. These multiferroic heterostructures exhibiting combined giant magnetoelectric coupling and narrow ferromagnetic resonance linewidth offer great opportunities for integrated voltage tunable RF magnetic devices.

    Description: Positron generation, using wakefield-accelerated electrons driven into a converter target, was investigated experimentally and through Monte Carlo simulations. Using experimentally measured initial electron distributions from a 60 fs laser system, modeling shows that a collimated wakefield electron beam of moderate energy (50–200 MeV) produces a large number of positrons (∼10 7 ), which are emitted from the rear of a mm-scale, high-Z target with divergence angles between 50 and 150 mrad. The large perpendicular momentum of the positrons was found to be dominated by contributions from multiple small angle Coulomb scattering. Positrons were not observed above background noise for a range of targets where simulations indicate a 5–30× increase in the beam charge was necessary to exceed threshold detection. These results provide new understanding to the fundamental limitations of creating narrow-divergence, high-density positron beams from laser-wakefield platforms for use in future laboratory pair plasma experiments.

    Description: Silicon on insulator (SOI)-based transistors gated by nanogranular SiO 2 proton conducting electrolytes were fabricated to mimic synapse behaviors. This SOI-based device has both top proton gate and bottom buried oxide gate. Electrical transfer properties of top proton gate show hysteresis curves different from those of bottom gate, and therefore, excitatory post-synaptic current and paired pulse facilitation (PPF) behavior of biological synapses are mimicked. Moreover, we noticed that PPF index can be effectively tuned by the spike interval applied on the top proton gate. Synaptic behaviors and functions, like short-term memory, and its properties are also experimentally demonstrated in our device. Such SOI-based electronic synapses are promising for building neuromorphic systems.

    Description: A theoretical interpretation of numerically generated probability density functions (PDFs) of intermittent plasma transport events in unforced zonal flows is provided within the Charney-Hasegawa-Mima (CHM) model. The governing equation is solved numerically with various prescribed density gradients that are designed to produce different configurations of parallel and anti-parallel streams. Long-lasting vortices form whose flow is governed by the zonal streams. It is found that the numerically generated PDFs can be matched with analytical predictions of PDFs based on the instanton method by removing the autocorrelations from the time series. In many instances, the statistics generated by the CHM dynamics relaxes to Gaussian distributions for both the electrostatic and vorticity perturbations, whereas in areas with strong nonlinear interactions it is found that the PDFs are exponentially distributed.

    Description: This work evaluates the defects in HfZrO as a function of Zr addition into HfO 2 and when the dielectric was subjected to a slot-plane-antenna (SPA) plasma treatment in a cyclic process to form TiN/HfZrO/SiON/Si gate stacks. The defect energy levels, estimated by temperature-dependent current-voltage measurements, suggest that Zr addition in HfO 2 modifies the charge state of the oxygen vacancy formation, V + . The influence of electron affinity variation of Hf and Zr ions on the charged oxygen vacancy levels seems to have contributed to the increase in defect activation energy, E a , from 0.32 eV to 0.4 eV. The cyclic SPA plasma exposure further reduces the oxygen vacancy formation because of the film densification. When the dielectric was subjected to a constant voltage stress, the charge state oxygen vacancy formation changes to V 2+ and improvement was eliminated. The trap assisted tunneling behavior, as observed by the stress induced leakage current characteristics, further supports the oxygen vacancy formation model.

    Description: Laser-induced phosphorescence (LIP) is a relatively recent and versatile development for studying flow dynamics. This work investigates certain lanthanide-based molecular complexes for their use in LIP for high-speed sprays. Lanthanide complexes in solutions have been shown to possess long phosphorescence lifetimes (∼1-2 ms) and to emit light in the visible wavelength range. In particular, europium and terbium complexes are investigated using fluorescence/phosphorescence spectrometry, showing that europium-thenoyltrifluoracetone-trioctylphosphineoxide (Eu-TTA-TOPO) can be easily and efficiently excited using a standard frequency-tripled Nd:YAG laser. The emitted spectrum, with maximum intensity at a wavelength of 614 nm, is shown not to vary strongly with temperature (293-383 K). The decay constant of the phosphorescence, while independent of ambient pressure, decreases by approximately 12 μ s/K between 323 and 373 K, with the base level of the decay constant dependent on the used solvent. The complex does not luminesce in the gas or solid state, meaning only the liquid phase is visualized, even in an evaporating spray. By using an internally excited spray containing the phosphorescent complex, the effect of vaporization is shown through the decrease in measured intensity over the length of the spray, together with droplet size measurements using interferometric particle imaging. This study shows that LIP, using the Eu-TTA-TOPO complex, can be used with different solvents, including diesel surrogates. Furthermore, it can be easily handled and used in sprays to investigate spray breakup and evaporation.

    Description: The application of ultrasound in an Atomic Force Microscope (AFM) gives access to subsurface information. However, no commercially AFM exists that is equipped with this technique. The main problems are the electronic crosstalk in the AFM setup and the insufficiently strong excitation of the cantilever at ultrasonic (MHz) frequencies. In this paper, we describe the development of an add-on that provides a solution to these problems by using a special piezo element with a lowest resonance frequency of 2.5 MHz and by separating the electronic connection for this high frequency piezo element from all other connections. In this sense, we support researches with the possibility to perform subsurface measurements with their existing AFMs and hopefully pave also the way for the development of a commercial AFM that is capable of imaging subsurface features with nanometer resolution.

    Description: E × B shear and trapped electron precession shear induced suppression of micro-turbulence is studied in general tokamak geometry. A systematic derivation of a two-point equation for trapped electron related turbulence based on modern bounce kinetic formalism is performed. A two-point nonlinear analysis yields the new criterion for the turbulence suppression | ω E × B + ω PS | 〉 Δ ω T , where Δ ω T is decorrelation rate of the ambient turbulence, ω E × B is E × B shearing rate in general tokamak geometry [Hahm and Burrell, Phys. Plasmas 2 , 1648 (1995)], and ω PS is precession shearing rate. Therefore, both E × B shear and trapped electron precession shear can contribute to suppression of turbulence, and these effects can either add up or subtract depending on their relative sign. This result provides a better understanding of electron thermal internal transport barrier formation under various conditions.

    Description: Temperature-dependent strength of Bi-Sb-Te under uniaxial compression is investigated. Bi-Sb-Te samples were produced by three methods: vertical zone-melting, hot extrusion, and spark plasma sintering (SPS). For zone-melted and extruded samples, the brittle-ductile transition occurs over a temperature range of 200-350 °C. In nanostructured samples produced via SPS, the transition is observed in a narrower temperature range of 170-200 °C. At room temperature, the strength of the nanostructured samples is higher than that of zone-melted and extruded samples, but above 300 °C, all samples decrease to roughly the same strength.

    Description: We report on the successful operation of a newly developed cryogenic jet target at high intensity laser-irradiation. Using the frequency-doubled Titan short pulse laser system at Jupiter Laser Facility, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, we demonstrate the generation of a pure proton beam a with maximum energy of 2 MeV. Furthermore, we record a quasi-monoenergetic peak at 1.1 MeV in the proton spectrum emitted in the laser forward direction suggesting an alternative acceleration mechanism. Using a solid-density mixed hydrogen-deuterium target, we are also able to produce pure proton-deuteron ion beams. With its high purity, limited size, near-critical density, and high-repetition rate capability, this target is promising for future applications.
