    Description: Indentation of rigid blocks into rheologically weak orogens is generally associated with spatiotemporally variable vertical and lateral block extrusion. The European Eastern and Southern Alps are a prime example of microplate indentation, where most of the deformation was accommodated north of the crustal indenter within the Tauern Window. However, outside of this window only the broad late-stage exhumation pattern of the indented units as well as of the indenter itself is known. In this study we refine the exhumational pattern with new (U–Th–Sm)/He and fission-track thermochronology data on apatite from the Karawanken Mountains adjacent to the eastern Periadriatic fault and from the central-eastern Southern Alps. Apatite (U–Th–Sm)/He ages from the Karawanken Mountains range between 12 and 5 Ma and indicate an episode of fault-related exhumation leading to the formation of a positive flower structure and an associated peripheral foreland basin. In the Southern Alps, apatite (U–Th–Sm)/He and fission-track data combined with previous data also indicate a pulse of mainly Late Miocene exhumation, which was maximized along thrust systems, with highly differential amounts of displacement along individual structures. Our data contribute to mounting evidence for widespread Late Miocene tectonic activity, which followed a phase of major exhumation during strain localization in the Tauern Window. We attribute this exhumational phase and more distributed deformation during Adriatic indentation to a major change in boundary conditions operating on the orogen, likely due to a shift from a decoupled to a coupled system, possibly enhanced by a shift in convergence direction.

    Notes: Noble gas (He, Ar, Kr, and Xe) van der Waals (vdW) complexes of I2 formed in axiosymmetric, pulsed jet expansions were studied by absorption using intracavity laser spectroscopy (ILS). Absorption spectra of I2He, I2Ar, I2Ar2, and I2Ar3 as well as previously undetected I2Kr, I2Kr2, I2Kr3, I2Xe, and I2Xe2 were recorded using B(3Π+0u)←X transitions (Figs. 2–4 and Table I). The formation efficiencies of nine I2–noble gas vdW complexes were studied as a function of expansion conditions (Table II). Comparisons of absorption and laser-induced fluorescence data provide an analysis of excited-state dissociation mechanisms for the overall He, Ar, Kr, and Xe chemical series and as a function of vibrational level populated in the B(3Π+0u) state for I2He and I2Ar. The competition between the electronic and vibrational predissociation of the vdW complex is discussed with respect to absorption data.

    Notes: The Saros cycle of 223 synodic months played an important role in Late Babylonian astronomy. It was used to predict the dates of future eclipse possibilities together with the times of those eclipses and underpinned the development of mathematical lunar theories. The excess length of the Saros over a whole number of days varies due to solar and lunar anomaly between about 6 and 9 h. We here investigate two functions which model the length of the Saros found in Babylonian sources: a simple zigzag function with an 18-year period presented on the tablet BM 45861 and a function which varies with the month of the year constructed from rules found on the important procedure text TU 11. These functions are shown to model nature very well and to be closely related. We further conclude that these functions are the likely source of the Saros lengths used to calculate the times of predicted eclipses and were probably known by at latest the mid-sixth-century BC.

    Notes: Abstract This article presents a wetland habitat assessment technique (HAT) using birds as indicators of habitat quality. The technique is quick, simple, inexpensive, and lends itself to screening large numbers of wetlands. HAT can provide input to more extensive evaluation techniques. Measures of species diversity and rarity are used to assess the quality of the wetland. By applying the notion of ecologically optimum size, the technique addresses the issue of economic efficiency. Results of field testing HAT on 11 tidally influenced wetlands are presented to illustrate HAT's utility. Application of HAT in a variety of situations is discussed.

    Notes: Abstract Oligopeptides essential to primitive cells could not be obtained just by raising the background noise of organic compounds produced by a prebiotic chemistry working at random. Selection pathways were required. Experimental evidence is given for selective condensation of amino acids in water as well as for selective resistance to degradation. It is shown that N-carboxyanhydrides are good candidates for chemical selection in water. They are formed when active esters of amino acids are left in the presence of bicarbonate ions or when N,N'-carbonyldiimidazole is used as condensing agent. Polymerization of a mixture of proteinaceous and non-proteinaceous amino acids leads to an enrichment in the proteinaceous ones plusα-aminobutyric acid. Selective resistance toward degradation ofβ-pleated sheet conformation is used to exemplify a possible accumulation of homochiral sequences made of hydrophilic and strong hydrophobic residues. Amino acids with branched aliphatic side-chains are selected but those having short linear aliphatic side-chains such asα-aminobutyric acid or norvaline are not.
