Notes: Abstract Mean fitness is non-decreasing in the symmetry sector of the frequency trajectory followed in competitive replication at sublinear propagation rates (parabolic time course). This sector contains the pairwise symmetric distribution of species frequencies and its neighboring states, and represents at least half the possible states of an evolving sublinear system. States in the non-symmetry sector produce a negative rate of change in mean fitness. The heterogeneous steady state attained in a finite sublinear system is destabilized by formation of a variant with above-threshold fitness. Evolution in the post-steady-state interval elevates the fitness threshold for coexistence. Contrary to the proposition that ‘parabolic growth invariably results in the survival of all competing species’, only species with sufficient fitness to avoid subthreshold fitness survive.

Notes: Abstract Recursive linear hashing is a hashing technique proposed for files which can grow and shrink dynamically. The scheme is an extension of linear hashing, a method originally proposed by Litwin, but unlike Litwin's scheme, it does not require conventional overflow pages. In this paper, we investigate the application of recursive linear hashing to partial match retrieval problems. Consistent with the results for primary key retrieval, recursive linear hashing performs better than the conventional scheme on these problems, especially at high load factors.

Notes: Abstract A swirl flow with a free surface is susceptible to centrifugal, capillary, and Rayleigh-Taylor instabilities. The present work extends the stability criteria of Rayleigh and Synge for inviscid and viscous fluids, respectively, to free-surface configurations.

Notes: Abstract Explicit solutions and corresponding wall vorticities are calculated for Stokes flows in which a fraction of the flux of a plane or axisymmetric duct flow is forced to leave the duct via a wall sink.

Notes: Abstract A semi-invariant in surgery is an invariant of a quadratic Poincaré complex which is defined in terms of a null-cobordism. We define five such gadgets: the semicharacteristic, the semitorsion, the cross semitorsion, the torsion semicharacteristic, and the cross torsion semicharacteristic. We describe applications to the evaluation of surgery obstructions, especially in the odd-dimensional case.

Notes: Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench] is grown in rotation with wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) and soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] in the mid-Atlantic. Sufficient data on N fertilization of sorghum are not available for this region. Our objective was to evaluate the influence of multi-rate N fertilization on dryland sorghum. Treatments consisted of factorial combinations of four starter-band N rates (11, 34, 56, and 78 kg N ha−1) and four sidedress N rates (0, 45, 90, and 134 kg N ha−1). A broadcast treatment of 67 kg N ha−1 at planting was also included. Starter-band was applied 5 cm to the side and below the seed. Sidedress was applied 35 days after emergence at the eight-leaf growth stage. Grain yield ranged from 1.7 to 11.9 Mg ha−1 over eight site-years and was responsive and nonresponsive to N applications on four sites each. Nonresponsiveness was either due to high levels (〉85 kg N ha−1) of residual soil mineral N, or severe water stress conditions. Our results indicate that production of sorghum on soils testing high in mineral N (50 kg N ha−1 in the surface 0.3 m) at planting should not receive any starter-band N in conjunction with sidedress N application of 130 kg N ha−1 for optimum economic return to N fertilization. For soils testing low in mineral N, 40 kg N ha−1 starter-band in conjunction with 130 kg N ha−1 sidedress N should optimize the sorghum yields in most situations.

Notes: Abstract: Some new operator versions of the Schwarz inequality are obtained. One of them is a counterpart of the variance-covariance inequality in the context of noncommutative probability.
