    Description: Soil moisture–atmosphere feedbacks play an important role in the regional climate over many regions worldwide, not only for the mean climate but also for extreme events. Several studies have shown that the extent and severity of droughts and heat waves can be significantly impacted by dry or wet soil moisture conditions. To date, the impact of soil moisture on heavy rainfall events has been less frequently investigated. Thus, we consider the role of soil moisture in the formation of heavy rainfall using the Oder flood event in July 1997 as an example. Here, we used the regional climate model CCLM as an uncoupled standalone model and the coupled COSTRICE system, where CCLM is coupled with an ocean and a sea ice model over the Baltic and North Sea regions. The results from climate simulations over Europe show that the coupled model can capture the second phase (18–20 July) of heavy rainfall that led to the Oder flood, while the uncoupled model does not. Sensitivity experiments demonstrate that the better performance of the coupled model can be attributed to the simulated soil moisture conditions in July 1997 in Central Europe, which were wetter for the coupled model than for the uncoupled model. This finding indicates that the soil moisture preceding the event significantly impacted the generation of heavy rainfall in this second phase. The better simulation in the coupled model also implies the added value that the atmosphere–ocean coupling has on the simulation of this specific extreme event. As none of the model versions captured the first phase (4–8 July), despite the differences in soil moisture, it can be concluded that the importance of soil moisture for the generation of heavy rainfall events strongly depends on the event and the general circulation pattern associated with it.     Description: Ovarian cancer is the leading cause of death among gynecological cancers, but is poorly amenable to preoperative diagnosis. In this study, we investigate the feasibility of “optical biopsy,” using high-optical-resolution photoacoustic microscopy (OR-PAM) to quantify the microvasculature of ovarian and fallopian tube tissue. The technique is demonstrated using excised human ovary and fallopian tube specimens imaged immediately after surgery. Quantitative parameters are derived using Amira software. The parameters include three-dimensional vascular segment count, total volume and length, which are associated with tumor angiogenesis. Qualitative results of OR-PAM demonstrate that malignant ovarian tissue has larger and more tortuous blood vessels as well as smaller vessels of different sizes, while benign and normal ovarian tissue has smaller vessels of uniform size. Quantitative analysis shows that malignant ovaries have greater tumor vessel volume, length and number of segments, as compared with benign and normal ovaries. The vascular pattern of benign fallopian tube is different than that of benign ovarian tissue. Our initial results demonstrate the potential of OR-PAM as an imaging tool for fast assessment of ovarian tissue and fallopian tube and could avoid unnecessary surgery if the risk of the examined ovary is extremely low.

    Notes: Summary Studies were carried out to define antigenic characteristics of the rabbit renal collecting duct. Renal papillae of adult rabbits were homogenized, centrifuged, and the 600×g pellet was extracted with 0.5% Triton X-100 in the presence of 1 M NaCl. The crude extract was fractionated on an anion exchange column (DEAE cellulose). A fraction enriched in acidic proteins that co-purified with a radioactive 150 kd glycoprotein from cultured collecting duct cells (Minuth 1982), was used for immunization of guinea pigs. The antiserum shows the following characteristics as revealed by indirect immunofluorescence on the rabbit kidney: 1) Among all tubular epithelial cells only principal cells of the collecting duct and the connecting tubule cell show immunoreactivity. 2) The antiserum decorates the epithelial-interstitial interface of the whole collecting duct as well as of connecting tubule and thick ascending limb of Henle's loop. 3) There is immunoreactivity of interstitial fibers throughout the kidney. 4) Epithelial cells in a variety of other organs in rabbit did not react with the antiserum. Our data demonstrate an antigenic distinction of both, the connecting tubule cell and the principal cell, discriminating these cells from other tubular epithelial cells including the intercalated cells of the collecting duct system. Furthermore, our findings point to a heterogeneity along the distal nephron with respect to the constituents of the epithelial-interstitial interface.

L 'Herit. ex Ait. and the hybrid species Pelargonium zonale hort. ‘Stadt Bern’' revealed the occurrence of hybrid variegation in the genus Pelargonium 2) The plastids in the green-white variegated plants were sorted out in the quick apical way characteristic for Pelargonium chimera. Six types of periclinal chimeras could be observed. 3) The DNAs of the two different plastomes can be distinguished by restriction endonuclease analysis with EcoRl and BamHI. 4) The differences in the cleavage patterns allowed a detailed description of the process of sorting out of the two parental plastids types within the variegated hybrids on the level of their plastid DNA. In all cases observed the cleavage pattern of ‘Roseum’ plastid DNA was found in the green tissue and the pattern of ‘Stadt Bern’ plastid DNA in the white tissue. 5) From these results we draw the conclusion that there is a disharmony between the F1-hybrid nucleus and the plastome of Stadt Bern', which blocks the normal differentiation of ‘Stadt Bern’ plastids.

    Notes: Summary The comparison of EcoRI patterns of chloroplast DNAs (ctDNAs) from five species of the genus Pelargonium and from 16 cultivars and varieties of Pelargonium zonale hort. demonstrates a remarkable inter- and intraspecific ctDNA (plastome) variation. The plastome of the P. zonale varieties could be differentiated into groups I, II and III. Reasons for this variation seem to be: occurrence of numerous spontaneous plastome mutations, intense hybridisation by gardeners and breeders, and biparental plastid inheritance. Crosses of P. zonale varieties with different ctDNA types lead to the direct evidence on the molecular level of biparental plastid inheritance and plastid sorting-out in F1-hybrids.

    Notes: Abstract Observations of young fertile leaf primordia provide information about the development of the sporophyll ofAnemia phyllitidis Sw. The marginal meristem which surrounds the leaf primordium forms the pinna primordia, firstly the two “spore pinnae” by meristem fractionation. These are turned with their adaxial side towards the leaf apex and continue marginal meristem fractionations until products of the 5th order are formed.—In the sporophyll development two events are significant: (1) The fractionation products of the 2nd order reverse their direction of coiling. (2) From the marginal meristem of the fractionation products of the 5th order the sporangia arise in acropetal succession each originating from one initial cell.—Three observations—the fractionation products of the 2nd order being accessory outgrowths of the leaf margin, their reversed coiling direction, and the aggregation of the sporangia on the last segments—lead to the following concept of a sorus type: Each fractionation product of the 2nd order represents a marginal acropetal sorus with a branched receptaculum.
