Description: Building on the experiences and results of the previous two Antarctic voyages with FFS "Walther Herwig" 1975/76 and 1977/78, in the spring of 1981 the third voyage of this ship to the Southern Ocean took place. The transit to and from Antarctica are included here as well. After leaving Montevideo on January 20, 1981 FFS "Walther Herwig" took part in the international FIBEX program.

Description: The voyage of the fishing research vessel Anton Dohrn was mainly in an east-west direction. The changes in the mixing ratio of ozone are mainly due to meteorological processes. The device worked reliably. The supervisor was U. Kaminski (DWD).

Description: This dataset contains the surface ozone measurements conducted during Walther Herwig cruises WH082 and WH085 in 1987. The ozone mixing ratios during WH082 showed strong variations, which can be attributed to meteorological features, most likely stratospheric intrusions. During WH085 there were relatively little variations.

Description: On the outward journey, European air masses, loaded by photochemically produced ozone, may have partly influenced the measurements in clean air. As simultaneously measured low concentrations of Krypton-85 (which only has anthropogenic sources) show, the high ozone mixing ratios at 0-5°N cannot be explained by photochemical formation, but must be of natural origin. On the return journey, the ITCZ was at 6°S and was weak. This explains the very low ozone values of only 4 ppb at times, caused by the photolysis of ozone. The ozone device was housed in the crow's nest, to avoid ship-polluted interference. At later cruises, the instrument was placed near the weather station, because the maintenance in the crow’s nest was impractical and the new air intake at the uppermost railing turned out to be suitable as well. As a precaution, the air pump was changed nine times during the trip. At the end of the last section, the pump wobbled a little, resulting in a five percent loss of production, which could be corrected

Description: This dataset contains the ozone measurements conducted during Walther Herwig cruise WH068 in January-April 1985 and includes the transits to and from this cruise. The ozone minimum at 8°S on the return trip is striking. Here, under conditions of low vertical exchange and high solar radiation, ozone may have been decomposed by photolysis

Description: On the outward journey of PS06 an ozone minimum was encountered at the ITCZ, as is typical for high levels of solar radiation and low vertical exchange. Under such conditions, ozone can be depleted by photolysis, but cannot be replaced due to weak vertical exchange. On the return voyage, two ozone peaks occurred at and north of the ITCZ. According to Class and Ballschmiter (1986) who measured some organic trace gases, the ITCZ consisted of two branches found at 2°S and 2°N. The noticeable ozone peaks may have been caused by strong vertical exchange, with ozone being mixed down from the upper troposphere. In some cases, clear daily variations were recorded during the journey.

Description: The voyage 119 of the fisheries research ship Anton Dohrn served to investigate fish stocks. On August 8th, 1982, there was a marked peak in the ozone mixing ratio in connection with the passage of an occlusion during the return journey. The ozone mixing ratio generally decreased northward on both the outward and return voyages. The device worked reliably.

Description: These are the result of Ozone measurement on the voyage AD110 of the fisheries research ship Anton Dohrn. On average, there is a decrease in ozone towards the north, both on the outward and return journey. The variations are caused by meteorological factors. The device worked reliably.

Description: To mark the centenary of Swedish polar explorer Nordenskjöld's research trip, Sweden hosted a new research trip to the polar region between Franz Josef Land, Svalbard and Greenland. The icebreaker Ymer, which otherwise operates in the Baltic Sea, was used for this purpose. Several containers were set up on the prow in front of the bridge. The ozone device was installed in an air chemistry laboratory container on the port side, from where the intake line was routed to the railing mounted above. The voyage was mostly in the pack-ice belt and the crew was instructed to keep the ship bow-to-wind whenever possible so that air-chemical measurements with long sampling times remained undisturbed. The device was stable. On the return trip to Stockholm, the wind was mostly unfavorable, so that south of 70°N hardly any usable data could be obtained.
