    Abstract: This book covers advances in the field of karst from a variety of perspectives to facilitate knowledge and promote interaction between disciplines. New methods are addressed that advance data collection, analysis, and interpretation in a wide range of karst contexts. Case studies are presented to provide examples of advancing science. Issues addressed include karst hydrogeology (water resources assessment, groundwater pollution and protection), methods to study karst aquifers (based on hydrodynamic, hydrochemistry, isotopes, dye tracing, geophysical surveys, and modeling techniques), karst geomorphology and landscape, mining and engineering in karst media (tunnels, dams, etc.), and karst cavities (touristic caves, natural heritage). This book is a resource for scientists around the world to compare problems, results, and solutions. Likewise, the examples included are used in policy decision making in karst regions. Finally, the contributions are used as a tool for university teaching.

    Description: Distributed acoustic sensing (DAS) technology provides the capability to efficiently acquire dense and continuous seismic data on preexisting, unused fiber‐optic cables buried in the ground (dark fiber) that were originally deployed for telecommunication. However, these fiber installations typically use existing “right‐of‐way corridors” along roadways and railway tracks, leading to piecewise linear or quasi‐linear seismic receiver geometries, thereby reducing their utility in seismic studies over a broad areal extent. Short‐term and dense arrays of seismometers can be deployed to complement dark fiber DAS arrays, leading to improved seismic receiver coverage over a broader area in the vicinity of the DAS array. This study describes the deployment strategies and procedures, data, and metadata of a contemporaneous and complementary network of three temporary broadband seismic stations and 69 nodal seismometers operated in the vicinity of a 27 km long segment of dark fiber DAS array in the Imperial Valley, Southern California. The study area is a sedimentary basin characterized by intense seismicity and faulting in a transtensional tectonic regime, and hosts multiple producing geothermal fields. The broadband stations used direct‐burial sensors with a corner period of 120 s and operated continuously for a year from September 2021 to September 2022. The 5 Hz three‐component nodal seismometers acquired continuous data for a month approximately from February to March 2022 over a ∼37 km × ∼24 km area, with an average interstation spacing of ∼3 km. Both the broadband and the nodal stations recorded a wealth of ambient seismic noise and high‐quality local earthquake data that can be used in a variety of seismological analyses, including local earthquake detection and location, and body‐wave and surface‐wave tomography.

    Description: The seismic activity of a planet can be described by the corner magnitude, events larger than which are extremely unlikely, and the seismic moment rate, the long‐term average of annual seismic moment release. Marsquake S1222a proves large enough to be representative of the global activity of Mars and places observational constraints on the moment rate. The magnitude‐frequency distribution of relevant Marsquakes indicates a $b$‐value of 1.06. The moment rate is likely between $1.55\times {10}^{15}\mathrm{N}\mathrm{m}/\mathrm{a}$ and $1.97\times {10}^{18}\mathrm{N}\mathrm{m}/\mathrm{a}$, with a marginal distribution peaking at $4.9\times {10}^{16}\mathrm{N}\mathrm{m}/\mathrm{a}$. Comparing this with pre‐InSight estimations shows that these tended to overestimate the moment rate, and that 30% or more of the tectonic deformation may occur silently, whereas the seismicity is probably restricted to localized centers rather than spread over the entire planet.
    Description: Plain Language Summary: The seismic moment rate is a measure for how fast quakes accumulate deformation of the planet's rigid outer layer, the lithosphere. In the past decades, several models for the deformation rate of Mars were developed either from the traces quakes leave on the surface, or from mathematical models of how quickly the planet's interior cools down and shrinks. The large marsquake that occurred on the 4th of May 2022 now allows a statistical estimation of the deformation accumulated on Mars per year, and thus to confront these models with reality. It turns out that, although there is a considerable overlap, the models published prior to InSight tend to overestimate the seismic moment rate, and hence the ongoing deformation on Mars. Possible explanations are that 30% or more of the deformation occurs silently, that is, without causing quakes, or that not the entire planet is seismically active but only specific regions.

    Description: The formation of low stratus cloud over idealized hills is investigated using numerical model simulations. The main driver for the cloud formation is radiative cooling due to outgoing longwave radiation. Despite a purely horizontal flow, the advection terms in the prognostic equations for heat and moisture produce vertical mixing across the upper cloud edge, leading to a loss of cloud water content. This behavior is depicted via a budget analysis. More precisely, this spurious mixing is caused by the diffusive error of the advection scheme in regions where the sloping surfaces of the terrain‐following vertical coordinate intersect the cloud top. This study shows that the intensity of the (spurious) numerical diffusion depends strongly on the horizontal resolution, the order of the advection schemes, and the choice of scalar advection scheme. A large‐eddy simulation with 4‐m horizontal resolution serves as a reference. For horizontal resolutions of a few hundred meters and simulations carried out with a model setup as used in numerical weather prediction, a strong reduction of the simulated liquid‐water path is observed. In order to keep the (spurious) numerical diffusion at coarser resolutions small, at least a fifth‐order advection scheme should be used. In the present case, a weighted essentially nonoscillatory scalar advection scheme turns out to increase the numerical diffusion along a sharp cloud edge compared with an upwind scheme. Furthermore, the choice of vertical coordinate has a strong impact on the simulated liquid‐water path over orography. With a modified definition of the sigma coordinate, it is possible to produce cloud water where the classical sigma coordinate does not allow any cloud formation.

    Description: Esta Antología personal de la escritora argentina Alicia Kozameh, precedida por un Estudio preliminar de la catedrática María A. Semilla Durán, tiene un doble objetivo: el de iniciar al lector en el conocimiento de una obra literaria personalísima por una parte; el de guiarlo en su lectura e interpretación de la misma por otra. Los textos así seleccionados están organizados cronológicamente, y constituyen un corte transversal de la obra total, que deja ver cada uno de los estratos que la componen. El volumen se prestigia con una reflexión inédita de la autora sobre la indefensión de la persona ante la escritura autobiográfica. El estudio preliminar que introduce el volumen acompaña el viaje del lector a través de los textos, analizando las secuencias seleccionadas y leyéndolas desde una perspectiva global, atenta a la evolución de la escritura al hilo del tiempo. Para completar la mirada crítica, incluimos al final un instrumento pedagógico destinado a los estudiantes que quisieran trabajar sobre las obras de Alicia Kozameh, consistente en una serie de orientaciones válidas para la indagación de su escritura.

    Description: Hacia finales de la década de los ochenta, en Colombia, se comienza a aplicar un proceso de estabilización y ajuste estructural de la economía, basados en las nuevas reglas del mercado que se implantaron por las recomendaciones de organismos multilaterales como el F.M.I., como una estrategia para alcanzar una senda de crecimiento del país en el largo plazo. Lo anterior, acompañado de la reforma constitucional de 1991, condujo a una fase de debilitamiento de las condiciones laborales que inicialmente abarcó el periodo 1996-2001 y luego se profundizó (Martínez, 2008). Así, al entrar el país en las dinámicas de apertura económica y globalización, se involucraba la flexibilidad y disminución de los costos laborales, como una forma de estimular la inversión y ponerse a la par con mercados externos donde la mano de obra es barata y fácil para contratar, lo que llevó a una situación de inestabilidad e incertidumbre en el trabajador en materia laboral (Pizarro, 2001).

    Description: En el primer capítulo los investigadores estudiaron los niveles de eficiencia de 44 hospitales públicos del Departamento del Valle del Cauca, referente a los servicios de Ginecología y Obstetricia, Odontología y, Urgencias, entre los años 2007-2014. Los autores adoptan un método determinístico no paramétrico reciente, hasta ahora no aplicado en estudios científicos de salud en Colombia, el cual combina el Análisis de Eficiencia Multidireccional con otras relevantes técnicas, para comparar grupos con diferentes niveles de eficiencia. Realizando una aproximación más directa a la problemática de las instituciones públicas prestadoras de servicios de salud, y utilizando métodos de intervención financiera, el capítulo segundo hace referencia a la crisis económica del Hospital Universitario del Valle (HUV). Los autores se centran en la evaluación de las razones por las cuales el hospital llegó a la situación crítica que le obligó a solicitar el beneficio de la reestructuración contemplado en la Ley 550 de 1990.
