    Description: In this work, we aim to characterize high-mass clumps with infall motions. We selected 327 clumps from the Millimetre Astronomy Legacy Team 90-GHz survey, and identified 100 infall candidates. Combined with the results of He et al., we obtained a sample of 732 high-mass clumps, including 231 massive infall candidates and 501 clumps where infall is not detected. Objects in our sample were classified as pre-stellar, proto-stellar, H ii or photodissociation region (PDR). The detection rates of the infall candidates in the pre-stellar, proto-stellar, H ii and PDR stages are 41.2 per cent, 36.6 per cent, 30.6 per cent and 12.7 per cent, respectively. The infall candidates have a higher H 2 column density and volume density compared with the clumps where infall is not detected at every stage. For the infall candidates, the median values of the infall rates at the pre-stellar, proto-stellar, H ii and PDR stages are 2.6 x 10 –3 , 7.0 x 10 –3 , 6.5 x 10 –3 and 5.5 x 10 –3 M  yr –1 , respectively. These values indicate that infall candidates at later evolutionary stages are still accumulating material efficiently. It is interesting to find that both infall candidates and clumps where infall is not detected show a clear trend of increasing mass from the pre-stellar to proto-stellar, and to the H ii stages. The power indices of the clump mass function are 2.04 ± 0.16 and 2.17 ± 0.31 for the infall candidates and clumps where infall is not detected, respectively, which agree well with the power index of the stellar initial mass function (2.35) and the cold Planck cores (2.0).

    Description: Massive star-forming regions with observed infall motions are good sites for studying the birth of massive stars. In this paper, 405 compact sources have been extracted from the APEX Telescope Large Area Survey of the Galaxy (ATLASGAL) compact sources that also have been observed in the Millimetre Astronomy Legacy Team 90-GHz (MALT90) survey during years 1 and 2. These observations are complemented with Spitzer GLIMPSE/MIPSGAL mid-IR survey data to help classify the elected star-forming clumps into three evolutionary stages: pre-stellar, proto-stellar and UCHII regions. The results suggest that 0.05 g cm –2 is a reliable empirical lower bound for the clump surface densities required for massive-star formation to occur. The optically thick HCO + (1-0) and HNC(1-0) lines, as well as the optically thin N 2 H + (1-0) line were used to search for infall motions towards these sources. By analysing the asymmetries of the optically thick HCO + (1-0) and HNC(1-0) lines and the mapping observations of HCO + (1-0), a total of 131 reliable infall candidates have been identified. The HCO + (1-0) line shows the highest occurrence of obvious asymmetric features, suggesting that it may be a better infall motion tracer than other lines such as HNC(1-0). The detection rates of infall candidates towards pre-stellar, proto-stellar and UCHII clumps are 0.3452, 0.3861 and 0.2152, respectively. The relatively high detection rate of infall candidates towards UCHII clumps indicates that many UCHII regions are still accreting matter. The peak column densities and masses of the infall candidates, in general, display an increasing trend with progressing evolutionary stages. However, the rough estimates of the mass infall rate show no obvious variation with evolutionary stage.

    Description: Seifertite SiO 2 likely exists as a minor phase near the core–mantle boundary. By simulating the pressure and temperature conditions near the core–mantle boundary, seifertite was synthesized as a minor phase in a coarse-grained, polycrystalline sample coexisting with the (Mg,Fe)SiO 3 post-perovskite (pPv) phase at 129 GPa and 2500 K. Here we report the first in situ single-crystal structure determination and refinement of seifertite at high pressure and after a temperature quench from laser heating. We improved the data coverage of a minor phase from a diamond-anvil cell (DAC) by merging single-crystal data of seifertite from six selected grains that had different orientations. Observed systematic absences of reflections from the six individual grains allowed only one space group: Pbcn . The refined results of seifertite are in good agreement with the predictions from previous first-principles calculations at high pressure. This approach provides a method for structure determination of a minor phase in a mineral assemblage synthesized under P - T conditions representative of the deep Earth.

    Description: 〈p〉The edges of layered materials have unique properties that substantially differ from the body regions. In this work, we perform a systematic Raman study of the edges of various layered materials (MoS〈sub〉2〈/sub〉, WS〈sub〉2〈/sub〉, WSe〈sub〉2〈/sub〉, PtS〈sub〉2〈/sub〉, and black phosphorus). The Raman spectra of the edges feature newly observed forbidden Raman modes, which are originally undetectable from the body region. By selecting the edge type and the polarization directions of the incident and scattered light, all forbidden Raman modes are distinctly detected. Optical simulations show that the edges of layered materials drastically distort the electromagnetic fields of both the incident and scattered light, so that the light interacts with the edges in a distinct way, which differs from its interactions with the body regions.〈/p〉

    Description: Models suggest that dispersal patterns will influence age- and sex-dependent helping behavior in social species. Duolocal social systems (where neither sex disperses and mating is outside the group) are predicted to be associated with mothers favoring sons over daughters (because the latter are in reproductive competition with each other). Other models predict daughter-biased investment when benefits of wealth to sons are less than daughters. Here, we test whether sex-biased investment is occurring in the duolocal Mosuo of southwestern China. Using demographic and observational data from Mosuo, we show support for both hypotheses, in that 1) males are more likely to disperse from their natal household if their mother dies, but females are not; 2) a large number of brothers increases the likelihood that both females and males disperse, whereas a large number of sisters only increases female dispersal; 3) mothers help daughters reproduce earlier and reduce death risk of daughter’s children, but not sons or sons’ children; 4) data on multiple paternity show that female reproductive success does not suffer from multiple partners, and in males multiple mates are associated with higher reproductive success, indicating that mothers can benefit from investing in their sons’ mating effort; and 5) gift decisions reveal similar kin effects to those shown in the demographic data, with mothers helping adult daughters and adult sons equally, but helping only her daughter’s children, not her son’s children. Mosuo mothers may invest resources for parental investment in their daughters and their offspring, while investing in their sons mating effort.

    Description: Coupled physical–biological modelling experiments were made for the period of 1995–2009 to analyse the spatial and interannual variability of nutrients and phytoplankton production in the Gulf of Maine (GOM). The physical model was the Finite-Volume Community Ocean Model (FVCOM) and the biological model was a Nitrogen, Phytoplankton, Zooplankton, and Detritus (NPZD) model. The simulation was carried out with realistic meteorological surface forcing, five major tidal constituents, river discharge, and observation-based open boundary conditions. The results were robust with comparison to SeaWiFS chlorophyll data and historical data of nitrogen. An Empirical Orthogonal Function analysis clearly identified two dominant modes in nutrient and phytoplankton dynamics: (1) sustained nutrient supply and phytoplankton production from spring through autumn, and (2) a dominating phytoplankton bloom in spring, relatively low production in summer, and a noticeable bloom in autumn. Mode 1 was a dominant feature in strong tidal energy dissipation regions such as the southwestern shelf of Nova Scotia, Georges Bank, Nantucket Shoals, the Bay of Fundy, and the coastal regions of GOM, where tidal pumping and mixing were the major drivers for the sustained nutrient supply, and primary production showed certain resilience with less interannual variability. Mode 2 was a characteristic in the deep Gulf, the offshore region of the Scotian Shelf, and in the open sea area, where the timing and amplitude of the spring phytoplankton bloom is essentially controlled by the salinity regime, and its interannual variability was significantly influenced by freshening events controlled by local and remote forcing.
