    Description: Gravity waves (GW) transport energy and momentum from troposphere upwards into the mesosphere, playing an important role connecting the tropospheric weather with the space weather. The NASA Aeronomy of Ice in the Mesosphere (AIM) satellite was launched in 2007 and provided important GW information within PMC near the mesopause region. The newly developed Rayleigh Albedo Abnormally (RAA) data from The Cloud Imaging and Particle Size (CIPS) instrument measure GWs globally outside the PMC region, at the bottom of the mesosphere (~55 km). As part of the international Antarctica Gravity Wave Instrument Network (ANGWIN) project, Utah State University has been running OH All-Sky Imagers (ASI) for more than 10 years at the Australian Davis station (69°S, 78°E) and the British Rothera Station (68°S, 68°W). High quality night time GW images in OH (3,1) intensity are obtained at the top of the mesosphere (~87 km) during each austral winter seasons. In this study, we will utilize GW data obtained from AIM CIPS and ASI to study the temporal and spatial variation of GWs at these two altitudes and to investigate the small-scale GW propagation characteristics in the high latitude mesosphere.

    Description: The Atmospheric Waves Experiment (AWE) is a NASA Mission of Opportunity designed to investigate the near-global properties and effects of gravity waves as they propagate into the Earth’s upper atmosphere. In particular, AWE will measure the spectrum of small-scale (~30-300 km) gravity waves (GWs) generated by strong weather disturbances, e.g., convection and sustained flow over mountains, that impact the ionosphere and thermosphere via the mesosphere. An IR 4-channel imaging system built by the Space Dynamic Lab (SDL) at Utah State University (USU) will be deployed on the International Space Station (ISS) in December 2023. During two years, the AWE instrument will map the nighttime hydroxyl (OH) layer (~87 km), providing 2D gravity wave (GW) fields in mesospheric temperature and OH band intensity over a 600 km field-of-view, every second. The AWE orbit will cover ~85 % of the earth, between ± 55°. The AWE data will be combined with four state-of-the-art models to achieve the AWE science objectives: · Quantify the seasonal and regional variabilities and influences of GWs near the mesopause, · Identify the dominant dynamical processes controlling GWs observed near the mesopause, · Estimate the wider role of GWs in the Ionosphere-Thermosphere-Mesosphere (ITM). This presentation will give an overview of the AWE mission, update current mission status and describe the AWE data levels using synthetic images.

    Description: The joint European Space Agency and Chinese Academy of Sciences Solar wind Magnetosphere Ionosphere Link Explorer (SMILE) mission will explore global dynamics of the magnetosphere under varying solar wind and interplanetary magnetic field conditions, and simultaneously monitor the auroral response of the Northern Hemisphere ionosphere. Combining these large-scale responses with medium and fine-scale measurements at a variety of cadences by additional ground-based and space-based instruments will enable a much greater scientific impact beyond the original goals of the SMILE mission. Here, we describe current community efforts to prepare for SMILE, and the benefits and context various experiments that have explicitly expressed support for SMILE can offer. A dedicated group of international scientists representing many different experiment types and geographical locations, the Ground-based and Additional Science Working Group, is facilitating these efforts. Preparations include constructing an online SMILE Data Fusion Facility, the discussion of particular or special modes for experiments such as coherent and incoherent scatter radar, and the consideration of particular observing strategies and spacecraft conjunctions. We anticipate growing interest and community engagement with the SMILE mission, and we welcome novel ideas and insights from the solar-terrestrial community.

    Description: Daedalus MASE (Mission Assessment through Simulation Exercise) is an open-source package of scientific analysis tools aimed at research in the Lower Thermosphere-Ionosphere (LTI). It was created with the purpose to assess the performance and demonstrate closure of the mission objectives of Daedalus, a mission concept targeting to perform in-situ measurements in the LTI. However, through its successful usage as a mission-simulator toolset, Daedalus MASE has evolved to encompass numerous capabilities related to LTI science and modeling. Inputs are geophysical observables in the LTI, which can be obtained either through in-situ measurements from spacecraft and rockets, or through Global Circulation Models (GCM). These include ion, neutral and electron densities, ion and neutral composition, ion, electron and neutral temperatures, ion drifts, neutral winds, electric field, and magnetic field. In the examples presented, these geophysical observables are obtained through NCAR’s Thermosphere-Ionosphere-Electrodynamics General Circulation Model. Capabilities of Daedalus MASE include: 1) Calculations of products that are derived from the above geophysical observables, such as Joule heating, energy transfer rates between species, electrical currents, electrical conductivity, ion-neutral collision frequencies between all combinations of species, as well as height-integrations of derived products. 2) Calculation and cross-comparison of collision frequencies and estimates of the effect of using different models of collision frequencies into derived products. 3) Calculation of the uncertainties of derived products based on the uncertainties of the geophysical observables, due to instrument errors or to uncertainties in measurement techniques. 4) Routines for the along-orbit interpolation within gridded datasets of GCMs. 5) Routines for the calculation of the global coverage of an in situ mission in regions of interest and for various conditions of solar and geomagnetic activity. 6) Calculations of the statistical significance of obtaining the primary and derived products throughout an in situ mission’s lifetime. 7) Routines for the visualization of 3D datasets of GCMs and of measurements along orbit. Daedalus MASE code is accompanied by a set of Jupyter Notebooks, incorporating all required theory, references, codes and plotting in a user-friendly environment. Daedalus MASE is developed and maintained at the Department for Electrical and Computer Engineering of the Democritus University of Thrace, with key contributions from several partner institutions.

    Description: The Central and South Atlantic represents a vast ocean area and is home to a diverse range of ecosystems and species. Nevertheless, and similar to the rest of the global south, the area is comparatively understudied yet exposed to increasing levels of multisectoral pressures. To counteract this, the level of scientific exploration in the Central and South Atlantic has increased in recent years and will likely continue to do so within the context of the United Nations (UN) Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development. Here, we compile the literature to investigate the distribution of previous scientific exploration of offshore (30 m+) ecosystems in the Central and South Atlantic, both within and beyond national jurisdiction, allowing us to synthesise overall patterns of biodiversity. Furthermore, through the lens of sustainable management, we have reviewed the existing anthropogenic activities and associated management measures relevant to the region. Through this exercise, we have identified key knowledge gaps and undersampled regions that represent priority areas for future research and commented on how these may be best incorporated into, or enhanced through, future management measures such as those in discussion at the UN Biodiversity Beyond National Jurisdiction negotiations. This review represents a comprehensive summary for scientists and managers alike looking to understand the key topographical, biological, and legislative features of the Central and South Atlantic.

    Description: Of all the interconnected threats facing the planet, the top two are the climate and the biodiversity crises. Neither problem will be solved if we ignore the ocean. To turn the tide in favour of humanity and a habitable planet, we need to recognize and better value the fundamental role that the ocean plays in the earth system, and prioritize the urgent action needed to heal and protect the ocean at the ‘Earthscape’ level – the planetary scale at which processes to support life operate. The countries gathering at COP26 have unparalleled political capacity and leadership to make this happen. COP26 could be the turning point, but there must be commitment to united action for the ocean, as well as planning to meet those commitments, based on science-led solutions that address the interconnectivity of the ocean, climate, and biodiversity. Key ways in which the ocean both contributes to and acts as the major buffer for climate change are summarized, focusing on temperature, but not forgetting the role of storing carbon. It is noted with ‘high confidence’ that the ocean has stored 91% of the excess heat from global warming, with land, melting ice, and the atmosphere only taking up approximately 5, 3, and 1%, respectively. We also highlight the impact of the recent large release of heat from the ocean to the atmosphere during the 2015–2016 El Niño. We then present six science-based policy actions that form a recovery stimulus package for people, climate, nature, and the planet. Our proposals highlight what is needed to view, value, and treat the planet, including the ocean, for the benefit and future of all life.

    Description: Spatial interaction and spatial structure are foundational geographical abstractions, though there is often variation in how they are conceptualized and deployed in quantitative models. In particular, the last five decades have produced an exceptional diversity regarding the role of spatial structure within spatial interaction models. This is explored by outlining the initiation and development of the notion of spatial structure within spatial interaction modeling and critically reviewing four methodological approaches that emerged from ongoing debate about the topic. The outcome is a comprehensive coverage of the past and a sketch of one potential path forward for advancing this long-standing inquiry.
