Description: Ice wedge polygons on steep slopes have generally been described as being covered by periglacial sediments and, typically, the active layer on slopes becomes mobile during thaw periods, which can lead to solifluction. In West Greenland close to the ice margin, however, the active layer and ice wedge polygons are stable despite their occurrence on steep slopes with inclinations of ≥30°. We conducted a soil survey (including sampling for soil analyses and radiocarbon dating) in the Umimmalissuaq valley and installed a field station ~4 km east of the current ice margin to monitor soil temperature and water tension at depths of 10, 20 and 35 cm of the active layer on a steep, north-facing slope in the middle of an ice wedge polygon from 2009 to 2015. Thawing and freezing periods lasted between 2 and 3 months and the active layer was usually completely frozen from November to April. We observed simultaneous and complete water saturation at all three depths of the active layer in one summer for 1 day. The amount of water in the active layer apparently was not enough to trigger solifluction during the summer thaw, even at slope inclinations above 30°. In addition, the dense shrub tundra absorbs most of the water during periods between thawing and freezing, which further stabilizes the slope. This process, together with the dry and continental climate caused by katabatic winds combined with no or limited frost heave, plays a crucial role in determining the stability of these slopes and can explain the presence of large-scale stable ice wedge polygon networks in organic matter-rich permafrost, which is about 5,000 years old. This study underlines the importance of soil hydrodynamics and local climate regime for landscape stability and differing intensities of solifluction processes in areas with strong geomorphological gradients and rising air temperatures.

Description: Stable isotopes (δ18O, δD) of wedge ice hold potential to reconstruct past winter climate conditions. Here, we present records of the marine isotope stages (MIS) 3 and 2 including the last Glacial maximum (LGM) from Bol’shoy Lyakhovsky Island (NE Siberia). MIS 3 wedge ice dated from 52 to 40 Kyr b2k varies between −32 and −29‰ in δ18O. Colder LGM conditions are implied by δ18O of −37‰ around 25 Kyr b2k. Similar Deuterium excess values indicate comparable moisture sources during MIS 3 and MIS 2. Regional LGM climate reconstructions depend on the seasonal resolution of the proxies and model simulations. Our wedge-ice record reflects coldest winters during global minima in atmospheric CO2 and sea level. The extreme LGM winter cooling is not represented in model projections of global LGM climate where West Beringia shows noticeably little cooling or even warming in mean annual temperatures compared to the late Holocene.

Description: The dataset compiles trace element/calcium concentrations measured in individual shells of non-spinose planktic foraminifera Neogloboquadrina dutertrei and Pulleniatina obliquiloculata collected from Eastern Equatorial Pacific core ME0005A-43JC (7.86ºN, 83.6ºW, water depth 1368 m) interval 79-80 cm. Shells are subjected to cleaning and after each cleaning step trace elements are measurement with a laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer at Oregon State University's Keck Lab, which is reported here. The columns include cleaning step, species, shell number, statistic (mean and intra-shell standard deviation, 1σ), Ba/Ca (mmol/mol), Mn/Ca (mmol/mol), Zn/Ca (mmol/mol), Mg/Ca (mmol/mol), and Al/Ca (mmol/mol).

Description: The dataset compiles water current velocities and direction measured by a platform-based upward looking Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler. Data was acquired in August 2018 during the Yukon Coast 2018 expedition to the Herschel Island – Qikiqtaruk coastal observatory, conducted by the Alfred Wegener Institute in Potsdam, Germany. Goal of this project was to find drivers that control nearshore currents and to map their spatio-temporal variation. These currents might play an important role in the transport process of sediments and organic matter in the nearshore zone of the Arctic Ocean. The sediments mainly originate from the rapidly eroding permafrost coasts. The columns of this data file include Date/Time, height above the seafloor of the respective measurement cell (bin), current velocity in east-west direction and current velocity in north-south direction.

Description: Collapse of permafrost coasts delivers large quantities of particulate organic carbon (POC) to arctic coastal areas. The objective of this study is to assess the pathways and fate of POC derived from thawing and eroding permafrost coasts in the nearshore zone, to better understand its impact on the carbon cycle and climate. We collected suspended particulate matter and sediment samples at the coastline and in the nearshore zone of Herschel Island - Qikiqtaruk (N 69.60°; W 139.00°) during a two‐week period in July‐August 2017. Locations were labelled A - H clockwise around the island, starting at the NE corner (Collinson Head). Samples were taken in transects perpendicular to the coast, at point locations offshore ('Monitoring point 1 - 3'), and from 'thaw streams', creeks carrying material from retrogressive thaw slumps and other abrupt thaw features, at various locations around the island. A total of 49 locations were visited; 12 at thaw streams, and 37 in the nearshore zone ranging from right at the shoreline to up to 20 m water depth (about 2 km offshore). We performed biogeochemical analyses (CN, δ13C, Δ14C) and sedimentological analyses (grain size, mineral surface area) in order to trace the pathway of permafrost material from its source to the nearshore water column and sediments.
