Description: This dataset provides palaeoecological and sedimentological data for the Late-glacial and Holocene sediment sequence retrieved from Lake Uddelermeer (The Netherlands) in 2012. Counts of pollen and chironomids are presented against both depth (cm) and age (cal yr. BP), and a loss-on ignition record is presented against depth. A total of 110 samples were analysed for their pollen content; a subset of 32 samples was analysed for sterol and stanol compounds. A total of 1412 samples were analysed for their organic content, approximated through loss-on-ignition. The data provides information on changes in the local and regional vegetation, changes in the within-lake ecosystem and changes in minerogenic input into the lake. The dataset has been used to identify Holocene lake level changes at the site. Cores were retrieved from the centre of the lake using a 3-m long handheld piston corer deployed from a floating coring platform during field work in April and May 2012. Samples were obtained from splits of the core and processed in the laboratory of the University of Amsterdam (the Netherlands) using standard protocols. Individual pollen grains and chironomid head capsules were identified using high-power microscopy, and loss-on-ignition was determined using combustion in a 550C oven. Description: Compared to other Arctic ice masses, Svalbard glaciers are low-elevated with flat interior accumulation areas, resulting in a marked peak in their current hypsometry (area-elevation distribution) at ~450 m above sea level. Since summer melt consistently exceeds winter snowfall, these low-lying glaciers can only survive by refreezing a considerable fraction of surface melt and rain in the porous firn layer covering their accumulation zones. We use a high-resolution climate model to show that modest atmospheric warming in the mid-1980s forced the firn zone to retreat upward by ~100 m to coincide with the hypsometry peak. This led to a rapid areal reduction of firn cover available for refreezing, and strongly increased runoff from dark, bare ice areas, amplifying mass loss from all elevations. As the firn line fluctuates around the hypsometry peak in the current climate, Svalbard glaciers will continue to lose mass and show high sensitivity to temperature perturbations. The data set includes annual cumulative SMB and components statistically downscaled from the output of the Regional Atmospheric Climate Model RACMO2.3 to 500 m spatial resolution (1958-2018). SMB components include total precipitation (snowfall and rainfall), snowfall, runoff, melt, refreezing and retention (mm w.e. per year), as well as summer (June-July-August) 2 m air temperature (K). The data set also includes modelled (RACMO2.3; 1958-2018) and observed (MODIS; 2000-2018) bare ice area, and modelled ablation zone area (1958-2018; km2). The mask file includes longitude/latitude (ºN/ºW), land-sea, ice and sector masks from the Randolph Glacier Inventory version 6, and surface topography (m above sea level) from the S0 Terreng Digital Elevation Model (Norwegian Polar Institute) on the 500 m grid. Daily downscaled SMB and components are available from the authors upon request and without conditions (b.p.y.noel@uu.nl).

Description: We collected 247 sediment samples from aeolian deposits at Lutterzand (former coversand type locality in the Eastern Netherlands) and 250 samples in total from three sites in the aeolian deposits near Leusden (Central Netherlands, western fringe of the Amersfoort glacial basin). Sediment samples of approximately 2 g were pre-treated in ~100 ml demi-water with 5 ml 30% H2O2 to remove organics, 5 ml 10% HCl to remove carbonates and 300 mg Na4P2O7 ˖10H2O to disperse charged particles. The samples were studied for particle size and shape using a Sympatec Qicpic dynamic image analyser. This analyser is set-up using a 2 mm cuvette. To prevent clogging of the cuvette, pre-treated samples are sieved over a 1600 μm mesh, excluding larger grains from the measurement. Grain size-shape distributions were constructed using image analysis on the video data following the methodology in: Van Hateren et al. (2020). The dataset contains conD2d distributions (volumetric convexity-grain size distributions).

Description: This dataset provides geochemistry data for the Holocene sediment sequence retrieved from Lake Uddelermeer (The Netherlands) in 2012. Concentrations of sedimentary pigments, fossil sterols and stanols as well as elemental (C, N) measurements are presented against both depth (cm) and age (cal yr. BP). A total of 92 samples were analysed for C, N and sedimentary pigment content; a subset of 30 samples was analysed for sterol and stanol compounds. The data provides an insight in the natural variability of the lake ecosystem and has been used to identify the anthropogenic drivers of the change to the turbid conditions that currently characterize this lake. Cores were retrieved from the centre of the lake using a 3-m long handheld piston corer deployed from a floating coring platform during field work in April and May 2012. Samples were obtained from splits of the core and processed in the laboratory of the University of Amsterdam (the Netherlands) using standard protocols, including the use of high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) to determine sedimentary pigment concentrations and full scan as well as selective ion monitoring (SIM) gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC–MS) analysis to determine sterol and stanol concentrations.
