Description: Sources of geophysical noise (such as wind, sea waves and earthquakes) or of anthropogenic noise impact ground-based gravitational-wave interferometric detectors, causing transient sensitivity worsening and gaps in data taking. During the one year-long third observing run (O3: from April 01, 2019 to March 27, 2020), the Virgo Collaboration collected a statistically significant dataset, used in this article to study the response of the detector to a variety of environmental conditions. We correlated environmental parameters to global detector performance, such as observation range, duty cycle and control losses. Where possible, we identified weaknesses in the detector that will be used to elaborate strategies in order to improve Virgo robustness against external disturbances for the next data taking period, O4, currently planned to start at the end of 2022. The lessons learned could also provide useful insights for the design of the next generation of ground-based interferometers.

Notes: Abstract Theoretical expressions for the probability of survival of an irradiated cell have been obtained in a simple form. An attempt has been made to calculate the probability that a cell will remain in normal condition or in damaged state at a given instant of time. The important assumption which makes this possible is that once the cell is repaired it will behave like a normal cell for further irradiation.

Notes: Abstract The effect of temperature and strain-rate on the yield and flow stress of zirconium, containing oxygen in the range of 0.09 to about 2.5 at. % has been examined at temperatures between 77 and 700° K. The above measurements were coupled with strain rate change tests and stress-relaxation experiments, so that all the deformation parameters associated with thermal activation could be evaluated. The results of these measurements showed that the thermal component of flow stress increases with increasing oxygen content of the alloy. Two stages of activation were found to occur for all these alloys. The first stage was associated with the unpinning of dislocation loops from impurity pinning points. At higher temperatures, because of the unpinning of many impurity pinning points, a second stage of activation associated with a different mechanism was found to occur. The variation of certain parameters associated with this stage of deformation strongly suggests the Peierls-Nabarro force as the controlling criterion.

Notes: Abstract Polymerised trioxane crystals, irradiated at liquid nitrogen temperature show a single thermoluminescence peak on warming. Corresponding trioxane monomer crystals show a thermoluminescence spectrum of five peaks, and a series of sharp spikes at irregular intervals. On warming an unirradiated crystal, a two-peak spectrum plus spikes is obtained. The spikes are associated with strong electrical discharges and tentatively ascribed to dislocation of crystals under thermal stress.

Description: Remote sensing soil moisture products provide an opportunity to improve the forecasting skill of hydrological models since obtaining accurate streamflow data is challenging, especially in ungauged catchments. Soil moisture data can provide additional information about the state of the land surface and can be used to improve the representation of the hydrological processes in the model. However, it is also worth noting that using soil moisture data for model calibration can be more challenging than streamflow data alone, as the soil moisture measurements may be more uncertain or subject to errors. Hence, in this study, ASCAT-derived soil moisture product along with streamflow data is used to calibrate a distributed hydrological model, the Variable Infiltration Capacity (VIC) model, over the Godavari River basin of India. The calibration scheme, based on combining the performance scores of streamflow and soil moisture predictions, was compared with streamflow-only calibration at multiple outlets. Although the joint-calibration scheme reduced the model efficiency for streamflow prediction during the calibration period, it produced better streamflow predictions for the validation period and at gauging sites that were not used for streamflow-only calibration. The improved performance during the validation period and at uncalibrated gauging sites suggests that the use of soil moisture data can still be beneficial in improving the overall accuracy of the model.
