Description: Laser ablation-inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry and electron-probe microanalysis were used to investigate the trace-element contents of sphalerite, chalcopyrite and pyrite from the Plaka Pb–Zn–Ag deposit. Using petrographic observations, the analytical results could be linked to the temporal evolution of the Plaka ore-forming system. Sphalerite chemistry reliably records the temperature and fS2 evolution of the system, with estimated formation temperatures reproducing the microthermometric results from previous fluid-inclusion studies. Chalcopyrite chemistry also shows systematic variations over time, particularly for Cd, Co, Ge, In, Sn and Zn concentrations. Measurable pyrite was only found in association with early high-temperature mineralisation, and no clear trends could therefore be identified. We note, however, that As and Se contents in pyrite are consistent with formation temperatures estimated from co-existing sphalerite. Statistical analysis of the sphalerite data allowed us to identify the dominant geological controls on its trace-element content. The three investigated factors temperature, fS2, and sample location account for 〉 80% of the observed variance in Mn, Fe, Co, Ga, Ge, In, Sb and Hg concentrations, and 〉 60% of the observed variance in Cd and Sn concentrations. Only for Cu and Ag concentrations is the explained variance 〈 50%. A similarly detailed analysis was not possible for chalcopyrite and pyrite. Nevertheless, comparison of the results for all three investigated minerals indicates that there are some systematic variations across the deposit which may be explained by local differences in fluid composition.

Description: The Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE) missions rely on inter-satellite interferometry to measure changes in the Earth’s local gravity over months and years. These measurements provide a critical tool for understanding large scale mass transport, particularly movement of water and ice. The next generation of GRACE-like missions are expected to rely on laser interferometry as the primary science measurement, requiring a new technique to provide long term frequency stability. We have previously demonstrated a simple phase modulation scheme that is able to measure changes in laser frequency over long timescales using measurements of the optical cavity’s free spectral range. The proposed technique uses hardware that is predominantly already baselined on the mission, requiring minimal changes to existing flight qualified hardware. The technique has demonstrated performance exceeding the expected mission requirements [1], as well as compatibility with existing flight hardware. We have also calibrated the technique to absolute frequency by comparing with an atomic reference and have validated an approach for on-ground calibration to allow the absolute frequency to be determined in orbit [2]. Description: For over ten years, Race and Ethnicity in Latin America has been an essential text for students studying the region. This second edition adds new material and brings the analysis up to date. Race and ethnic identities are increasingly salient in Latin America. Peter Wade examines changing perspectives on Black and Indian populations in the region, tracing similarities and differences in the way these peoples have been seen by academics and national elites. Race and ethnicity as analytical concepts are re-examined in order to assess their usefulness. This book should be the first port of call for anthropologists and sociologists studying identity in Latin America.

Description: What can the United States learn from other militaries about how better to prepare for full-spectrum operations and deployments? The authors examine the militaries of China, France, the UK, India, and Israel to (1) identify different approaches to readiness, adaptability, and operational issues and (2) assess the ways in which units are trained both for specific and general deployments and for train, advise, and assist missions.

Description: This book closely analyses the rise and fall of Louis XIV's marine insurance institutions in Paris, which were central to the French monarchy's efforts to stimulate commerce, colonial enterprise and economic growth. These institutions were the projects of two leading ministers, Jean-Baptiste Colbert and his son, the Marquis de Seignelay. While both men recognised that marine insurance was crucial for protecting commercial investment in French maritime endeavours, Colbert looked to private enterprise to lure capital away from passive investments in state debt towards the marine insurance industry. Seignelay, by contrast, leveraged the tools of privilege on which the French economy was built by creating the first chartered company in the history of marine insurance. In exploring the global insurance portfolios of the men and women who joined these institutions - and the conflicts that arose when maritime incidents came into dispute - the book identifies the absolute monarchy itself as the source of the institutions' struggles. While the markets of Amsterdam and London thrived in the long run, Parisian insurers were made to bear the burden of maritime and colonial losses during Louis XIV's costly wars to make up for the state's inadequate protection of French shipping, the French Atlantic empire and the Parisian market. This encapsulates, the book argues, the overarching system of risk management that lay at the heart of absolutism itself. Description: This chapter presents Plantwise as an innovative process for pest management in small holder crop production systems. The tools and applications developed under Plantwise constitute innovations that have potential to contribute to broad aspects of pest management. They can be easily repurposed to address specific needs and adapted to fit various country contexts and agricultural production practices.
