Abstract Candida parapsilosis grows oxidatively under aerobic conditions and fermentatively in micro-aerobic (0.2 μM oxygen) continuous culture. The amount of unsaturated fatty acids and sterol in cells and mitochondria, and the aerobic cytochromes are decreased in micro-aerobic cultures. In aerobic cells mitochondrial protein synthesis accounts for the formation of more than one-third of the proteins of the organelles; in micro-aerobic cultures, this declines to 5%. At the same time, minor but significant differences in the nature of the protein products formed by the mitochondrial system are evident in micro-aerobic and aerobic cells.
