Description: Study of the climate in the Mediterranean basin during different historical periods has taken on a particular importance, particularly regarding its role (together with other factors) in the evolution of human settlement patterns. Although the Roman age is traditionally considered a period with a favourable climate, recent studies have revealed considerable complexity in terms of regional climate variations. In this paper, we compare the hydrological change from speleothem proxy records with flood reconstructions from archaeological sites for Northern Tuscany (central Italy). We identify a period of oscillating climatic conditions culminating in a multidecadal dry event during the 1st century BC, followed by a century of increased precipitation at the beginning of the Roman Empire and subsequently a return to drier conditions in the 2nd century AD. The period of rainfall increase documented by the speleothems agrees with both the archaeological flood record as well as historical flood data available for the Tiber River, ca. 300 km to the south. These data also suggest a return to wetter conditions following the 3nd and 4rd centuries AD.

Notes: This note comments on the doubtful application of an economic concept of personal income to the non-personal business enterprise situation. This paper presents a series of models which we believe properly reflect the relevant relationships in the lease or buy evaluation. The models present the proper cash flow variables for such an analysis and they present the impact on asset net present value of cost of capital and market risk assessment. Finally, the models reflect the simultaneous effect on asset and financial structure of the acceptance of a particular investment opportunity.

Notes: : Up to date there are still not many instances that can be found on the practice of a totally closed system of water supply, treatment, and reuse. In the United States, this is partly because the Public Health Service has discouraged such a practice. However, are there sound scientific reasons to support such a decision or is it purely a matter of psychological reason? Are the treatment technologies available today able to achieve the integrated closed system at a reasonable cost, yet without risking the public health? Are there some extra precautions that must be taken in practicing the direct reuse for the drinking purpose? These questions are discussed in this article. Current available technologies for advanced waste treatment are briefly reviewed and the treated effluent qualities obtained by the authors and others are used as a focal point of discussion on the feasibility of practicing the closed system. For this purpose, the treated effluent qualities are compared to the “Ranges of Promulgated Standards for Raw Water Sources of Domestic Water Supply” which have been used by the Public Health Service and several state regulatory agencies.

Notes: Wild plaice and flounders with lymphocystis were sampled and their lesion distribution noted. Regression of the lymphocystis cells was seen by histology and a host response including macrophages and immune cells occurred. Antibodies were detectable by a double diffusion precipitin test. The epidemiology is discussed with reference to these findings and to the life histories of the two species.

Notes: The purpose of this article is to illustrate the impact of the simultaneous investment-financing decisions required by a small growth company when accepting relatively large investment projects. By such illustration, the capital budgeting rationale for using “rules of thumb” will be clarified, and correspondingly, the implicit assumptions for approximating a company's “cost of capital” will be exposed. To provide quantitative estimates of the various impacts of different capital budgeting strategies, a relatively simple simulation model was constructed. Once the implicit assumptions are exposed, the importance of a strategy combining the rules of thumb and cost of capital criteria is evident. It is believed that this combined strategy provides a practical bridge between the “art” and science of finance.

Notes: The experimental evaporation of brine in shallow vessels shows that layered halite can form by the overgrowth of crystals in mats that have foundered from their initial position of growth at the brine-air interface; by the upward and lateral growth of crystals that have nucleated on the floor; and by the overgrowth on detrital halite. Each of these processes, and its resultant crystal fabric, is described in relation to the environmental factors which influence it.The fabrics of primary halite crystals in layered halite-rock and associated deposits from the Lower Keuper Saliferous Beds of the Cheshire Basin are described and compared with those of the experimentally produced halite. Some of the ancient halite-rock may be matched with floor-nucleated crystals, and some with detrital halite; none can be shown to have grown from foundered mats. The halite-rock is regarded as having formed in shallow brine bodies, perhaps only a few centimetres deep, but of unknown extent, whilst the presence of planar solution or deflation surfaces at the top of the layered units, and disruptions in bedding similar to buckled salt-crust structures, point to periodic and perhaps prolonged emergence.

Notes: .This work evaluates the economic losses due to diversion from the Snake River during the relatively low-flow year May 1928-April 1929. The results determine the losses due to pollution abatement and power generation for several different patterns and volumes of diversion, and the tool of analysis is dynamic programming.
