Notes: Abstract The patterns of flight activity of adult Distantiella theobroma were recorded in an actograph placed in the field. Flight activity of virgin females showed a non-linear increase with age, was highest around mid-day and related to sex attraction behaviour. Mated females and males both showed sharp peaks of activity in the late afternoons. Male flight was depressed by low light intensities and all activity declined with falling light intensity in the evenings and ceased entirely during the hours of darkness.

Notes: Abstract This review attempts to place stellar dynamics in relation to other dynamical fields and to describe some of its important techniques and present-day problems. Stellar dynamics has some parallels, in increasing order of closeness, with celestial mechanics, statistical mechanics, kinetic theory, and plasma theory; but even in the last case the parallels are not very close. Stellar dynamics describes, usually through distribution functions, the motions of a large number of bodies as they all act on each other gravitationally. To a good approximation each star can be considered to move in the smoothed-out field of all the others, with random encounters between pairs of stars adding a slow statistical change to these smooth motions. Smooth-field dynamics has a well-developed theory, and the state of smooth stellar systems can be described in some detail. The ‘third integral’ presents an outstanding problem, however. Stellar encounters also have a well-developed theory, but close encounters and encounters of a single star with a binary pose serious problems for the statistical treatment. Star-cluster dynamics can be approached through a theory of smooth-field dynamics plus changes due to encounters, or alternatively through numerical simulations. The relation between the two methods is not yet close enough. The dynamical evolution of star clusters is still not fully understood.

Notes: Abstract The simple optical cell described is useful for providing supplementary information on the evolution of gases during the electrolysis of fused salts or other electrolytes. Its use with PbS-PbCl2 and PbS-PbCl2-NaCl melts demonstrated that, for anodic sulphur gas production, residual gas evolution occurs, indicating the formation of a chemisorbed species as a reaction intermediate. Dissolution of the sulphur in the melt also takes place; its rate increases with increase in temperature and sulphide concentration.

Notes: Abstract Addition of a correction term every other Newton iteration provides a fifth-order method for finding simple zeros of nonlinear functions. A two-parameter family of such methods is developed. Each family member requires the given function and its derivative to be evaluated at two points per step.

Notes: Abstract A method of Regula Falsi type for finding a simple root of a non-linear equation is presented. It is similar to the Pegasus procedure, but exhibits a higher asymptotic convergence efficiency. This is accomplished by eliminating one or two of the slower Pegasus substeps.

Notes: Abstract The theory specifying the change Δi in a satellite's orbital inclination due to atmospheric rotation, in terms of the decrease in orbital period ΔT, has been extended to an atmosphere with sinusoidal variation of density between day and night. It is found that with certain special sets of values for the orbital parameters, the day-to-night variation in the Earth's atmosphere can alter the equation for Δi/ΔT by as much as 25% though only for a few days. Appreciable changes in Δi/ΔT persisting for several months can only occur for certain resonant orbits: the maximum change is then about 8%. Near-resonance is very unlikely, but the resonance conditions are derived so that orbits can be recognised and avoided.

Notes: Abstract Isotope shifts have been measured in Nd II from which the shifts between pure configurations 4f 4 6s and 4f 4 5d can be determined. The specific mass shift for such a “transition” was estimated to be + 3 mK for a change of two neutrons. By comparison with electronic X-ray isotope shifts the following values were obtained for the change in the nuclear charge distributionδ〈r 2〉 [fm2]: (142, 144) 0.277; (144, 146) 0.257; (146, 148) 0.286; (148, 150) 0.381; (142, 143) 0.130; (144, 145) 0.111. Field shifts in several optical transitions have been compared with values of ¦ψ(0)¦2 obtained from Hartree-Fock wave functions; agreement is good. Other specific mass shifts have been estimated 4f 4 6s− 4f 4 6p, −1 mK; 4f 4 6s− 4f 3 5d 2, −30 mK. These values are in good agreement with calculated values of −1.1 and −30.6 mK.

Notes: Abstract The iron-implantation-perturbed-angular-correlation technique (IMPACT) has been used to measure the Larmor precessions of the 328, 240, and 356 keV states of194Pt,195Pt, and196Pt nuclei, respectively, in ferromagnetic iron and cobalt hosts. The observed angular precessions in iron, corrected for the transient field effect, wereω τ 194(328)=0.103±0.006 rad,ω τ 195 (240)=0.142±0.012, andω τ 196(356)=0.084±0.010. For cobalt hosts, the observed Larmor precessions were ω τ194(328)=0.068±0.006, ω τ195(240)=0.096±0.012, andω τ 196(356)=0.057±0.013. Agreement between theg-factors obtained from the measurements in iron hosts and the measurements in cobalt hosts is very good, and a weighted average of the two measurements givesg 194(328)=0.349±0.031,g 195 (240)=0.136±0.013, andg 196(356)=0.329±0.039.
