Notizen: This paper is concerned with the development of a computational algorithm for the solution of the uncoupled, quasi-static boundary value problem for a linear viscoelastic solid undergoing thermal and mechanical deformation. The method evolves from a finite element discretization of a stationary value problem, leading to the solution of a system of linear integral equations determining the motion of the solid. An illustrative example is included.

Notizen: A limitation of most plate and shell discrete elements now in use is the shape of their undeformed geometry. Typically, the plan form of these elements is a straight-sided triangle or quadrilateral that linearly approximates the undeformed geometry while often using higher-order polynomials to approximate the deformed geometry. This modelling difference leads to inefficiencies that can be eliminated, as demonstrated by a new parametric discrete element based entirely on bicubic Hermite polynomials. This representation of element geometry corresponds to the bicubic Coon's surface patch widely used in design, which allows a common mathematical model for design and analysis. Consideration is given to automating the generation of these patches. Solutions are presented for several plate bending and plate stretching problems. The solutions are in good agreement with closed-form solutions and photoelastic results in the case of a stress-concentration problem. These data demonstrate that the new parametric discrete element maintains solution accuracy for plates with curved boundaries.

Notizen: The criteria for stability of the explicit finite difference solution of the one-dimensional, transient, conduction heat transfer problem with both radiant and convection heat transfer at the boundaries are considered in this paper. These criteria are governed by an inequality set from a functional relationship between the newly calculated and the old temperature at each node. From the node with the most stringent criteria, it is shown that setting the coefficient of the old temperature equal to zero in the governing difference equation is not sufficient for a general criterion. On the other hand, setting the derivative of the new temperature with respect to the old temperature equal to zero in the governing difference equation presents a simple, straightforward technique for obtaining a sufficient condition for a stable system. It is further shown that the second law of thermodynamics, written in explicit finite difference form, does present a necessary criterion for stability. However, the second law, because it is in the form of an inequality, does not present as simple a criterion as the derivative method does. The specific problem studied is a finite thickness slab, initially at a uniform temperature, but instantaneously subjected to both radiation and convection on its two surfaces. Temperature profiles were calculated on a digital computer and are presented in dimensionless graphical form over a range of five dimensionless parameters. A plot that relates stability to the maximum time-step size for the entire range of practical conditions of radiation numbers is also presented.

Notizen: The solution of plate and shell problems by an independent specification of slopes and middle surface displacements is attractive due to its simplicity and ability of reproducing shear deformation. Unfortunately elements of this type are much too stiff when thickness is reduced. In an earlier paper a derivation of such an element was presented1 which proved very successful in ‘thick’ situations. Here a very simple extension is made which allows the element to be economically used in all situations. The improved flexibility is achieved simply by reducing the order of numerical integration applied to certain terms without sacrificing convergence properties. The process is of very wide applicability in improvement of element properties.

Notizen: Two methods for the numerical evaluation of orthogonal damping matrices are developed. The first relates the modal damping ratios to the coefficients of the Caughey series. The second is a direct approach which expresses the damping matrix as a sum of a series of matrices each of which produces damping in a particular mode. It is found that the direct approach is more convenient to apply and is less numerically sensitive than the series approach.

Notizen: It is shown that isoparametric finite elements with derivative degrees of freedom of second order or higher in the local curvilinear space demand an excessive number of degrees of freedom in the global space. To illustrate this limitation as it pertains to the continued development of higher order elements, discussion is centered around the general hexahedron element.

Notizen: Considerable attention has been devoted in the literature on numerical methods towards securing energy convergence of solutions for, say, linearly elastic plate bending problems. Although energy convergence is necessary it by no means follows that the derived bending moments and shearing forces converge uniformly at a given point and it is this kind of feature which the engineer is really seeking. This question is examined in the context of a problem which is of particular interest to the civil engineering field and concerns the bending of a square plate under uniformly distributed load; the plate has simply supported edges and contains a central square hole with free edges. The solution to this multiply connected and mixed boundary value problem is obtained through a recently developed modification to the Rayleigh-Ritz method which has very general application and renders the solution mathematically valid up to the internal corner points where the bending moments are singular. Use is made of triangular equilibrium finite elements in conjunction with continuous eigenfunctions. Although it is already known that the order (i.e. the eigenvalue) of the singularity at the internal corners is available by inspection, it is an interesting feature of the present solution that a good approximation to the amplitude is also obtained by an inspection of the finite element results.

Notizen: A newly developed numerical Laplace transform inversion technique is described. A derivation of the method, termed the ‘multidata method’, is presented along with a description of a similar collocation method. Similarities and differences between the two numerical methods are described and discussed. Results of parameter studies of both methods are presented which demonstrate the sensitivity to error displayed by the collocation method and the magnitude of the improvement in accuracy obtainable with the multidata method as compared with the collocation method, especially when errors exist in the function to be inverted.
