Notes: The template directed synthesis of poly[d(A-T)] from the nucleoside triphosphates in the presence of DNA polymerase I is carried out continuously in a stirred flow reactor for the first time. The initial objective is to test the kinetic stability of the established steady states at various flow rates. Graphical analysis predicts instable steady states for certain high flow rates. As a consequence of instabilities multiple steady states and steady-state hysteresis may occur. Steady-state hysteresis has now been found experimentally. For a different enzyme fraction of low exonuclease activity we found the steady-state absorbance at 260 nm to be almost invariant with flow rate at high enzyme concentrations even if the flow rate was increased by a large factor. We call this phenomenon kinetic buffering. Relaxation of a large flow perturbation approaches the steady state in a sigmoidal fashion. Concentration oscillations at 260 nm occurred in one experiment using an enzyme fraction of low exonuclease activity after perturbing the steady state by monomer (dATP). Advantages of the stirred flow reactor method over serial transfer are discussed.

Notes: From the values of relaxation times T2 determined on a pulse spectrometer, and from the shape of bands in high resolution (HR-) and broad line (BL-) NMR spectra, two types of protons, different in mobility, were found to exist in the associated stereocomplex of isotactic (it-) and syndiotactic (st-) poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA). From the analysis of NMR spectra, measured at magic angle rotation (MAR-NMR), the mobility of the ester groups in the stereocomplex is shown to be greatly hindered. Temperature changes of HR-NMR spectra of mixed solutions of it- and st-PMMA in benzene indicate that the associated segments of the stereocomplex can be characterized as junctions of a network of nonassociated sequences.

Description / Table of Contents: The apparent kinetic parameters of the thermal and the thermal and thermooxidative degradation of poly(ethylene terephthalate) for non-isothermal conditions were evaluated. The dependence of these parameters on the heating rate, the mean molecular weight, and the degree of conversion was also established. It is shown that the degradation in nitrogen probably occurs by a short chain mechanism, while the degradation in air is more complex. In the latter case, the exothermic character of the DTA-curves suggests that the chain degradation reaction is overlapped by oxidation processes.

Notes: IR spectra of hexagonal poly(oxymethylene) samples prepared by various polymerization procedures have been studied. The samples were further modified by pressure and by milling in liquid nitrogen. It was found that the considerable differences observed in IR spectra in the range 900-1250 cm-1 are caused by irregularities of the G conformation of the polymer chain. The regularity of the G conformational structure increases by pressing and milling.

Notes: A procedure for the determination of the contents and the thermal stability of associated structures in solutions of polymers is described, making use of the anomalous values and changes of integrated band intensities in high-resolution 1H-NMR spectra. In this way, associated structures in solutions of isotactic and syndiotactic poly(methyl methacrylate), (PMMA), were detected and characterized. The associated structures in solutions of isotactic PMMA are much more stable than the aggregates in solutions of the syndiotactic PMMA. Two types of aggregates differring in stability were also observed in solutions of atactic poly(vinyl chloride).

Description / Table of Contents: During the study of the thermogravimetric behaviour of linear polymers under anisothermic conditions in air, we found that it is not possible to make accurate statements about the thermal degradation only by a simple comparison of the TG and DTG curves from dynamic thermogravimetry. But an attempt to estimate the kinetics of these curves, particularly by consideration of the influences of the degree of conversion and of the heating rate evidenced remarkable differences. Accordingly, anionic poly(methyl methacrylate) degradates under the applid conditions by a chain mechanism, while anionic polystyrene shows two parallel reactions. The degradation of linear polyethylene seems to be so complicated, that it is not possible to give any more detailed informations.

Notes: Temperature changes of infrared spectra of poly(oxymethylene) samples in the hexagonal crystalline form were measured; in the nascent state, these samples contained either long (type A) or short (type B) sequences of monomeric units in the G conformation. It was found that up to the temperature of “solid crystal-plastic crystal” transition, the original structure of both types remains essentially unchanged. Only in the melt the original structure is completely destroyed. The composition of the melt is the same for both cases.

Notes: The transverse NMR relaxation times of hydrogen nuclei of water absorbed in white spruce sapwood [Picea glauca (Meunch) Voss] were measured for moisture contents in the range from 5 to 176%. The spin echo amplitudes resulting from the Carr-Purcell sequence decay nonexponentially suggesting the possibility of at least two different relaxation times for water in wood. A simplified structural model of the wood-water mixture is used to estimate the rates of chemical exchange at room temperature of hydrogen nuclei between various sites in the system. The high-resolution NMR line shape is discussed briefly in terms of this proposed model.
