Notes: The operation of a twin screw extruder processing a powder or granular solid is reviewed. The operating variables of screw speed and barrel temperature profile interact with a number of design parameters -  screw design, die geometry, feed zone geometry and with the material properties, in determining machine performance. The factors that determine output and pressure development are specified in a sequence of block diagrams. The dynamic response of an operating machine to disturbances in the steady state conditions is explained in the light of the established relationships and interpreted in conventional control theory terms. Attention is drawn to the importance of mixing in the chambers formed by the screw channels and of the residence time distribution in determining the quality of the final product.

Notes: Equations were developed for evaluating the laminar flow behavior of high-solids suspensions from the physical properties of the liquid and solid components. A technique was developed for calculating suspension flow rates as a function of pressure drop. The technique is applicable to the design of pipe lines. Flow measurements were made in pipe-line viscometers of a unique design that minimized entrance and exit effects. Experimental flow data were obtained for suspensions consisting of nickel, alumina, copper, or glass solids in sodium, xylene, or glycerine vehicles with solids concentrations of 28 to 55 vol. %. The basis for the correlation of the data was an analytical investigation of the flow behavior that considered the particle-particle interaction that takes place in a settled suspension. The correlation equations fit all systems investigated. They take into account the effects of liquid viscosity, liquid and solid densities, particle size, size distribution, particle surface area, volume fraction of solids in the suspension, and volume fraction of solids at maximum settled conditions.

Notes: A mathematical model of dynamic distillation was verified experimentally for transients resulting from a sequence of upsets in operating conditions, that is, for upsets occurring in the unsteady state before the effects of previous upsets died out.The equations for feed-forward control of the top product composition by reflux ratio control action were derived and a computer program was written in FORTRAN for solution on a digital computer. This control model was employed in the feed-forward control of an experimental distillation column when subjected to an upset in feed composition.Experimental data were obtained from a twelve-plate, 10-in. diameter distillation column with a methanol-tertiary butyl alcohol system. The numerical technique employed is a completely general divided difference method which can be utilized in the solution of any system of first-order differential equations.

Notes: Calculations concerning the production of heavy water by the hydrogen sulfide dual-temperature exchange process require precise data on the physical properties of dry hydrogen sulfide and hydrogen sulfide-water mixtures for temperatures between 25 and 170°C., and for pressures between 200 and 340 lb./sq.in.abs. However, data on enthalpy of hydrogen sulfide-water mixtures were not found in the literature, and data published on hydrogen sulfide-water compositions at equilibrium were given at such large intervals of temperature and pressure that they could not be interpolated accurately enough by ordinary means. 1Specific volume and enthalpy of dry, superheated hydrogen sulfide vapor,2Composition of hydrogen sulfide-water vapor and liquid in equilibrium,3Enthalpy of hydrogen sulfide vapor saturated with water vapor,4Enthalpy of water liquid saturated with hydrogen sulfide vapor,5Deuterium distribution constants for vapor-liquid equilibrium.A study was undertaken to express the properties, listed below, with equations suitable for solution on a digital computer and useful in mathematical models of the process.New correlating constants were derived where needed. The equations and typical results are presented in this paper.

Notes: The presence of internal circulation in forming liquid drops has a significant effect on mass transfer rates. For the systems studied, no circulation was observed below a Reynolds number of 9.7. For Reynolds numbers between 9.7 and 34.4, transition from zero circulation to complete circulation during the entire drop formation period occurred. In studies on the rate of mass transfer from fixed volume drops with forced internal circulation, increases in mass transfer rates were found at Reynolds numbers which corresponded to those observed for the development of internal circulation patterns within the drop.
