Notizen: Advantages of a hollow-fiber hemodialyzer have been well described. The goal of this program was to provide a working model of a noncellulosic hollow fiber artificial kidney with nonthrombogenic blood-contacting surfaces, low blood-priming volume and low pressure drop, a satisfactory rate of urea transport, and high rate of ultrafiltration of water. Also, the reliability and utility of these devices was to be demonstrated through clinical evaluation.

Notizen: A numerical model is proposed to simulate the space-time behaviour of a low-density plasma in a linear multipole. Semi-discrete Galerkin techniques are used in conjunction with triangular finite elements. For both space and time discretizations, special techniques are developed to numerically separate the effect of rapid diffusion along the field lines from the slow perpendicular diffusion. Numerical results are exhibited to show how these techniques succeed in eliminating the problems caused by the strong anisotropy of the diffusion coefficient in the strongly curved and very inhomogeneous multipole configuration.

Notizen: Several types of smoothing technique are considered which generate continuous approximation (i.e. nodal values) for vorticity and pressure from finite element solutions of the Navier-Stokes equations using quadrilateral elements. The simpler schemes are based on combinations of linear extrapolation and/or averaging algorithms which convert elementwise. Gauss point values to nodal point values. More complicated schemes, based on a global smoothing technique which employ the mass matrix (consistent or lumped), are also presented. An initial assessment of the accuracy of the several schemes is obtained by comparing the approximate vorticities with an analytical function. Next, qualitative vorticity comparisons are made from numerical solutions of the steady-state driven cavity problem. Finally, applications of smoothing techniques to discontinuous pressure fields are demonstrated.

Notizen: This paper is concerned with the development of a computational algorithm for the solution of the uncoupled, quasi-static boundary value problem for a linear viscoelastic solid undergoing thermal and mechanical deformation. The method evolves from a finite element discretization of a stationary value problem, leading to the solution of a system of linear integral equations determining the motion of the solid. An illustrative example is included.

Notizen: A limitation of most plate and shell discrete elements now in use is the shape of their undeformed geometry. Typically, the plan form of these elements is a straight-sided triangle or quadrilateral that linearly approximates the undeformed geometry while often using higher-order polynomials to approximate the deformed geometry. This modelling difference leads to inefficiencies that can be eliminated, as demonstrated by a new parametric discrete element based entirely on bicubic Hermite polynomials. This representation of element geometry corresponds to the bicubic Coon's surface patch widely used in design, which allows a common mathematical model for design and analysis. Consideration is given to automating the generation of these patches. Solutions are presented for several plate bending and plate stretching problems. The solutions are in good agreement with closed-form solutions and photoelastic results in the case of a stress-concentration problem. These data demonstrate that the new parametric discrete element maintains solution accuracy for plates with curved boundaries.

Notizen: A new approach to modelling solids that are anisotropic and heterogeneous is presented with applications to structures of composite material. A parametric cubic modelling system is presented for lines, surfaces, volumes, and physical data that uses construction-in-context to generate numerical data. This system automates the construction of discrete element models and can reduce input data requirements by more than an order of magnitude. A tricubic isoparametric discrete element is presented that does not require displacement derivatives to define connectivity. This element is capable of exact displacement and strain continuity over a surface while permitting strain discontinuities at heterogeneous material interfaces. The shape of an element can be any hexahedron, pentahedron, or tetrahedron and the material properties are allowed to vary over the volume. Evaluation of modelling error with respect to closed-form solutions for curved geometries indicate a single element can model up to 90-degree segments with stresses accurate to 1 per cent. Applications of the system to composite structures are presented for interlaminar edge effects and attachment stresses in a sandwich panel.

Notizen: A minimum-time, thermal-to-thermal sailplane trajectory optimization problem is formulated as a non-linear optimal control problem. Numerical solutions are obtained using a gradiaent projection algorithm which incorporates conjugate directions of search. Further insight into the nature of the solutions and the computational process is ontained through an analysis of the linearized sailplane dynamics and the necessary conditions for optimality. Numerical results are presented for two sailplane types and various values of thermal strength and distance between thermals. An additional problem is formulated and solved for the case of bounded control rate.

Notizen: Porcelain inlays coupled by a silane treatment to composite resins which were used as cementing media and in turn retained by an undercut were evaluated as to their marginal integrity and retention against conventionally restored teeth. These included restorations in teeth with undercuts of resins, composites, and porcelain inlays cemented with zinc oxyphosphate cements. The evaluations were determined by isotope penetration during thermal cycling (180 cycles from 12 to 50°C), scanning electron microscopy of sectioned restorations, and mechanical pull tests. The results showed improved retentive qualities and markedly improved resistance to marginal penetration. Improved adaptation of the composite to the tooth surface was produced by the mechanical action of seating the porcelain inlay.

Notizen: A series of nonporous glasses and glass materials designed with controlled surface ion activities to allow chemical bonding to bone are described. Surface reactivities of these materials in vitro are correlated with biological activities in vivo and in tissue culture. Direct chemical bonding of the materials to bone is demonstrated. The mechanism for development of this bond is through the production of an amorphous ion surface gel on the bioglass. This gel induces osteogenesis by a chemotactic response of osteoblasts.
