    Notes: Summary The whitespotted swayer Monochamus scutellatus (Say) (Coleoptera: Cerambycidae) breeds in recently killed conifers in northeastern North America, especially white pine Pinus strobus L. We cut down 4 white pines in Pocahontas County, West Virginia, in June 1981, in order to study the behavior of sawyers attracted to the trees. Far greater numbers of both male and female sawyers were attracted to the largest of the trees cut. At all trees, females preferred the parts of the tree of greater circumference. These preferences may be related to greater larval survival in large-circumference regions. Male and female numbers at breeding site peaked at about 1200–1500 h EST; at this time, males generally outnumbered females by about 2:1. We placed males in 3 size classes: L (〉2.0 cm), M (≦2.0 cm, ≧1.8 cm), and S (〈1.8 cm). At the largest of our 4 trees, L males disproportionately frequented the portion of the trunk preferred by females. L males were far more successful than M and S males in mating and in agonistic encounters with other males. L males were thus apparently able to exclude smaller males from the preferred region to some extent.

    Description: This open access book makes quantum computing more accessible than ever before. A fast-growing field at the intersection of physics and computer science, quantum computing promises to have revolutionary capabilities far surpassing “classical” computation. Getting a grip on the science behind the hype can be tough: at its heart lies quantum mechanics, whose enigmatic concepts can be imposing for the novice. This classroom-tested textbook uses simple language, minimal math, and plenty of examples to explain the three key principles behind quantum computers: superposition, quantum measurement, and entanglement. It then goes on to explain how this quantum world opens up a whole new paradigm of computing. The book bridges the gap between popular science articles and advanced textbooks by making key ideas accessible with just high school physics as a prerequisite. Each unit is broken down into sections labelled by difficulty level, allowing the course to be tailored to the student’s experience of math and abstract reasoning. Problem sets and simulation-based labs of various levels reinforce the concepts described in the text and give the reader hands-on experience running quantum programs. This book can thus be used at the high school level after the AP or IB exams, in an extracurricular club, or as an independent project resource to give students a taste of what quantum computing is really about.     Notes: Abstract Impedance measurements have been made on Li/SO2(C) cells containing an acetonitrile-based electrolyte in a range of states from newly assembled to completely discharged. The cell behaviour can be explained if it is assumed that the lithium is an irreversible electrode and that the SO2 electrode is reversible.     Notes: Abstract Impedance measurements show that the Li/SOCl2, BrCl cell has, to a first approximation, a relatively simple electrical behaviour. The chemistry of the cell is itself complicated and together with the very low interelectrode separation, this leads to the impedance behaving erratically as charge is withdrawn. It seems to be impossible to identify a suitable state-of-charge test.

    Notes: Abstract Research carried out at Loughborough during the last five years on the impedance of Leclanché, alkaline Zn-MnO2, alkaline Zn-HgO, Li-CuO, Li-SO2, Li-SOCl2 primary cells is briefly reviewed. The use of alternating current methods for the estimation of the state of charge of the cells is discussed. A search was made for properties of the impedance of each cell system which change in a marked and reliable manner when a prescribed amount of charge is withdrawn from the cell. It is concluded that simple tests based upon an assessment of these properties are adequate for the estimation of the state of charge of some of the systems studied. However, other systems are not so ‘well-behaved’. The impedance of each cell changed significantly during discharge and, although making measurements of these changes would enable the state of charge to be estimated, the test techniques required would not necessarily be simple. Using the results obtained on the impedance of the cells, test sets have been constructed which provide a digital presentation of the open-circuit voltage and the state of charge of Leclanché cells (Ever Ready type SP11), mercury cells (Mallory, type RM502R) and lithium cells (Mallory, type L032S and SAFT, type LC01). The electronic techniques employed in these test sets are described in outline with reference in block-schematic diagrams. A proposal is made for the construction of a general-purpose tester for primary cells which would incorporate microprocessors and provide an indication of state of charge based upon data relating to impedance, temperature and discharge history. The tester might also be made self-calibrating for field use.

    Notes: Abstract The impedances of nominally fully charged and partially discharged Li/SOCl2 cells have been measured in the frequency range 10 kHz-6 mHz. The data have been interpreted using an analogue technique in terms of the most probable cell reactions. The possibilities of state-of-charge tests based on the impedance technique are discussed. The most promising parameter for a residual capacity test in the region 100-90% is the double-layer capacitance.
