    Notes: Abstract Research carried out at Loughborough during the last five years on the impedance of Leclanché, alkaline Zn-MnO2, alkaline Zn-HgO, Li-CuO, Li-SO2, Li-SOCl2 primary cells is briefly reviewed. The use of alternating current methods for the estimation of the state of charge of the cells is discussed. A search was made for properties of the impedance of each cell system which change in a marked and reliable manner when a prescribed amount of charge is withdrawn from the cell. It is concluded that simple tests based upon an assessment of these properties are adequate for the estimation of the state of charge of some of the systems studied. However, other systems are not so ‘well-behaved’. The impedance of each cell changed significantly during discharge and, although making measurements of these changes would enable the state of charge to be estimated, the test techniques required would not necessarily be simple. Using the results obtained on the impedance of the cells, test sets have been constructed which provide a digital presentation of the open-circuit voltage and the state of charge of Leclanché cells (Ever Ready type SP11), mercury cells (Mallory, type RM502R) and lithium cells (Mallory, type L032S and SAFT, type LC01). The electronic techniques employed in these test sets are described in outline with reference in block-schematic diagrams. A proposal is made for the construction of a general-purpose tester for primary cells which would incorporate microprocessors and provide an indication of state of charge based upon data relating to impedance, temperature and discharge history. The tester might also be made self-calibrating for field use.

    Notes: Abstract The impedances of nominally fully charged and partially discharged Li/SOCl2 cells have been measured in the frequency range 10 kHz-6 mHz. The data have been interpreted using an analogue technique in terms of the most probable cell reactions. The possibilities of state-of-charge tests based on the impedance technique are discussed. The most promising parameter for a residual capacity test in the region 100-90% is the double-layer capacitance.

    Notes: Abstract Motion equations for the gravitationally coupled orbit-attitude motion of a spacecraft are presented. The gravitational force and torque are expanded in a Taylor series in the small ratio (spacecraft size/orbital radius). A recursive definition for higher moments of inertia is introduced which permits terms up tofourth order to be retained. The expressions are fully nonlinear in the attitude variables. A quasi-sunpointing (QSP) passive attitude-control mode is used to assess the effects of higher moments of inertia and gravitational coupling. The attitude motion is detectably coupled to the orbital motion. However, the higher moments of inertia influence only the attitude motion.

    Notes: Abstract Computer produced tables of analytical expressions for the Hansen coefficientsX 0 n, ±m (e) andX 0 −(n+1), ±m (e) are obtained when 1≤n≤30 and 0≤m≤n. The most important properties of these coefficients are briefly discussed together with a description of the recursive procedures used to compute them. The computation ofX k n, ±m andX k −(n+1), ±m whenk≠0 is also discussed. Although tables of these coefficients for 1≤n≤30, −n≤m≤n and |m−k|≤12 have been computed they are not presented here due to their inordinate length.

    Notes: Abstract The occurrence and uniqueness of the ‘critical inclination’ in satellite theory is discussed. An infinite set of canonical transformations in Hill variables are shown to exist whereby the first order secular part of the disturbing function can be changed into an alternative form. As a result of such a transformation the ‘critical inclination’ can become (a)any other real or complex inclination or a function independent of the satellite's orbital inclination and (b) a function dependent on the semi-major axis, eccentricity and inclination of the satellite's orbit. It is also shown that all transformations of types (a) and (b) are only valid for short intervals of time of the order of a few satellite revolutions. Furthermore if such transformations are modified so that they become valid for greater intervals of time, then the resulting solutions in all cases containno singular divisor other than the ‘critical inclination’. It is concluded that the singularity at the ‘critical inclination’ is unique and that it represents an actual physical resonance rather than something resulting from the method of solution or the type of variable used in the analysis. This conclusion is supported by numerical evidence which shows that a satellite's perigee height does suffer resonant changes when the orbital inclination is equal to the ‘critical inclination’ of 63.°4.

    Notes: Abstract Closed-form expressions are derived for the density of the atmosphere as a function of altitude and exospheric temperature. The numerical model used as a reference is the Jacchia 1977 Static Density Model. Unlike previous work, the present method of derivation is independent of the particular mathematical form of the reference model. In fact, many intermediate “tuning” parameters provide the flexibility necessary to adjust these solutions optimally to all numerical models of the Jacchia type. Some other improvements to existing analytic Jacchia models are made, namely increased numerical efficiency, smaller deviation from the reference model and continuity of the first derivative at all altitudes. The model can also be expanded for improved accuracy. Numerical results and comparisons with the Jacchia 1977 model are made. Potential numerical difficulties are identified and methods given to remove them.
