    Abstract: Nature-based solutions (NbS) are solutions inspired or supported by nature. They include ecosystem conservation and restoration measures, as well as the creation or enhancement of natural processes in man-made ecosystems, such as cities. Recent interest in NbS has emphasized their importance for urban water management and cities across the world have begun to experiment with them. Experiences from different contexts, however, are not adequately captured and understood. This book aims to address this gap by compiling case studies and reviews that explore NbS for urban water management from different regions and perspectives and highlight emerging challenges and opportunities for harnessing their potential. .

    Description: Extensive research has shown that the early life stages of marine organisms are sensitive to ocean acidification (OA). Less is known, however, on whether larval settlement and metamorphosis may be affected, or by which mechanisms. These are key processes in the life cycle of most marine benthic organisms, since they mark the transition between the free swimming larval stage to the benthic life. We investigated whether OA could affect the larval settlement success of the sea urchin Evechinus chloroticus, a key coastal species with ecological, economic and cultural importance in New Zealand. We performed four settlement experiments to test whether reduced seawater pH (ranging from 8.1 to 7.0, at an interval of ∼0.2 pH units) alters larval settlement and metamorphosis success. Our results show that settlement success was not significantly reduced when the larvae were exposed to a range of reduced seawater pH treatments (8.1–7.0) at time of settlement (direct effects). Similarly, when presented with crustose coralline algae (CCA) pre-conditioned in different seawater pH of either pH 8.1 or 7.7 for 28 days, larval settlement success remained unaltered (indirect effects). We conclude that competent larvae in this species are resilient to OA at time of settlement. Further research on a range of taxa that vary in settlement selectivity and behaviour is needed in order to fully understand the effects of OA on the life cycle of marine invertebrates and the consequences it might have for future coastal marine ecosystems.

    Notes: We have studied the wetting and drying transitions in a solid–fluid interace with truncated Lennard-Jones interactions, for which there have been reported molecular dynamics results by Sikkenk et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 59, 98 (1987)]. We consider in detail the differences resulting from the use of a "real'' solid substrate instead of the "inert wall'' model which has been used in all previous calculations.

    Notes: A theoretical model for the infrared (0–1) band of dilute solutions of diatomic polar molecules in nonpolar rare-gas liquids is presented. The model is based on decomposition of the rotational motion of the diatomic molecule into two limiting cases, according to the Bratos model: quasifree rotation and rotational diffusion. Contribution to the infrared absorption coefficient due to quasifree rotation is analyzed within a non-Markovian formalism using a stochastic directing intermolecular field (DIF) model to describe the diatomic molecule–solvent interaction. The P and R branches appear as a consequence of the quasifree contribution, which is also important in the Q-branch region. The contribution due to rotational diffusion is calculated making use of the Debye model and is mainly significant in the Q-branch region.

    Notes: In paper I (the preceding paper), a spectral theory describing the near infrared fundamental band spectra of diatomic polar molecules impurities in nonpolar solvents has been developed in terms of a reduced set of parameters. In this paper, this spectral theory is applied to HCl in Ar, Kr, and Xe liquid solutions. The parameters obtained by fitting the experimental and calculated profiles are in good agreement with those calculated using several microscopic theories.

    Notes: A very simple model of a classical particle in a heat bath under the influence of external noise is studied. By means of a suitable hypothesis, the heat bath is reduced to an internal colored noise (Ornstein–Uhlenbeck noise). In a second step, an external noise is coupled to the bath.     Notes: The three order-of-magnitude variation in the proton nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) longitudinal relaxation time T1 of water adsorbed on silica surfaces versus that of bulk water makes proton NMR studies of porous materials powerful tools to study the effects of adsorption. Recent theory permits the utilization of this different response to obtain pore space surface-to-volume (S/V) distribution functions by inverting the decay of the z component of magnetization of fully saturated porous rocks; information can likewise be obtained on the fluid distribution at partially saturated conditions. A computer program has been developed to invert the NMR relaxation curves for the S/V distribution function, assuming an isolated pore regime, the ramifications of which are examined. The program has been applied to experimental results from water, porous sandstones, and tight gas sands at various pore fluid saturations and varying electrolyte content. For the fully saturated case, the results show promise in the application of NMR to describing pore space geometries in rock samples with widely varying surface-to-volume ratios. For partially saturated rocks, the results reflect the preferential early draining of the large pores at high water saturations, connectivity percolation phenomena at intermediate saturations, and the dominating role of adsorbed water films at low water saturations. Experiments on rocks saturated with saline solutions disclose the importance of the effects of alteration of the active sites on the rock surfaces as well as the role of electrolytes in modifying the structural properties of bulk solution.
